Is it better to go over or under the radar on these ones?

There is no over........there's just under: To be precise, 6 foot under. Report to the quartermaster for measurements and the base lawyer for final signature to wills etc etc prior to engaging.

6 foot under is right, but you don't have to be dead :)

There is no SAM built that can go through earth. So, you *must* use terrain to sneak past an SA-10. If the missile battery is on flat terrain, or ship mounted, then you're buggered. If there are ridges or mountains nearby then the SAM becomes far lethal.

If the SAM has terrain nearby you can use that to hide you. Look for valleys or folds in the ground where you will have some distance AGL but the line of sight from the missile puts you 'below ground'. Eg. if you fly in a valley you can be quite high from the valley floor but well below the ridgeline. Much of Georgia is mountainous so this can be very effective.

For example, in real life there is a SA-10 in Abkhazia (the Russians publically annouced it in 2008, although it had been installed for some time [with questionable international legality]). Just about everywhere in Abkhazia is close to mountains so you can easily sneak past the missile battery provided you are at low (below 2000 feet) altitude. Note I said 'sneak past'. Without anti-radiation missiles it is a much harder task to destroy an SA-10 site (although not impossible in the DCS game where you get to try more than once).

Yeah you definitely can't go over a sa-10 battery unless you happen to be piloting a space shuttle.

Under might work if there is a hill between you and the battery as Moa stated, but otherwise you need someone with HARMs and balls made out of cast iron to help you take it out. Its pretty much one of the nastiest SAM systems in existence.

They're in The Shore, Mission #4. I was trying to go over the SA-8's, still got buggered by the sa-10. Guess I'm just gonna have to hit the deck.

Use terrain masking or the best tactic I have found so far is to Panic then fly directly into the ground. I received no missile threats after following that procedure so it must work. I use that for most missile threats and after playing the sim for so long it is now part of my everyday life. Last week I was asked to go shopping by the wife ...... I looked for some terrain masking and I could only see the open wardrobe door tried to get in there but she had locked on. I then proceeded to drop flares (I call them air biscuits) but to no avail. Last attempt at ejecting failed so I dived onto the floor. It worked, she walked out the house after I feigned death and I re-spawned in the pub. I think it would be good if ED could include a panic button to this sim to make it more realistic and also add the option to flail arms wildly and scream. This I think would look good in F2 view and I would be happy to post tracks of this happening just before either blowing up or hitting the ground. ;)

What's the SA-10 range like? Can you hit them with a maverick at stand off range and quickly dive behind some ground masking?

SA-10 = 25nm

My wife = 20m (or within earshot depending if you are talking about Eastenders or not)

I can't remember how many targets they can track at any one time but if you are MB you could flood them with aircraft ;)

9 targets. And it can put 3 missiles on each of those.

I might setup a quick mission with one of these and see how long I last. Do these things actually run out of missiles in the simulator?

If you are having problems finishing the mission, don't forget to call the SEAD cover. They are available under "F.10 Others" radio menu option.

This is an amazing sim! 'Nuff said!:pilotfly:

Would a SEAD mission even help with an SA-10? I mean, what is the typical range of our anti-radiation missiles? Would you even be able to get one off before you're already tracked and fired on?

Not sure about the real-life procedure, but it does depend a bit on how you do it. SA-10 range depends a lot on your altitudes, so if you stay low you can get closer; then pop up, delivery your weapon, turn around and head for home.

I think HARM has a fairly okey range (40+nm?) but I'm unsure about the specifics. Wikipedia states 57nm range, but... That's Wikipedia. :P

I certainly wouldn't be surprised if HARM and other similar missiles has the range to engage such a site - even a Maverick can pass 20nm if delivered from way up high and way fast (Mach 1.2 and angels 40).

Of course, the SA-10 might then have time to detect, lock and engage the HARMs. Not sure how good it's anti-missile capabilities are.

I tried this, 40 seconds, 39 of these was the SA-10 setting up :megalol::megalol::megalol:

I wonder if you can try it out in FC2. Su-25T has SEAD capabilities, so set up a mission with an SA-10 and try your luck... I think I might try after work actually.

Well the range depends a lot on speed and launch altitude (obviously), but flying high against an SA-10 is pretty much a death wish. I don't know what the real life method for dealing with them would be, but my assumption is the first choice would be a stealth aircraft (probably one of the reasons the Air Force wants the F-35 so badly). My understanding though is that they do generally have more range then a HARM without using jamming and terrain masking.

The really fun part about the SA-10 that hasn't been mentioned yet is you don't even get a launch warning. Since it uses Track Via Missile (like the Patriot) there isn't any obvious way for the RWR to distinguish a lock from a launch so you don't even see it coming.
