311Gryphon Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Dropping the 31 or 38 is a set it and forget it evolution. No worry about mark points etc. The Mark Points are only for setting up the bomb run for multiple release. With the Mark Points properly set you don't have to mess with designating a SPI for every target then releasing the bomb. You simply cycle the Mark Point, release, cycle the Mark Point, release, etc. http://www.youtube.com/user/311Gryphon i7-8700, 32 GB DDR4 3000, GTX 1080 TI 11GB, 240 GB SSD, 2TB HDD, Dual (sometimes Triple) monitor, TM Warthog HOTAS, Saitek Pro Combat Pedals, TrackIR [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
311Gryphon Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Here is the video I was looking for earlier using Markpoints. It's from the beta so I'm not sure if anything has changed between then and now. Thanks. http://www.youtube.com/user/311Gryphon i7-8700, 32 GB DDR4 3000, GTX 1080 TI 11GB, 240 GB SSD, 2TB HDD, Dual (sometimes Triple) monitor, TM Warthog HOTAS, Saitek Pro Combat Pedals, TrackIR [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
311Gryphon Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 "Stealth rifle" - hah! You mean a 30 pound (unloaded) 57" long gun with a giant muzzle brake on the end isn't "stealthy"? I'm perplexed! http://www.youtube.com/user/311Gryphon i7-8700, 32 GB DDR4 3000, GTX 1080 TI 11GB, 240 GB SSD, 2TB HDD, Dual (sometimes Triple) monitor, TM Warthog HOTAS, Saitek Pro Combat Pedals, TrackIR [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

If you try to identify the Gun Nozzle from 1,5 miles away while it is hidden in a bush? Yes, that is stealth! It is a Sniper Weapon, so stand off from target is a veeery stealthy thing.:D Shagrat - Flying Sims since 1984 - Win 10 | i5 10600K@4.1GHz | 64GB | GeForce RTX 3090 - Asus VG34VQL1B | TrackIR5 | Simshaker & Jetseat | VPForce Rhino Base & VIRPIL T50 CM2 Stick on 200mm curved extension | VIRPIL T50 CM2 Throttle | VPC Rotor TCS Plus/Apache64 Grip | MFG Crosswind Rudder Pedals | WW Top Gun MIP | a hand made AHCP | 2x Elgato StreamDeck (Buttons galore)
Hamblue Posted May 8, 2013 Author Posted May 8, 2013 Yep that works, as long as TGP is set as SOI. When you press the fire button, the coordinates are taken from whatever is presently the Sensor of Interest (again, SOI) and passes that in to the bomb's GPS guidance. So in other words you can use a steerpoint/mark point from your CDU or the HUD Target Designation Cursor in addition to the TGP for telling the bomb where to go. Thanks to all who responded Now I have something new to play with. What kind of range do the bombs get from 20-25k? Asus Sabertooth P67 Motherboard 2600k CPU, 16 gig DDR3, 1600. It is a Sniper Weapon, so stand off from target is a veeery stealthy thing.:D But the gun itself is too heavy to be employed in the traditional sniper role. It's an anti-material rifle. Sure, vectoring in on a gun shot can be very hard from just a couple of hundred yards (when you're a couple hundred yards from the target perpendicular to the bullet flight path the snap of the bullet can be louder than the shot even if the shot is only a few hundred yards in range). But a sniper with a 30 pound gun (only - no optics no ammo no gear yet) probably won't be humping into the bush and out again with much efficiency! I'm not in the military so I could be completely wrong, but having carried a 15 pound gun a decent distance I doubt I'd want to double that weight! Luckily, in what appears to be the current battlefield that gun is used in there often isn't a need for stealth once you're engaging. http://www.youtube.com/user/311Gryphon i7-8700, 32 GB DDR4 3000, GTX 1080 TI 11GB, 240 GB SSD, 2TB HDD, Dual (sometimes Triple) monitor, TM Warthog HOTAS, Saitek Pro Combat Pedals, TrackIR [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Luckily, in what appears to be the current battlefield that gun is used in there often isn't a need for stealth once you're engaging. Usually the Sniper will get into position hours or even days before a supposed action. Sometimes a sniper team will go to lay up for days and carefully and stealthy move into position. For example a suspected insurgent hideout. The usual Bergen may weigh up to 90 pounds plus, without the gun, so if only two snipers in a 4-8 Kill team carry a Berret with 30 pounds and ammo etc. while their buddies carry most of the rest (food, water for several days, and so on), it is not so bad. They won't march for miles with that equipment of course, but a good insertion is key to a good and stealthy lay up and usually it will be done at night with helicopters if possible or by car, APC whatever. No way you carry 150 pounds kit through a heat of 40°C for miles. Now after observing the hideout and patrol patterns, enemy habits, identifying high value targets they will move into prepared positions to hit the targets, after you shot some few rounds you switch positions... it is part of a good preparation to plan these before shooting at people, now you may take another shot or two and if you run out of luck and the bad guys come searching the area it is time to pull the extraction plan, a quick and covered way to get out there quickly, back to the lay up and call for a ride home. The key is, I've been told, that you plan as best as possible before the insertion, adapt to what you really find (use the terrain), never rush things, observe and plan before going to shoot, and most of all have a plan C if plan B fails, after plan A was impossible to execute.:D Actually, most of the time you are simply waiting, watching, and waiting again for the right moment to act. leafer Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 (edited) Totally. And either he got stuff wrong at times or the producers/writers of the show did. That show was fun to watch but annoyed me to no end. A guy hosting a show like that should know the difference between a 7.62 X 39 and a 7.62 X 51 Isn't he ex navy seal? Edited May 9, 2013 by leafer ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
311Gryphon Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 This is all true but a 30 pound Barrett is hardly needed for killing insurgents below 1200 meters. http://www.youtube.com/user/311Gryphon i7-8700, 32 GB DDR4 3000, GTX 1080 TI 11GB, 240 GB SSD, 2TB HDD, Dual (sometimes Triple) monitor, TM Warthog HOTAS, Saitek Pro Combat Pedals, TrackIR [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
311Gryphon Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 I think so, yes. I have a feeling the producers of the show wanted to make the .50 BMG look as large as possible so they took the 7.62 X 39 and by virtue of the first number assumed it was the exact same diameter as a 7.62 X 51 (it's not) and thus called it a .308. It may not have been his fault that he got it wrong, but I personally think he should have known better and insisted on doing it right. Let's face it, a 12.7 X 99 is much longer than a 7.62 X 51 too. I should have quoted: This is in response to leafer, the previous was in response to shagrat.
