Looks purty!

You've gotta love the pile of boxes before you start.

That looks like the same model Zalman I have. Mine is the one with the blue LEDs since, for some reason, half my office glows blue so I just go with the flow. :D

EDIT: Does that cooler have a clip to hold it down that is a real PITA?

Mine is the one with the blue lights also and yes it came with a clip to hold it down. It wasn't that hard installing, but I'm still trying to fix the cable mess that is going on.

To eliminae cable mess you'd need to have a case that accomodated cable routing behind the motherboard... maybe as next upgrade Cali? :)

I had exact same CPU fan/heatsink years back, that was before I tried water cooling.

Congrats on the upgrade, it was about time :D

Thx Kuky and wow you changed your sig! To fix some of the cable problem, I'm just gonna start cutting! :D

Yes it was about time I upgraded, sometimes you gotta put family first.

This is a great build Cali! I paused my upgrade just because the new Intel Ivy Bridge CPU had some heating problems. It may anyhow be interesting to get some performance data regarding DCS World from your build. Please let us know :joystick:

Thx Polecat and Hijack I plan on enjoying it! I was going to get a Ivy Bridge also but after researching it more saw that the SB would be a better option for me

@ Pikey, I'm in the US, that's why it's cheaper.

Hey, make sure to set up an FPS test run - if you have a FRAPS license (or if the freeware version supports it, I can't remember), collect some data to quantify exactly how much of a difference it'll make. I'm curious since, well, that's a pretty huge upgrade you're doing. :D

Just installed FC2 today and with my old in-game settings I was getting 25-30 on the ground. With the new system, same settings (no tweaks applied yet in the config) I'm getting a steady 60+ FPS :) Gonna add mirrors, water to high and terrain to high and see what happens.

I suspect it will still be 60+. :)

If I remember right, this computer at low/semi-low settings give 120-160 FPS in A-10C, and yours should be even better. :) FC2 just gets slaughtered by it, aside from the odd load-stutter etcetera.

Water on high still kills FPS, but I never liked the way it looked anyway. Needless to say I still get 60+ with everything set to high expect water. I'll do some more testing tomorrow with settings. Still need to O/C the CPU also.

EDIT: Guess I'm gonna have to buy A-10C sometime now.

Load times are much faster now then my last system. This system murders DCS World, just tested it out....:) everything on high except water, 60 FPS and higher depending on what was going on. In the fly by view FPS went up to 122! then back to about 60.

Really too bad that DCS/FC doesn't take full advantage of multi-threaded ops and all cores. It's also heavily CPU bottlenecked, so a kickass GPU doesn't automatically equal superior framerates compared to a mid-range card.

None the less, the average framerate sits pretty high with a good gaming rig, even if it still dips into the 40s with maxed out settings over cities and with lots of models to render. This seems to hold true in DCS/FC for most systems regardless of exact hardware as long as it's mid-range to high-end...

I don't mind if FPS dip into the 40's especially if settings are maxed out. My last system was silkly smooth even when the FPS dipped into the 20's. I know I could have bought a cheaper card and been fine with DCS, FC2, BMS and Arma, but I wanted more eye candy and something that would be fine in the future.

Nothing wrong with wanting eye candy and maxed out frames! I didn't need to sell my GTX 460s (SLI) and get a GTX 670, but I'm glad I did! :D

This new system kills Arma II and BMS and I haven't even O/C'ed it yet. I'll most likely test that out next Friday.

i5 is a great chip

Yeah, this is a great chip. I OC'd my chip by a simple Genie button on my MSI board to from 3.4 to 4.2gig and I only use an HD6950 gpu but on full bifta settings I get around 45-50fps;)

Just tried out A-10C and this computer is a BEAST! Getting like 70+ frames in the pit. I still need to config things and that was without messing with the MFD's.

Have fun Cali, might the other users now realise Sandy/Ivy bridge are most adequate platforms from both the economical and technical perspectives.

Who needs Sandy-E for gaming???
