In the past I gave up on BS thinking it was impossible without a full HOTAS, TRACKIR and Rudder pedals. My question is, is anybody good at this sim without using a rudder pedal set, or is it pretty much impossible? I find the chopper extremely tough to control with my X52 and TrackIR, but controlling the HMS with a TrackIR is possible the coolest thing ever.

I'm using a x-52pro and I don't have any problems with rudder control.

I would not call myself an expert pilot of the ka-50 but I do a good enough job to take off, fly to ingress point, attack, and then land.

What I find to be really helpful is looking and the controls indicator by pressing ctrl + enter.

My greatest difficulty is actually pitch control when trimming.

I am the alpha and the omega

I have an X-52 (non-pro) I set up a slight deadzone on the twist so that every little movement didn't engage the rudder. I'm wanting to get pedals soon but I've been flying the Shark for awhile now and I've not had any major issues. TIR helps a LOT though haha.

For me Rudder Pedals are a must have in BS and add to the immersion, you really get a feeling of being there pumping those pedals. And you give your legs a real workout! :)

As I've learnt flying since Janes Apache Longbow I've always used rudder, I had a Saitek HOTAS at that time where the throttle-handle had an inbuilt rudder-control. For me I always been flying the rudder, and it would impossible without one, it would be like steering a motorcycle only with your body, and not with the steering-wheel.

I have the CH Pro throt and use the three finger tip buttons. Right button=right rudder. Left button=left rudder. Middle button kicks out CMs from both sides of the helicopter. I would like to have rudder pedals. They have been on my wish list for a long time, just not very high up :)

for a 100 bucks you can get Ch pedals, and they WILL make your life easier. Sorry, BS without rudder *** = FAIL.. FAIL.. FAIL.. ***

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

I've been flying with rudder pedals for about 6 months now, and I have to say that the IMMERSION (caps lock on that) is fantastic.

Before owning a set of rudder pedals I flew flight simulators for over a decade and never had set my hands... feet, I mean :D ... on rudder pedals.

I have to admit your brain gets kinda retard when you first try and tell it to control the rudders when your wrist wants to continue on its task it has been successfully been doing for the last years.

So, in a nutshell, hell yeah. It's more than possible. It's just fine. Rudders will give much better immersion, but they won't make you a better pilot.

Just on a side note, I have a friend of mine that used to fly IL2 1646 using a Playstation 2 gamepad. We constantly flew on the Spitx109 server, which is set at full realism, and he kicked the hell out of the enemy. The guy was really really good. After seeing that, I can more than honestly say that it's for the immersion and that's it. It definitively won't make anyone a better pilot. :pilotfly:

I put rudder on antenna knob on my TM Cougar. I would rather have pedals, but that's life.

I used to fly the chopper using the Z and X keys for rudder, but obviously these only give you a full deflection. Since I mapped the rudder to a rotary the chopper is a lot more fun to fly.

my 2 cents,

i went from a non-pro x52, to "testing" what it's like with g25(is it g25...whatever logitech wheel with 3 pedals is), and the accuracy you gain makes maneuvering much easier imho. Not needed, but helps

I am using a g940 in combination with Saiteks Combat Rudder Paddles and just recently bought a Cougar Throttle which I will fit with a BU0836X. Nevertheless, my squad mates are using the regular Evo or the Logitech stick with twist rudder and integrated throttle. They are pretty good with it, if not better (sometimes :) ). For one of them, I created a layout for the cheap Logitech which consisted everything essential. The trick is to use more than one modifier. This way, you can use the hat switch for three different things and every other key also. If you design a layout, think about what you will need simultaneously and what would fit together. In this Layout I used 2 keys on the base of the stick as modifier and got, for example:

Button x = Trim, Button x + Mod A = reset Trim, Button x + Mod B = Route AP on/off

Hatswitch = view controll, Hatswitch + Mod A = Shkval controll, Hatswitch + Mod B = Weapon selection

since you hold Mod A when you slew the Shkval, you want to have Lock Target and Trackinggate size increase/decrease also bound to a button and Mod A combination.

I would love to post the layout, but this lad just recently met a girl and wasn't online ever since. Damn real life...

so long

Mathias
