Yellonet Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 Today Sweden's last Viggen fighters were retired... sad for such a beauty. Salute and rest in peace :icon_jook i7-2600k@4GHz, 8GB, R9 280X 3GB, SSD, HOTAS WH, Pro Flight Combat Pedals, TIR5
Woodstock Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 S! *sob* It´s only a few months ago that I talked to Viggen pilots on the radio during exercise ELITE2005. I always liked the shape of the Viggen. The design was 25 years ahead of it´s time. "For aviators like us, the sky is not the limit - it's our home!"

These days that makes you shudder . . . . slab surfaces work better at supersonic speeds. Didn't seem to put off the Viggen pilots, though :p http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/britgliderpilot/BS2Britgliderpilot-1.jpg
Pilotasso Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 hmmm how many Gripens do the swedes have? It feels a bit too early so soon into the dripens production.... .
Yellonet Posted November 25, 2005 Author Posted November 25, 2005 hmmm how many Gripens do the swedes have? It feels a bit too early so soon into the dripens production....170+ of 204 ordered. i7-2600k@4GHz, 8GB, R9 280X 3GB, SSD, HOTAS WH, Pro Flight Combat Pedals, TIR5

Didn't seem to put off the Viggen pilots, though :p I couldnt get into the ins and outs of it, but i was watchin a program a while back about the viggen, and it was saying that it was years ahead of its time in design. I couldnt say anything about control surfaces, but the majority of pilots on that program, never had anything but good words to say about it and also about its futuristic design which some of the features were adopted for other aircraft that are in service today.

Hmm.. from still standing to 10,000 meters in about 100 seconds... is that good? i7-2600k@4GHz, 8GB, R9 280X 3GB, SSD, HOTAS WH, Pro Flight Combat Pedals, TIR5
Guest EVIL-SCOTSMAN Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 compared to the f15 rate of climb no. :)
Yellonet Posted November 25, 2005 Author Posted November 25, 2005 compared to the f15 rate of climb no. :)Tried it now and I managed to get there in 85 seconds... obviously someone else can make it faster. i7-2600k@4GHz, 8GB, R9 280X 3GB, SSD, HOTAS WH, Pro Flight Combat Pedals, TIR5
Kevlon Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 S! to the Viggen! very nice looking plane S! to Saab [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Starlight Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 compared to the f15 rate of climb no. :) In "Modern Air Combat" Bill Gunston said the Viggen was 4 to 11 times less expensive than US fighters. The book was printed in 1983, so I don't know which US fighters he's talking about. Anyway, the Viggen had outstanding performance, a revolutionary and modern design, coupled with good avionics. A good bargain at that price.
Cobra360 Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 Yes but it was never effectivly marketed for export. If it was it could have been a big success for Saab. The same could have happen the JAS-39 but the the C/D version came along with NATO standard equipment and IFR to help it achieve some exports.

JaNk0 Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 I'm a Sweed but i'm not sad that Viggen is retiering. What the Swedish Airforce stil got is one heck of an aircraft. yes people....that's right Saab JAS 39 Gripen! Too bad that is doesn't sell any good...:( [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Guest EVIL-SCOTSMAN Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 I dunno bout the rest of you, but I think the whole family of SAAB jets are cool Aircraft. they look real nice and always did have some sort of technical feature that was ahead of its time. The gripen looks real sweet :D
Force_Feedback Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 A question that is me bugging me for some time: why do the Swedish Gripens (Viggens too) always have the rollerons on the AIM-9s removed? I know it's because of wear, but why at such a big scale, and do live aim-9s have them in Sweden? And why do they fly with Mavericks that have the guidance fins removed? Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:
Yellonet Posted November 25, 2005 Author Posted November 25, 2005 I dunno bout the rest of you, but I think the whole family of SAAB jets are cool Aircraft. they look real nice and always did have some sort of technical feature that was ahead of its time. The gripen looks real sweet :DIt sure does look good and it's one of the 3-4 most modern planes in the world. It's 'built in' instability gives it suberb manueverability, and it's advanced radar with datalink gives it an advantage in combat as up to four planes can share their radar information, so basically you could have one plane with the radar on and three others that see the same things without having their radar putting out any energy. I think they can also lock with one plane and launch from another... i7-2600k@4GHz, 8GB, R9 280X 3GB, SSD, HOTAS WH, Pro Flight Combat Pedals, TIR5
Cobra360 Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 Is that not because they are inert Mavs that have the fins removed, AFAIK it's the same on USAF Mavs.

I do not disagree, cheap, does the job that it was made for, ok probably would have a problem going up against the 14s and 15s of that period, but they knew they werent gonna be going up against them, so what they had was probably perfect for what the swedes needed it for. Since they out of service, now is the time to buy one as a garden ornament, like that idiot jeremy clarkson with his English Electric lightning garden feature.
Cobra360 Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 with datalink gives it an advantage in combat as up to four planes can share their radar information, so basically you could have one plane with the radar on and three others that see the same things without having their radar putting out any energy. Yellonet Posted November 25, 2005 Author Posted November 25, 2005 Thats not really new, F-14s and F-15s have being doing that for years.Ok, is it modelled in LockOn? i7-2600k@4GHz, 8GB, R9 280X 3GB, SSD, HOTAS WH, Pro Flight Combat Pedals, TIR5
GGTharos Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 In fact, this has been an AMRAAM feature for a while now. AFAIK ... :icon_twis [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
GGTharos Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 Ok, is it modelled in LockOn? No, and likely won't be for a while [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Cobra360 Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 No, because the F-15 that is modeled in lockon is of an older standard than whats flying today. And a lot of that info is classified in how it works.
