pacotito Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 75 on a prime isn't bad. My sandy hits low 80s. With the games I've played the mass effect games seem to give the highest temps low to mid 60s. Are you going to try a delid? Pacotito I7-5820k@4.5 Z99 extreme4 16gb ddr4 520gb ssd. Gigabyte ssc GTX960 SSC 4gb
HiJack Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 I''ve not tested much but my CPU is clocked to 4.2 and is at 25 degrees at idle. When logging the temp and running su-25t instant action the temp rises to 39 degrees. If you get a too hot CPU you must have applied to much termal paste creating a heat problem. My frames went up from the 20's to 120 with the same settings so the upgrade was a huge success. I will post more later. I just need my DCS licences fixed first ;)
HiJack Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 OK. Licenses fixed. Here are a shot taken just right after a flight in the F-15C (the only object added to the mission). As you can see the temp is fine! :D It may seam that I just got one fan but I got Antec 900-II cabinet with two 8" fans in front, one 8" fan at the back and a large 20" fan on top. That makes a realy good airflow. They are all set to the minimum speed and are silent. With the new Noctura NH-U14S cooler with one fan you can see it is happy swirling at 400rpm
porky_pig Posted June 10, 2013 Author Posted June 10, 2013 I upgraded to the haswell 4770k from an old i7 950 nahalem. My old one was 3.9ghZ and with no overclocking the new one beats the pants off it. I've upped my new cpu to about 4.3GHZ and it's a nice improvement over that. I don't think there's much need to overclock it though. People going from more recent CPU's might not see the need but its a great improvement for me. Oh I also got an ASUS Sabortooth MB with it =) Any chance your clock is not being set correctly? By clock, I mean the clock on the taskbar down on the right.

Im getting a new HSF after work today anyways, perhaps that will solve my potential heat problem. If it doesnt, Ill just buy me a water cooling kit.
HiJack Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 This is the best way to add thermal paste to the CPU. But this image have to much paste on! You only need about half of this amount on the Haswell (also comented in the article). Add a cross in about 1/3 of the CPU diagonal lenght. HiJack Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 (edited) Wouldn't it be easyer to apply it directly to the CPU? Anyway, what are your System Specs HiJack? Yes, add directly on the CPU. The picture is of the cooler but always apply to the CPU! Spec: Motherboard: ASUS Z87-PLUS, Socket-1150 CPU: Intel® Core i7-4770K Processor MEMORY: Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR3 2133MHz CL9 4x8GB DISK: Samsung SSD 840 PROSeries 256GB 2.5" OEM PSU: Corsair TX 850W PSU FAN COOLER: Noctua NH-U14S CPU Kjøler USB sound: Creative SB X-Fi Surround 5.1 PRO - USB 2.0, THX TruStudio PRO, Dolby Digital Live, PowerDVD, Remote Head set: ASUS Vulcan PRO Should go greate with my Sapphire 7970 :D EDIT: PS! I will return the ASUS Vulcan PRO as it does not give any sound at all. It also seals all other sound out and that was not my wish. If anyone knows of a decent headset that goes well with TrackClip Pro I'm open for sugestions. Edited June 10, 2013 by HiJack
159th_Falcon Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Nice system, pretty much what i am considering, but why so much memory? Won't say you will never use 32 GB, but it does seem a bit overkill? (or do you plan on installing DCS in the RAM or something?) Let us know how it handle's DCS if you will please. ~S~ and thank's for posting the specs. I hope the added memory will serve me well for a long time and maby have a impact on video editing. I have had the Sapphire HD7970 OC edition for some months and it did not do much to frames (10-15% maby) and I then realised its the CPU that was the problem. I have run on SSD's for several years and that also did some good regarding fps, espessialy when using FRAPS at fullscreen recording. After the last DCS patch my frames went down to 20-45 and sometimes when online it was all the way down at 5-8 when flying low. I will continue to test with current settings just to compare the old settings. My frames jumped over 100 straight away. It changes now from 60 to 130 when I fly out of Kutaisi in a F-15. I have mirriors and shadows on and water to low. I will most lightly mix my settings somethime this week but as always with a new system there may be HW bugs. I already updated BIOS as the memory showed 1333MHz, but now shows the correct 2133MHz. There was also some updates regading USB3. But I'm happy for now :) 1
SkateZilla Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 with 32 GB you can Make a pretty nice RamDrive to run some stuff better :) I also fill up my 16GB of Ram when video editing, Lots of effects and raw 1080p or 4K footage. 159th_Falcon Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Thanks for the explanation guys. Guess 16GB will be more then plenty for me then. Hardly ever do video editing, and when i do it are fairly short and small gopro clips. And that's a very impressive jump in fps, could you please post setting a bit more detailed? Any trees, grass, MSAA, heat blur, draw distance and quality setting? And what CPU did your previous system have? Hoping this will give me an idea of the performance gain i could get. (running an Phenom II here stock at 3.4Ghz and an 6950 2GB GPU) EDIT, Would it be useful to load DCS into a RAMdrive? besides loading time obviously [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] The keeper of all mathematical knowledge and the oracle of flight modeling.:)
HiJack Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 I upgraded from the AMD here to the Intel one  So I would expect to se at least twice the FPS I'm used to.
159th_Falcon Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Fair expectation. I'm running an even slower CPU though. So i guess that's good news. Kind off...... [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] The keeper of all mathematical knowledge and the oracle of flight modeling.:)

Other than that, even when I had a GTX570, I was getting close to 80-100fps with all the eye candy maxed out. I didnt see much of a change coming from that to a GTX680. But its nice to see when something finally works, doesnt it?! Im excited about the fact it made FSX seem so much better...

SkateZilla Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 pfff another one who hasn't tried SSD's. :) The Speed of a RAM DISK is greater than a SSD. Pilotasso Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 The Speed of a RAM DISK is greater than a SSD. sure, but you wont notice the difference for that particular application , and also, SDD's benefit all systems not just one application, and you don't have to spend time off loading stuff from HDD to RAMDISK eating the RAM away either. .

I will still prefer to spread it myself since the technique shown is really dependent on keeping the two surfaces perfectly parallel in order to spread the paste properly by pressure only. Also note that you really do not know where the paste ended up. Unless you lift the cooler, at which point I would be cleaning and applying new paste. HiJack Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 (edited) OK as my original testing against my previous settings shows a more or less constant 80 - 120 in FPS I've started to edit the settings. I still have 80-120FPS with these settings: (but the frames is steady at 60 when VSYNC is selected). Please note that I have full tre visibility and preload radius. The CPU temperature is still in the range of 25 - 39 degrees and the CPU is running at 4.2Ghz. HD7970 settings: DCW World settings: Edited June 11, 2013 by HiJack
159th_Falcon Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 Very impressed, the temp of the cpu though. Is that of the core that's doing the hard work or an overall temp? I'd be very happy to get 80+ FPS whit those kind of settings. Keep the results coming, wonder how far you can push it before fps start to get low. I picked up 3 noctua fans, cleaned the paste off of the heatsink and reapplied it, and it didnt even phase the temps.
159th_Falcon Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Porky_pig, can i assume you ment "change" instead of "phase" in your above post? If you did meant "phase" then could you explain what your talking about? Cause i have no idea of a changing temperature phase.
