pacotito Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 While the screen can only display one portion of the world it still has to calculate everything that isn't visible on screen. So while Iracing calculates the physics for say 24 cars dcs is calculating the physics of 24 aircraft/other plus 500 projectile trajectories plus wind ect ect. Which is the reason dcs is more CPU bound. Its more number crunching than being "pretty". Pacotito I7-5820k@4.5 Z99 extreme4 16gb ddr4 520gb ssd. Gigabyte ssc GTX960 SSC 4gb
howie87 Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Put your dcs install on an SSD. Was a right PITA to reinstall everything but was probably the best decision I ever made and eliminated most of the 'choppiness' for me.
HiJack Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Yes, always get rid of the old settings and start all over is the best.
UrbanTerrorist Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Are the file structure the same in version 1.2.4 ? I usually backup my latest install, install the new update, then copy over my Mods and Input config files across to the new version. This I find to be the less painful way of updating. I also use the "torrents" to download. It has taken 20 minutes for DCS world, A10-C and Combined Arms to d/l. Forget the auto updater and seperate downloads. takes a whole day/night on some connections.
Anatoli-Kagari9 Posted May 1, 2013 Author Posted May 1, 2013 My graphics and controller settings were preserved. The graphics.cfg no longer exists! Make sure you read the readme file in the Config folder to find out how to change your settings starting 1.2.4... Flight Simulation is the Virtual Materialization of a Dream...

So what you are saying... is that the bottleneck with DCS is the CPU and not the GFX processor? So if my GFX is telling me my FPS has dropped from +60 to about 10... is that the GFX card not coping or the CPU struggling to refresh it with usable data? It also appears that DCS is using the HDD as a swap file from what others are saying by recommending a SSD. Hmmm, time for an upgrade or just go race car simming :) Thanks for your thoughts on this guys... I am somewhat more enlightened :chair: IJammer
Icerock Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Last night, after watching the Auto-Updater sit at 48 Kb/s last night I decided to download the complete DCS World and all modules manually, remove everything, then do a fresh install. Installed DCS World 1.2.4 this morning without issue, anything special I should do to reinstall all the updated modules, i.e. sequence of install?

There remains some aspects of the effects that have some performance "bugs", such as the cluster bombs and MLRS impacts. In that specific case it's a problem that is being worked on as a priority. arteedecco Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 ... such as the cluster bombs and MLRS impacts. In that specific case it's a problem that is being worked on as a priority. Does this include impacts / explosions from arty and FFARs fired from aircraft? I've noticed this huge lag impact with anything that causes a lot of explosions in a tight area simultaneously, not just CBUs and MLRS. arteedecco Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 BTW, with the auto update... mine errored out toward the end of the download claiming, "cancelled by user", which was not true. However, I simply re-triggered the auto-updater and after just a few moments it verified the files, downloaded the last remaining bit, and ran the install successfully. No problems using my modules yet (only tried FC3 and A-10C thus far... have not yet tried BS2, CA, or P-51D, but everything seems fine so far). My recommendation is that if your auto-updater failed... first try re-triggering it from the Start >> All Programs >> Eagle Dynamics >> DCS World >> Check for Updates (I think that's the name of it), before going through and running the full 5GB+ dl of the entire DCS World again. Hope that helps... and that it wasn't just that I got lucky! Espectro Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I've tried several times by autoupdate and always get the same error I think that's not a connection issue since the update validate objects, download some small files and then when initiate the big one shows the error. Any suggestions? Thanks
ED Team c0ff Posted May 1, 2013 ED Team Posted May 1, 2013 I think that's not a connection issue since the update validate objects, download some small files and then when initiate the big one shows the error. The updater sometimes can't properly detect server overload condition and throws this error. Most probably it's a connection issue, unless you have some antivirus running. Try to update again. IJammer Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I read on another thread that the 'hash' error is when the d/load server overloads, it then kicks some clients off resulting in a 'hash' error. From what I read you can just re-start the updater from the DCS folder and it will kick in again and continue where it left off. I am holding off until the rush is over...
vanzant_cl Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 if you download it from scratch (by torrent) it will be ready in no longer than 2 hours (with all the modules) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
arteedecco Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 if you download it from scratch (by torrent) it will be ready in no longer than 2 hours (with all the modules) Yeah... despite my own advice (and good fortune with the auto updater) the torrent seems the best way immediately after a new release. Incidentally... what about making updates available via torrent @c0ff? ENO Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Auto update for 10 hours got me through 235mb. Torrent for about 50 minutes got me the full install. In a week auto update will be faster, and torrent will be outrageous. As they get better at preserving custom settings a reinstall seems the goto. Icerock Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 if you download it from scratch (by torrent) it will be ready in no longer than 2 hours (with all the modules) I think that's the best way, little chance of some hiccup causing hours of frustration when the game is having issues trying to figure out why. In my case I was a few versions back so it made even more sense...

bigian Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I installed by torrent overnight both the 5Gb DCS world and a10 module, installed them today and selected a different drive - both owrked fine and didn't need serial number or lost an installation. Can now remove the older version from my C drive and free up some space. Works a treat even finally managed to get my brake pedals workign properly. First three landings were the best ever !!!
