Mnemonic
Realized my childhood dream last Saturday, flew in a sailplane over the Alps, I should say fantastic experience my friends... Actually this is in fact my first flight in anything smaller than 737. Here is a video I took during that day: After flying in Aerofly FS I strongly decided to search for a sailplane (glider) school nearby, and found this nice airport near Ziegelbrucke - Schaenis. Airport is positioned in very beautiful location, between two mountain ridges on a plateau. From one side is a Zurich lake, from the other - Walensee lake. Contacted Schaenis team, we planned the flight and I flew! I made a flight in a beautiful modern aircraft - Discus Duo X, with great instructor. Some photos... EtherealN
Congrats. It's a great feeling when the step-2 instructor gets out of the plane, puts his hand forward and says "congratulations, you have your license". :) I don't get to fly as much as I'd like, but you've definitely decided to pick up a good hobby. :) Discus Duo is a great plane as well. I never flew it myself, but it's one of those I really want to fly after test-sitting one. Mnemonic
Congrats. Thank you! :) It's a great feeling when the step-2 instructor gets out of the plane, puts his hand forward and says "congratulations, you have your license". :) I can imagine! I don't get to fly as much as I'd like, but you've definitely decided to pick up a good hobby. :) Discus Duo is a great plane as well. I never flew it myself, but it's one of those I really want to fly after test-sitting one.I tried only this one, and I can say it's very responsive plane, Instructor gave me controls during the flight for a few minutes so I tried a stick a little bit. Feels almost like joystick, sensitive and easy to move.
mikoyan
Cool man! thanks for sharing! I have been trying to get me a ride on a glider like the one you flew but it is too far from my house here in GA; the other thing I can do is a ride on a Boeing Stearman; I have been on a cessna; and it was a blast; best spend $90 dollars of my life! SimFreak
Gliders sure are fun. They give a very different perspective of flight. Especially engine out performance...

DEChengst
Awesome. I flew sailplanes for one season when I was 19 or so. Was forced to quit after I failed the required sport medical examination. Heart murmur was found and I got a diagnosis from a cardiologist. No more flying for me and I still miss it. Flying sailplanes is so beautiful, quiet and relaxing. Next best thing I can do is simulators. It's great but I still miss the feeling of total bliss sailplanes gave me. wingtip
congrats man, i learned to fly sailplanes in germany while stationed there till 92... i racked up 40+ hours with 26 of that being solo (wouldve been more but had trouble getting a medical signoff)... but our glider club was right on our base but was a german based club... i had several different instructors i rotated with so students get different methods of instruction... one of these instructors was an ex german fighter pilot and he taught me the most.... not the least which was some mild aerobatics :O) ive flown ka7, ka8, ask18, ask13 trainer, grob109, grob 103, ls4 and several others i cant even remember... we used a winch truck that had a big american v8 on the back tied to two different spools for two launches before a car would have to come retrieve the cables and pull back down to the start position.. i never thought glider flying would be fun but its a total blast and when you get in a thermal together with 2 or more other aircraft and even a eagle... your just speechless... airea
I would also recommend paragliding... Much easier to master than sail planes. Alps are very suitable for paragliding...
wingtip
maybe easier but sailplanes are alot safer and can go much higher. my longest flight was 4 hours and got to 2,200 meters just from a winch launch which is only good for a few hundred feet... and boy was it cold up that high and i had to pee so bad when i landed hahahah Dave Townsend http://www.indyhelis.com
airea
maybe easier but sailplanes are alot safer and can go much higher. my longest flight was 4 hours and got to 2,200 meters just from a winch launch which is only good for a few hundred feet... and boy was it cold up that high and i had to pee so bad when i landed hahahah In my country, altitudes above 5.000 meters (not feet) are common with paragliders. My personel altitude record is 3.500 m. So going higher is more related to thermals, and the type of the aircraft (of course you can climb up to 15.000m in a wave with a sailplane but not so common I guess:) ). Safety is another issue, I would agree on that most of the times, but not always...

Mnemonic
Autumn in Alps Last Saturday I did one more flight as a passanger on a Super Dimona motorglider. Route: Schaenis - Jungfrau. That was pretty windy day, we were jumping up and down while crossing mountain ridges, but I managed to do some photos ;) Hope you will like them, scenery looks pretty different comparing to spring / summer, lots of brown-gray colors.
