ah!

you mean a guided, rocket driven Projectile! - That's a missile!

Because my German dictionary tells me :

missile = aerodynamic vehicle :P

I reflect on my reflection

And I ask myself the question

"Have I the means to change direction, I go?"

I don't know.

Am I a missile, or am I a rocket?

If I'm a rocket, then I'm a very missile-y rocket

Am I a rocket or am I a missile

If I'm a missile that makes me a rocket of a missile

I fly on through the skies

But do I recognise

The target in my sight?

Now it's time to see if I guide

Am I a missile, or am I a rocket?

If I'm a rocket, then I'm a very missile-y rocket

Am I a rocket or am I a missile

If I'm a missile that makes me a rocket of a missile

I'm always running out of thrust

On that you know you can trust

One thing to understand: I go "Bang"

Am I a rocket or am I a missile

Doesn't matter what the propulsion is if you don't use the missile right.

This is how Chuck Norris does it:

What happened here? First 6 posts had the answer and now we're on page 3?huh.gif

None of the first six posts properly define the terms as they relate to military jargon. The general definitions given differ from the accepted military definitions in common use.

Actually, rocket is just a type of engine.

See below:

Etimology aside, the proper usage of "rocket" in the context of US military jargon is to describe an unguided (ballistic) rocket propelled projectile, i.e. an RPG, or the FROG/Scud.

Context or not, thats what a rocket IS.

What's your point?

When talking about military vernacular - and that's what we're doing - a rocket is unguided and a missile is guided.

Who gives a shit what dictionary.com has to say about the matter? What in the world does calling rocks and beer cans "missiles" add to the conversation? Such a definition, while academically accurate, is meaningless in the context it is being discussed.

Semantics. Anything with rocket propulsion is considered a rocket.

Any projectile (except a bullet) launched through the air intended for a target is a missile, be it arrow, spear or rocket.

Why is there an exception for the bullet?

What's the bullet definition then?

You seem to give a shit quite a bit. Get off your high horse.

That is probably a translation blooper. If I know my russian right (and it's not exactly good), it uses the same word (ракета - "raketa") for both "rocket" and "missile".

EDIT: Wait, I thought you were talking about the Berkut system (NATO name SA-1). In the case of the S-25-L it's probably called a rocket because it's originally an unguided rocket that had a guidance system attached. Compare to the western DAGR system (Direct Attack Guided Rocket) which is based on the Hydra rocket.

Purely an observation, but I see a lot of Russian literature will use "ракета" and alot of Russians themselves will say/write 'rocket' in English when referring even to A2A missiles.

I thought about it the wrong way, I was thinking in the lines of "shrapnel". A bullet is also a missile, yes.

But like BlueRidge said this thread is in context of military jargon, where;

  • Powered and unguided - Rocket
  • Powered and guided - Missile
  • Unpowered and unguided - Bomb
  • Unpowered and guided - Smart bomb
  • Fired from barrel - Bullet/shell

Get off your high horse

Yeah, sorry for trying to provide an answer a little more meaningful than "all rockets are rockets".

Next time, you guys can quibble over the categorization of rocks and beer cans without me and my high horse prancing about.

Yep. And they wonder why a lot of the people able to answer many of the questions posed on these forums don't bother wasting their time. Hardly surprising given that often when such questions are answered correctly, those answers are at best ignored and at worst berated.

You do that. Thanks!
