Phantom88 Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 The STOVL Variant of The Lightning II has been grounded because of a fuel problem http://www.businessinsider.com/the-f-35b-been-grounded-david-cenciotti-the-aviationist-2013-1 Patrick
Cali Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Another set back in a costly program. i7-4820k @ 3.7, Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB 1866mhz EVGA GTX 970 2GB, 256GB SSD, 500GB WD, TM Warthog, TM Cougar MFD's, Saitek Combat Pedals, TrackIR 5, G15 keyboard, 55" 4K LED
joey45 Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 The B version is a white elephant.... or a very deep hole. Or a very expensive test. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Phantom88 Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 And has the "C" Version even made a successful Carrier Trap yet?Last I heard they were redesigning the Tailhook. Patrick
aaron886 Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Not on a carrier, but it is making arrested landings at Lakehurst. (Successfully, I might add, much to the chagrin of those who were screaming about hook problems.)
tflash Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 For the trap see 5:37 or 5:50 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Dude,"IF" They were so successful,They'd be putting them down on a Carrier and letting Everyone and their Brother know about it!! FACT:thumbup: Patrick

mvsgas Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 The STOVL version of the F-35 is the most complicated, of course it will have the most challenges and difficulty. Also, you realize is not a fuel problems, but an engine one? According to the article posted in the original post. The engine is super complicated, of course it will have its teething problems. Anyone remember the YAK-141 and its difficulties with the same power plant idea? To whom it may concern, I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that. Thank you for you patience. Many people don't want the truth, they want constant reassurance that whatever misconception/fallacies they believe in are true..

Yes, quote from the article ....“a failure to a propulsion fueldraulic line, which enables movement in the actuators for the STOVL’s exhaust system.”[unquote] Iv'e never heard the term "Fueldraulic" before. Patrick
Cali Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 I never heard of a line like that either and I work on aircraft fuel systems :book: i7-4820k @ 3.7, Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB 1866mhz EVGA GTX 970 2GB, 256GB SSD, 500GB WD, TM Warthog, TM Cougar MFD's, Saitek Combat Pedals, TrackIR 5, G15 keyboard, 55" 4K LED
Weta43 Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Not a bad idea though - would save weight and space - just increase the pressure on the fuel pump, put a "T" on the fuel line somewhere and use fuel as your hydraulic fluid.. Cheers.

That's a horrible idea, increase the psi to what over 1000psi? I'm sure they thought of that.....briefly. i7-4820k @ 3.7, Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB 1866mhz EVGA GTX 970 2GB, 256GB SSD, 500GB WD, TM Warthog, TM Cougar MFD's, Saitek Combat Pedals, TrackIR 5, G15 keyboard, 55" 4K LED
Griffin Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 (edited) Perhaps they mean the common use of fuel as hydraulic fluid in the engine's own systems. Commercial turbofans use fuel to actuate VSV/IGV, VBV and cooling valves through Hydro Mechanical Unit. The hydraulic fluid itself is not used anywhere in the engine to control it's systems. aaron886 Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 That's a horrible idea, increase the psi to what over 1000psi? I'm sure they thought of that.....briefly. Yeah. They're probably a bunch of morons with no qualifications. :D
Weta43 Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 I didn't think it would be replacing ALL hydraulics, only some where fuel was already headinf, and hydraulic fluid not - "Commercial turbofans use fuel to actuate VSV/IGV, VBV and cooling valves through Hydro Mechanical Unit. " Isn't that effectively " put(ting) a "T" on the fuel line somewhere and use(ing) fuel as your hydraulic fluid.. " ? Cheers.
marcos Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Looks more and more like the Royal Navy will end up with Rafale Ms every day.
aaron886 Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Can you actually imagine that happening? :D Somehow I feel like the MoD would rather burn...
Griffin Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Isn't that effectively " put(ting) a "T" on the fuel line somewhere and use(ing) fuel as your hydraulic fluid.. " ? I guess so. :) The fuel goes to the HMU which meters and distributes fuel for burning and various control systems. Do I remember wrong or does the F-18 actuate the exhaust nozzle with "fueldraulics"?
sobek Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 That's a horrible idea, increase the psi to what over 1000psi? I'm sure they thought of that.....briefly. What's the worst thing that could happen? Would it turn solid? Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
joey45 Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 What's the worst thing that could happen?... Don't say that..:) The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. sobek Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Don't say that..:) I'm serious, the fuel pump of a direct inject diesel engine pressurizes the fuel to the same order of magnitude to achieve good atomization and what happens to the fuel as long as it's inside the lines? Precious little. Kerosene is even more inert than diesel fuel. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
4c Hajduk Veljko Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 I don't think this is a big deal. They had a pipe or hose that was leaking or completely failed. Luckily, nobody got hurt. They'll fix this ... My question is, what in the world do we need F-35B for? We have 12 carriers and countries (many of them corrupt) that allow us to use runways all throughout the world. Why are we spending billions, and billions and billions of dollars on VTOL? Who's going to buy this airplane? Jona33 Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Can you actually imagine that happening? :D Somehow I feel like the MoD would rather burn... I think it would be pretty cool, I like the Rafale. The french come up with some sweet bits of kit (and great food. :D) Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing
aaron886 Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 One thing worth thinking about (although obviously not some sort of tactical necessity) is the capability it brings to the ridiculous number of amphibious assault carriers the US has. I think it would be pretty cool, I like the Rafale. The french come up with some sweet bits of kit (and great food. :D) I hope they consider it a little more thoroughly than that... ;)
