I just moved from Flamming Clifs to A-10C and am very much still learning. I"ve been going through the training areas but I find that it's going a bit to fast for me to let it sink in. What I'd like to do is actually set up a training mission where I need to start up the jet fly it, practice bombing, come back and land. I looked in the missions but didn't see any training map that could be used. Do I need to create my own mission for it?

Also, are there groups online that help train via the mutliplayer option? I think it would be great to actually have an experienced pilot fly with me to train.

I know about those, I did the first couple last night. But since the narration goes quite quickly, I don't think I learned why I'm flicking the switch for each portion. So I"m trying to see if there is a mission that is not narrated that I could take my time with the check list in the flight manual to get to know the switches and settings a lot better.

I agree the narrative are a great place to start though. I did learn alot of basics from them.

Nothing bundled with the sim, you'll need to make your own.

Regarding the multiplayer option, yes many (most) squads out there provide training to various standards. Check the multiplayer forum for details.

Thanks Dragon...will check them out.

As for the narative missions...I like the concept. But in order to get "flight ready" I need to be able to do it without the narrative. I'd rather not do it when I have a mission to worry about and run it at my own speed.

Sort of like running drills on the ground so when you get up in the air you know what your doing. I find it helps training a lot. I fly a lot of X-plane and find that I spend several hours with each aircraft on the ground learning all their systems and controls so I have a better idea of how they work before I get into the air.

Remember in RL that pilots don't get into an actual aircraft before doing a lot of simulator time. That involves practice start up, emergency skills, and other functions. That's all I'm trying to emulate.

I found the training in A-10C to be one of the best I ever encountered in a flight sim. After doing them I had a really good idea about how to use the aircraft, now with the 51st they train in the finer points of the A-10 but the basically are taught very well by the training missions.

while on the other hand Black Shark's training is pretty much useless for me (sorry Wags)

Flamming Hills was similar as well - training was pretty much a quicktime movie. So it wasn't so hands on. I love the training in A-10C and it's greatly informative. But if you have someone telling you what to do each time, its hard to learn. So I want a scenario where I can sit in the cockpit and start her up on my own and see if it works. The more times I do it, the better I'll get at it.

I agree, the training missions have evolved quite a lot since Burning Beach.

But like Kylania says, creating your own test range is quite easy with the editor.

1. "New mission"

2. keep the sides the way they are

3. put an US A10C next to an airfield (e.g. Batumi)

  • skill: Player
  • loadout: your choice!
  • under waypoints choose takeoff and start from ramp

4. add waypoints for your route

  • last waypoint = land
  • target waypoint's elevation 0 feet AGL for easier target acquisition

5. add targets of choice at target waypoint (e.g. RU 4xT72 + 2xZSU23-4)

6. if you want, you can change the weather and time of the mission

7. done, save, fly, kill!

That should be all, I hope I didn't miss anything.

Good hunting! :gun_sniper:

If you go to the mission menu and read the descriptions of the missions, you'll see that there are a few "training" missions that come already installed. I can't remember the names of all of them but I know there were a couple like "Shooting Gallery" and "Sitting ducks".

You'll start on the ground or in the air with a basic flight plan that'll take you to your target. The ground defenses are non existant or minimal (depending on the mission) so you can get your feet wet without worrying about getting blown out of the air.

I agree with some other upper post. it is really easy to setup a little mission with the editor .

For training, you don't need add a lot of object, and don't even need set waypoint if you don't want. You can start by "non offensive " vehicule, as truck fuel, put them on an airbase.. set your plane close to them ( at a certain range anyway, like that you have the time to prepare yourself.

Then you can start add some tanks, then AAA, and finally SAM ...

- The wiki is too a good place where to find video and pdf tutorial who are extremely well made and extremely usefull. I was open them on a second monitor if needed ... Can be nice to get a reference when you don't remember how to made a thing, or this have not work as you want.

The Instant action is a good way to start too for try some "basic " weapon employement. Target are directly on waypoint, and the first are not offensive. The quick mission generator can be nice, the target are allways close of your base, target are diverse: Hover, Mig, tanks, AAA etc etc..

Perhaps the mission "Shooting Gallery" is what you're looking for. It's listed under the missions tab, the same place you'd find full combat missions. But here, it's basically a target range with JTAC and tanker support. You're free to play and shoot however you want. I think by default you start engines running on the runway, but a quick edit in the mission editor can change that to a ramp start.

I dont think its just me,, I recall posting on this within the last week or so as I may recall,, but I loaded that map a few times,,, tried again tonight,,,, I contacted JTAC and entered in the coordinates "GG327669" in the CDU every time and named it "TGT1" (which nect avail was WP 10), switched to steerpoint, used the UFC steer rocker and cycled to 10/TGT1,,, it always shows its 843M away? Thats a bit far ey?

While it was brought up above,,, I cant figure out where in the mission editor where to change it from a ramp start etc? I clicked on all the buttons I could on the left column,,, just couldnt figure it out?

Thanks

It's one of the waypoint properties. You need to find the player flight and select it by clicking on it, which will give you properties for the flight on the right hand side of the screen. You can tell if it's the player flight because the skill level for the lead aircraft will be set to 'player'. Below the flight's properties you'll find the waypoint information. You can cycle the waypoint back to the first one (if you selected the flight by clicking on some other waypoint, rather than the aircraft's icon).

Once you've got your initial waypoint displaying, you can change its type. For a runway start it'll be listed as "Start from runway", just change it to "Start from ramp" to do a ramp-start. When you change it to "start from ramp" you'll get an additional option to set the parking spot. These are numbered and if you select one, the aircraft's icon will be placed at the position. So you can decide if you want to start on the ramp or in a hangar, and if you want to place yourself close to the active runway or further away.

I created the mission last night. Made about 6 waypoints that go around the area and dropped some enemies along the way. Thanks for the guide...it helped quite a bit!

I have found some tutorials on mission editor that are basic,,,, Im looking to find a tutorial to take that step a tad furthur and implement at least 1 JTAC for which I need more exposure,,,

You need to make an adjustment to your grid setting. If you start on an airfield to the east of the coast your default grid is most likely going to be 38T. If JTAC gives you coordinates in the 37T grid and you don't change your grid setting, you're going to make a waypoint thats hundreds of miles away from your actual target.

I can't give you the most techincal explaination but essentially the UTM system divides the globe up into a grid and unfortunately for us, the region thats modeled is divided between 37T and 38T. There are a bunch of threads on this specific topic, just search around.

The easiest thing to remember is if JTAC gives you coordinates that start with A-G your grid should be 37T. If they're H-Z it should be 38T.

Man! That does simplify it,, I have seen threads on this but I remember at the time, it was way over my head,,, had no idea! I think you have simplified it greatly,, all I have to find now is how and where to make the change,, but Im sure I can find that pretty quick,,, thanks alot for clearing that up,,, I didnt expect to have to change something like that at the start of the mission,, I had no direction to lead me to think that.

I'm glad I could help, I can't take full credit though. I learned all the stuff lurking here on the forums.

I highlighted the button you need to push to change the easting. Make sure you change it before you put in your coordinates though, you'll have to reenter them afterwards otherwise.
