arjuna Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 What is a ballpark figure for funding a new DCS aircraft? Another WW2 aircraft or one for which lots of source material could be found. Does anyone know what it would cost to assemble a team of people who could make a mod which could be included in DCS? I'm thinking more of a contribution from a few people with the money, but have you guys heard of kickstarter.com? What do you think of funding new DCS aircraft that way? Krebs20 Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Don't know. I would pay for the MIG21 mod for FC2 to be fully supported and put into DCS. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Bearitall Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Interesting Idea  But I see draw backs..for instance not everyone maybe on the same page for what aircraft to sponsor..so a huge debate will drag out long heated arguements..of which aircraft to develop... But nice thinking... www.virtualtuskegeeairmen.com

effte Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Or going the USAF way, saying "hey, I'm sitting on all the data for this aircraft - please model it for me! What kind of discount do I get if you can release a 'light' version to the public?" Financing it is the easy part. Sitting through all the griping from people who would rather have seen the Flying Flea modelled without contracting spontaneous combustion - that's the challenge! :D ----- Introduction to UTM/MGRS - Trying to get your head around what trim is, how it works and how to use it? - DCS helos vs the real world.
cichlidfan Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 For an established development house I would guess 3/4 to 1 million dollars. arjuna Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 a little confusing, no? Sorry, I meant both. How much do you think it costs ED, and how much would it cost to make a 3rd party mod that approaches DCS quality? The first part out of idle curiosity and the second part because it would be awesome if the community could fund mods in an organised way... voting for aircraft and volunteering money. Now don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the way things are... just a few recent developments have got me thinking - the crowd sourcing phenomenon and the fact that you can charge for mods now. 213 Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 when a single person can basically shame the dcs development team with a product of equal quality in a fraction of the time(beczel), you wonder if they're not overpaying someone. it really is quite simple if you have the tools and the understanding of how to use it. which is why user content would just explode once they explain how everything works.

effte Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 I'm really curious about what or who this mythical "beczel" product/person is. 213, care to explain? Not sure if you are aware, but beczl is an official ED modder. Not to downplay any of his efforts, but there are things he can do and things he can't do. Comparing his work to a fully developed module from ED simply underpinns the fact that you don't really have a grasp of what you are implying. ;) Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. And that's why you see tons of high quality, high fidelity addons for MSFS, all beeing produced by individuals and sold for only a fraction of the price you have to pay for a DCS product. Outline your intent and highlight your concerns. Nate I'm not sure Mr Mack or Wags could help. Their resources will be tied up in the upcoming projects, and they would probably just tell me they are happy with the pace of arrival of new aircraft. I'm asking the community what it would take for us to develop mods (let’s call them mods before we call them anything else) in an organised way. Let’s step back to FC2. How much would it cost to hire people to build a model, texture it... and implement it in the game? Surely we aren't talking about millions of pounds here... we are talking about a sum of money the community can easily raise. Aren't we? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] My PC Game Blog

I meant a closer relationship with ED with regard to information support for your development. You cited lack of information and access to information as a problem, it needn't be. There are many Official Modders - they enjoy direct access to the relevant dev and have a private forum in order to discuss such projects with them and other Modders. Of course it is probably too early for you to approach ED - for now most of the information for implementation is contained in the Wiki. If this progress further for you could consider closer contact with ED. Nate Ka-50 AutoPilot/stabilisation system description and operation by IvanK- Essential Reading
