It's probably been said before, but simply a way to view the topography in the mission editor would be WONDERFUL. Ideally, a static 3d camera would be best but even terrain data would be nice!

Yes, this has been pleaded for to no end. But it is known how this would add to the ease of mission editing.

Yeah 3D editor its a good idea, the 3D engine can too be use for 3D library and payload screen...

With the actual 2D map its hard to find a correct place for ground units, like simulate ground crew with soldier cause its will always be so close or so far to aircraft/chopper or we put tank into tree or we don't find good location for SAM site or anything like that...

Its a nice idea, and static yeah but with zoom (or altitude) possibility, its important.

I find myself firing up the sim a couple times just to check the position of units I've created. By now this has become such a routine that I actually do all the creating first, and when I fire up the sim I write down a list of changes, possibly taking screenshots of the F10 map for later reference.

It's quite annoying hehe.

More importantly, I think it would add tons of replayability and would open the world of mission creating to a much broader range of people. The ME is intimidating, no 2 ways about it but I feel there are a lot of people who would love to create missions but don't because of the difficulty of not being able to see things in 3d real time.

Not to mention how much more QUICKLY editing would go, no more loading up maps to check positions, crap like that. It could all be done on the fly, missions would be so much easier to make.

In summary: 3d editor means more people make missions and quicker. It really is surprising this hasn't been implemented already... Not that I'm insulting all the hard work they've done already, I just REALLY want a 3D editor. I'm working on my own campaign right now and its daunting...

I agree. There is at least a good reason, the 3d world is contained on the simulator.exe while the ME is in the GUI.exe. (They're not called this I think but it's only a point I'm trying to make.) Still want it back though.

Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

I agree and disagree. I did a lot of modding back in the day in Battlefield Vietnam and BF2 which both had great editors but the 3d version I found was actually harder to place objects than a top down 2d one.

Granted you could see the terrain to place your objects on, but simarly the opposition could just fire up ME and use it as a tool for terrain masking their attacks.

Food for thought.

Agree! It would be fine with just a better terrain view in the designer. I would like ED to work more on ground forces AI and maby ad more buildings and stuff like the ones we got in the 1.1.1.0 patch.

What if there was a virtual view like the F11 tower view. Have it as a split screen (left side being the overhead map like we have now, and the right side with a virtual view).

Good idea! It would be enough even with a picture in picture view of the selected unit viewing from back and in the heading the unit has.

Bear in mind you have to use a lot of graphical processing power to do that.

Looking at terrain will use the 3d rendering engine and 2d map view obviously not.

To then move objects around in "real time" would then take a lot more processing power to carry out all the calculations for collision model of the object, ground mesh model, etc.

Yes I see that but atm. it would save processing power as I fire up the 3D engine and load the mission just to check, check again and again..... I guess all mission designers have it the same way ;)

If you can run the sim, I can't see the ME taking more processing power... and it still would be preferable to constantly reloading the map...

It is less processing power but 32bit Memory address space. As you might be aware, the current DCS is heavily restricted in a 32bit OS, having a Mission editor too, is problematic to say the least.

With the move to 64bit this is alleviated, but it is not the only restriction.

I'm sure, but I'm not asking for a full blown "live" editor merely a 3d camera, even static would do. Or hell, even some topographic info on the 2d map! Trying to make a campaign now, I find it difficult to find areas that work well for battles (not already used by other campaigns and such) and when I do, its a pain loading and reloading to set precise locations... doesn't help that I'm OCD I guess ;)

Yeah that's what I'm currently doing, having 2 monitors REALLY helps too, but a static camera would make me weep tears of joy... ;)
