What the heck? No idea what I'm doing wrong. I'm obtaining good locks on ground targets and I get what appears to be valid launch authorization. I fire and watch the Vikhr dropping onto the ground in front of the target.

This baffles me a little because in my experience if the simulator believes you have a valid lock, it will let you launch. Otherwise if you're doing something wrong, the missile won't even leave the tube/rail.

Any ideas?

I find that, once you have launched you have to keep your wings reasonably level and the laser pointed directly onto the target. Hope that helps

I had a very similar problem the other day flying Black Shark. I would get a lock, release the Vikhr and it would go AWOL half the time. Someone replied I should double-check weather settings. It turned out to be the wind which I had cranked up and variable. Even though the missile is laser guided at the speed it is going it doesn't take a whole lot to put it off course enough for a good correction to be impossible. IOW, "realism". Just a thought as no one has mentioned wind yet. it is also possible for a moving target to dodge the missile at the last moment and I have had that happen.

Wrong word: should be "impossible", not "possible"

I think they just go ballistic, a ballistic curve into the ground, without any changes in the azimuth due to wind...

Do you keep the laser active during the entire flight of the missile?

You have to keep the laser on the target all the way, until it hits.

Another long shot ... What is your altitude? The missile will drop quite a bit until it builds some lift and could hit the ground if you are too low.

I agree with Trubshaw.

Keep the plane nice and steady for launch and keep it stable for the laser while the missile is spiraling in to target. Slow down if you have to to stay back from AAA and ground fire. Very few misses for me with that method and if they do they are usually only just a fraction short.

Do you fly towards the target? With the Vikhrs, since they are laser beam riding, you have to fly straight towards the target until the missile hits. I usually keep the cross in the center of the HUD on the target after launch until the missile hits.

I think I solved the problem by installing the latest copy of DCS World. The missiles are performing reliably now! I've been using an ancient copy of DCS. Thanks for all the input though.
