You know hyperlobby does sound like a good idea. I bet DCS would get a lot of converts that way.

I don't do open servers, won't join them, won't operate one...To many horror stories about getting into a jet and less than 2 minutes later someone "call of duty" style comes in and kills you on the deck. We actually were talking about this last night in the 25th.

Same reason we lock our servers in the 25th when we host. That and we try to actually conduct internal training and certifications within the 25th. To have it open publicly just wouldn't work out well. I would be PISSED after conducting a 15 minute briefing, starting up, having my flight taxi to EOR, finish setting up our flight plan only to have some "hotrod" get airborne first because they think it's "fun" to kill pilots on the deck....

Last night when I started up a server the server list scrolled off the screen, so pretty active for a Tuesday night. Now all but like one or two of them were locked... but they were up! :)

I've had some luck with open servers. Never run into people Team Killing but definitely run into people not respecting (or even understanding) which runway is active (me landing after having contacted ATC properly while someone was taking off from the other end of the runway and a third person was AFK parked on the runway after landing) or not following waypoints or not getting on teamspeak then getting angry when they have no idea what's going on.

i have never - ever - had issues with a jerk on an open server.... i do on FC2 only and i think its because of the speed of startup... For some reason with both BS2 and A10C requiring the spastic, ritalin infused youth of today to sit on their hands through either automated or manual switchology, it seems to have mitigated the problem.

in short open servers are fine - no reason to fear them. The only thing about closed servers i like is the ability to control the QUALITY of flier.

Had some guy start on my last night for no reason in FC2 calling me names and then teamkilled me. Also said the server admins were retards and a few other names.

Kick/Ban it's really effective and motivating players to respect rules since we have master server verification.

^^ unfortunately as I said in my post... It seems the bizarre teamkill snot nosed kids seem to only rear their ugly heads in FC2 servers.... I never see them in the DCS servers - I postulate this is because the switchology and wait times of starting an aircraft in DCS is a deterrent to their hormonally clouded brains.

perhaps FC3 should try to replicate the start times for the lockon airframes to further leverage the phenomena

They happen in DCS servers, you just haven't been there to witness it. It was bad when A-10C first came out.

That is why you should learn and remember the command "/report <player> <message>"

This will give the admin an easy job of finding the offending chat and therby ban the player.

Some people do those things just because they do not know what they are doing. Like taking off the runway the wrong way, and team killing. They are not TRYING to be offensive.

A lot of people that play this sim have NO IDEA how the navigation system works. They honestly do not know what direction they should land in because they can not read the HSI. They really do not know how to use the radar (I don't either personally but I fly ground attack aircraft so I do not need it.... yet). Do friendlies even show up on the radar when your playing single player? If not they may TK people because they are expecting it to work like in SP.

Sometimes the problems in MP are caused by lack of knowledge, not jerks.

Yes, Flaming Cliffs 2 (and I will assume 3 as well).

I bring up radar because of people using fast movers and shooting down friendly aircraft, They either don't know how to use them or don't know the protocol to not luanch against a spiked friendly (or at least thats how I perceive it).

A requirement to use TS like in the LYNX server would go along way to improving this problem.

In my opinion this is a good move ALL public servers should require the use of TS.

There's plenty that can go wrong and result in a fratricide even when you're reasonably certain that you've accounted for everything.

Sorry but I don't want to read this entire thread. I just wanted to relay an experience I had today. Its been a struggle to go to the WH and BS Multiplayer browsers only to face the low population and the high numbers of locked servers. Today I bit the bullet and wiggled through all the Teamspeak hoops to get a password for the 74th. Well honestly "all the Teamspeak hoops" took a total of 30 seconds. But the result was one of the most enjoyable multiplayer experiences I've had since Flamming Cliffs. I flew no. 3 in a flight of 3 Ka50's. What a feaking blast. In the end we were defeated by 2 Mi28s but the experience was fantastic. The advantage DCS enjoys when compared to other MP flight sims like IL2 is that the population doesn't need to be high. The missions are Co-op, not H2H. Two professional players beats 20 jerkoffs any day of the week. Adding FC3 might well kill what I think is currently a very enjoyable high CAS/low-CAS dynamic. But right now I don't care about the meager online population. The people who do show up do so with a sense of mission.

Kudos to the squads and mission designers who keep it fun and professional, whatever the population.

Why?

Yeah, trick question; it won't. If you don't want fighters, don't place them in the mission. Problem solved. ;)

And having them there as an option, in a good environment (that is a locked server with teamspek/ventrilo requirement), you get the ability of being hunted by enemy fighters sure - but also the ability of being protected by allied fighters. My FC2/BS1 experience is really nice there - I'll fly my F-15 around the target area and advice the whirlybirds when they need to hide while I deter or defeat an incoming threat. (And of course, the best times ever was when GG and I escorted Panzertard's Ka-50 for several hours as it made it's way across the caucausus to get to the enemy airbase, that was funny. :D )

I agree with you about your view on the population The population does not NEED to be big but, to me, it is preferable. I will also agree it is better to have a "high quality" community that flies with a sense of purpose. As far as the IL2 / DCS comparison, maybe those sims are not as different as you might think, only the style you play them in. IL2 does have multiplayer co-op, most DCS servers have H2H.

Choosing to require TS in LYNX really was a good (actually it was great) decision. That by itself makes LYNX a go to server

I'm looking forward to FC3 with reservations. After the DCS/FC2 merger two years ago (and when I gave up on multiplayer, at least until WH) I see potential pitfalls. All will be forgiven if the Ka50 and Su25 share laser codes :

Quoting myself so that I don't need multiple quotes (read: lazy).

Grimes basically nailed my concerns. A few days after FC2 was online merged with BS1 I went on Teamspeak with the 104th. I had grown a bit tired of "Smokin Hole killed by Building" and grabbed a F-15 with Blue. On comms some guy (née a true gentleman) was giggling like a little girl after having splashed is 20th Ka50 in two days. That very same day, I quit multiplayer. Its not that I don't like PvP because I do. But the mindset is different than co-op. There is really nothing about PvP that will increase the enjoyment for a player flying CAS. There are more than enough threats either on the ground or close to the ground to keep him challenged. Adding F-15s with 28 AIM-120s bolted to the wings canopy and tail adds nothing positive to the experience for the slow-moving player. My reserevations are diminished however because, as others have said, this can all be controlled by the mission designer and the host. I will just avoid servers that are PvP (unless I am in a fighter).

Of course, i wasn't talking Vikhrs when I mentioned shared laser codes. The Ka50 has a laser that can be used to designate for another player. That same arrangement could, in theory, be used with an LGB from a Su25. Or maybe not. I havent a clue how Russia does theses things. But otherwise what's the point of more participants on the battlefield if they don't have anything to offer each other but "Nice shot! S!" ?

Regarding laser codes, this will not be possible for the Vikhr missiles, since there's no code to be shared. The Vikhr/Skhval combo employ a "grid" guidance method with detectors at the back of the missile, as opposed to the designation method employed in american LGB's and laser-guided versions of Hellfire and Maverick. This is why the Vikhr missile spirals towards the target (it is continually maneuvering to try to center itself in the laser grid being projected by the Skhval system) and also why it is very difficult to ripple-fire multiple weapons. (Though in FC1 this was possible with the Su-25T since the system was not accurately modeled.)
