  • no more useless search results that started to dominate on Google (general crap, content farms etc.)
  • less dealing with sick creep Google is - grabbing whatever personal data of yours it can, with no laws regulating the data storage and re-selling

Please, guys, share it, if you like it and have Facebook, Twitter or whatever social media account. DDG deserves it.

As a trivia - it's virtually a one man project and this guy takes on Google search! Not without success, let me add!

(Bump.) Just started trying this out today. Interesting thing about it: "DCS" on a Google search made from my P.C. shows up some cooking equipment company or something as the first result, and Eagle Dynamics as the second result. DuckDuckGo (uh ... can I call you DuckGo for short?) puts E.D. as the first result. Hmm! I'll bet the DuckGo algorithms use hits instead of bribes.

Typing "DCS" into google search gives me digitalcombatsimulator.com as the first hit.

What do you mean?

I suspect he means adjusting search results based on your location. If I type the word "pizza" into Google, I get a first link that actually allows me to purchase a delivered pizza. (Or well, it would if I lived closer to the city; my dynamic IP causes Google to see me as in-town when I'm actually not.) Also some results that, based on my location, give me locations and adresses for pizza parlors in my area.

Doing the same exercise in Duckduckgo gives me the option to order pizza. In the Unites States. As a sponsored link. (What was that mention of "bribes" with google search results?) Then the wiki page about what Pizza is, then another string of results that offer me the opportunity to order pizzas - yet again on a different continent, on the other side of the Atlantic ocean.

Huh, never seen this thread before today, but DuckDuckGo has indeed become my search engine of choice a couple of months ago because, as Weinberg says in the interview, the results are a lot better than the ones from Google. It's not just an interesting concept, it simply works.

Wow, I've just learned (after a year of using DDG!) that it now provides relevant region-specific results e.g. for Poland (shops etc.)! Just change your region in More > Settings!

Also I've looked into the bangs today. If you haven't tried them yet, compare "banged" and "unbanged" results:

A new informational website has been put together http://donttrack.us/ to quickly educate on why privacy online matters. I encourage you to click on the clickable blue keywords as it will take you to a webpage with an example of abuse of users data.

Speaking of DuckDuckGo, Gnome (a Linux Desktop) just recently switched from Google to DuckDuckGo as the default search engine on their pre-installed webbrowser. Good choice IMO and I hope other browsers will follow.

(via (ger))

This is the site I actually got the donttrackus link from :) (via phoronix.com)

Duckduckgo is awesome. Recently it helped me identify a movie of which I remembered only some bits

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=african+hide+in+russian+cargo+ship+film

That said the ignorance regarding privacy issues is serious, even among educated and tech-news readers. Recently I've read such a bloke saying that data harvesting is fine because 'an algorithm does it' (sic!).

Like such databases aren't processable or querriable by a human... I guess we'll have more and more 'educated people' who don't know how a tag cloud works.

EDIT:

See the att. :)

I prefer the old an good https://startpage.com/.

StartPage is the only third-party certified search engine in the world that does not record your IP address nor track your searches.

And it offers Google Search results with the highest SSL encryption score in the Industry.

You can also visit the search result websites via the anonymous StartpPage proxy.

StartPage exits unchallenged since 2008.
