16-Core Piledrivers are a Force to be reckoned with.

I think the big deal here is that most reviews came "early" (with embargoed manufacturing samples), meaning they likely happened before Microsoft caught up. Techreport.com discussed this aspect as well, though I don't recall if it was in the review itself or one of their followup articles.

Basically, the bulldozer architecture was so different from what has normally been done in multicore archs that the thread scheduling needs to be done in a different way. (The OS has to intelligently manage threads depending on what types of computation they're heavy in, to ensure that two FP-heavy processes don't end up on the same "module", for example.) I know I read that Microsoft was working on that, but I have not found any articles that does a before/after comparison. (However, Piledriver reviews should include this effect if it has already been implemented by Microsoft.)

Bulldozer also had Severe Throttling Issues. (not related to Temps or vCore)

Bulldozer was released before the OS was adjusted, (TBH i saw no difference after the "Patch")

The IPC of Bulldozer was Below the PhenomII's, and this basically nudged me to start using my GPU to do most of the Work when video editing and stuff using DirectCompute.

Once AMD Solves the Low IPC, the slow cache, and the Power Consumption in overclocking, it's game on.

Intel is at a wall, Silicon can only do so much, Intel beat AMD to that wall (I dont think people remember when we had like 5 or 6 different CPU manufacturers. AMD, Intel, CyRix, IDT, VIA, Rise Technology, and a few sub Brands all made 386, 486,586, and Pentium CPUs.

In 1995 Cyrix's MediaGX CPU was the best, but it never saw Mass Fabrication, the MediaGX CPU was a 586 120Mhz CPU with SPU and GPU Built onto it. CyRix's MII 300Mhz CPU was on par with AMD and Intel 433 Mhz parts...

So... who's to say we dont need a 3rd Competitor in the High Performance CPU Market..

Cyrix stuck it to both AMD and Intel in the 90s, but ended up being bought by VIA, as the company was constantly in court with Intel over Patent and Licensing Issues, and Parent Company decided to Leave the CPU Market, so Engineers left, and Cyrix was sold to VIA.

But Like I said, Performance Wise in IPC and Clockspeed, Intel has hit the wall, and AMD is right behind them,

So now instead of Higher Clocks and IPC, they are designing Chips with more threads, Lower Power, etc.

The First one to come up with a CPU that doesnt rely on Silicon will be able to get past that barrier. (Can You say Light/Glass Based Architecture?)

shakes his head at the "benchmarks" about FX8120/8150 beign bad for gaming, while looking at the fact that I played across 5 screens on a 8120 *NOT OVERCLOCKED* at 60 Frames/sec for over a year.

So far my rig is doing it's job. I hope the next processor is also an AM3 socket.

Well, just recieved the sabertooth 990 fx rev.2 board and the 8350 proc. Will be using it till I get out of the hospital mid may. Then rebuild using the ivy. Momma will get this machine, seeing how she wont be doing DCS.

Good and interesting explanation Skate. What about Quantum mathematics though? I wonder if that thing will go into our processors in the future... :)

The graphene is an interesting thing but looks pretty expensive, though if I understand well, the quantum mathematics allow more operations at the same time. But I might be quiet wrong. Still, I think since 2009 we are pretty much hitting "the wall" as they said, in terms of performances, I feel like the companies played with their capabilities for a while to keep the market busy but the more I look at what is available, I find nothing new, they just add more and more quantity. I also think they are a bit scared of creating a whole new type of CPU...

Since I will be giving the 8350/fx990 rev.2 to my wife after the hospital stay, I want to go Intel. Which gives me shudders since I have been a amd man since I started using computers, and then building em. I know NOTHING of intel. I hear intel is coming out with haswell. Money is no issue to a point. Prob. go the I7 way, but know NOTHING of mobo's that will go with it.

Any help/links would be useful.

TIA

OK, so without OC I have a framerate of 37-58 biggrin.gif!!!!

With almost everything on the highest setting. With TGP AND Mavericks powered. ( Only Range on medium and mirrors off; cockpitshadows on; Vsync off; treeshadows off; shadows are currently medium, but It seems I can put them on high with only 2 frames loss)

pilotfly.gifjoystick.gif

In the shark I have the same rate, but with a few negative spikes ( like 12 frames for four seconds. I don´t really know why they are here.detective.gif )

So, I for one, do highly recommend the 6300. Those framerates are awesome tongue.gif thumbup.gif

When you say Next CPUs do you mean the line after Piledriver? I know Piledriver is going to be AM3+. I am thinking of selling my 8150 and getting a 8350. I am not having major problems I just want better performance and I think I can sell the 8150 at a fair enough price to make it appealing to someone who wants to upgrade and not take a beating. SZ is right about the multitasking. I can have Photoshop running with IL2 open in the background while doing a virus scan and surfing and listening to WinAmp and nit a stutter anywhere. Switch over to IL2 and fly while doing a download without a hiccup.

Bulldozer and PileDriver, Both use AM3+

Steam Roller, and Excavator will also use AM3+.

Yeah I knew about BD & PD.. but it is good to know that the next two will also. I just upgraded to a PD .. selling my 6 month old BD for $125 if anyone is interested.
