Hey guys,

I am an A-10 pilot and have no idea how the KA50 works.

I just got told by a buddy in my mission that his chopper started spitting out warnings due to...

Here we go...

COLD, his stuff froze.

It's -4°C at ground level. I can NOT imagine that RUSSIANS build a chopper that freezes under these conditions...

Maybe it's a bug?

What can you guys tell me! Does a KA-50 really become a little bitch when it gets a bit cold?

Thanks in advance!

Your guy should learn to utilize the anti-ice equipment.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

I just gave him the link to this thread.

Are we talking for the version 1.2.1? Because I don't remember like a problem before.

I took off in -5 or -20°C before...

Yes. Go up in altitude in the mountains where the snowpack is.

I get warnings from either the EKRAN or the overhead warning lights to turn on the deicing switches. I only got this warning once in about a year flying the Black Shark, might be a voice warning. It rarely happens to me. Somewhere in the ABRIS pages will tell you the outside air temperature. I am pretty sure each pre-programmed waypoint designates the air temperature. Best to read your mission orders before start-up. There are switches overhead where the dust choice switch is located, and left of that. The right-side wall panel deicing switch does not function in my versions of BS1 or BS2.

I got the warning once. I immediately turned the switches on, I was fine.

Define "frozen". Can you provide a track?

Do the engines start correctly? Is the rotorbrake set to off? Is the problem with rotor RPM, or just with the flight instruments (airspeed, altitude)? Does something break after you get airborne? Can you get airborne at all?

I haven't flown the Shark in 1.2.2 yet, but I'm very sure the Ka-50 can be operated in cold environments. Actually, it loves cold environments. :)

no need for a track.

If you hear the rotor ice warning a couple times it is too late. It is telling you the conditions are there for icing and it will play if rotor ice is working or not.

There are 4 anti-icing controls you need to use while in winter otherwise you may have a failure. Just like real life, simple 'pilot sh**". :)

Out of interest - can they overheat? Is it modeled? If yes, does it overheat in cold weather conditions?

Yes, I believe they can overheat, but I don't think that's modeled. I just rechecked the Leading Edge Training video. It says the engine anti ice must not be turned on if the outside air temperature is above 5°C. To be on the safe side, I'd switch that on (along with the others) right during start up if the outside air temperature is around or below 0° (according to the mission briefing). If the air is warmer, the Ekran message is a good reminder that the chopper is now in a cold environment (usually during a climb) where it's necessary to switch on the anti ice systems. And let's not forget, we finally got a working temperature gauge in 1.2.1, so no more guesswork required. :)

Didn't somebody say once that the blade lifetime is drastically reduced if they are allowed to overheat? I seem to remember something along the lines...

Yes, I stand corrected. Don't turn on the rotor de-ice unless the EKRAN says to do so. Don't turn on the engine anti-ice for continuous operation above 5C (Can test for up to 5 minutes between 5C and 15C and for up to 2 minutes between 15C and 25C). Pitot and AoA are fine at any temperature.

rotor anti ice is not enough.

Search for another switch in the overhead panel near rotor anti-ice that is "Engine anti ice "
