9.JG27 DavidRed Posted September 30, 2013 Author Share Posted September 30, 2013 Voted P-47 free as there are far more fans of the Spitty and 109 than the T-bolt which equates to more actual sales. same reason for chosing this option as well...although i was almost about to vote for the "pay for all" option... but i think, although it hurts to give either of them away for free, in the end this will attract more players and purchasers of other planes... a trainer would maybe be enough to attract some new non-dcs hardcore flight simmers, but not as many as a fighter i guess....besides a trainer would have to be developed as well, and thats not worth the costs and development time at this stage at least i think... The P-47 isn't exactly an entry level aircraft, but it will allow people access to DCS WWII and tempt them to carry their own weight financially if they want the 'sexier' aircraft. Actually though, I think that the real barrier to the new user of flight simulators is the need for a twist-rudder joystick for the very minimum level entry. I started playing Red Baron 10-12 years ago with a 20 dollar USB stick and now I look around my seat here at my computer and I see well over 800 US dollars worth of gear dedicated to flight simming (not even counting the computer itself that I built with an eye mainly on flight sim enjoyment). That can be pretty intimidating to the person casually considering the purchase of a flight simulator who realizes quite quickly that the keyboard or the gamepad that came with his XBox isn't going to cut it. You want to get good controllers and be competitive? Then pedals and TrackIR are the next steps--at $150 US each. That is a steep curve upwards for someone in his teens or earning his own living at an entry level job (hell, it's close to three months' supply of decent beer). A young person who has to convince his parent(s) or choose between them and other less expensive entertainment options won't count the longterm value of goodies like that against the immediate costs the same way most of us might. I'm just sayin'...this is One Expensive "Hobby". By the way, the XBox360 I got my kids a few years back came with a pair of controllers. You can bet your ass there will be 10.000 people worldwide buying WWII modules that have WWII environment and ground units to go with. At 40$ per module that's 400.000$ you're giving away with a DCS level module. That money could pay for a B-17, a bigger map, better core features development. Others may see this differently. Also it's German and many will want to fly allied, which is good motivation to buy another module. That can never be. IL-2 sold 1 million copies. There are studies that show for every 1 posting member of an internet forum, there are 9-10 lurkers. There are a few thousand active members here, you can multiply that by 10 to get an approximation of people interested. And with this kind of fidelity you can count on all the proffesionals, and semi-professional aviators and aviation personnel. History buffs, aviation buffs... who wouldn't want to get into a study sim level WWII simulator, even if just for looking around and clicking a bunch of stuff :) If you combine those numbers you can easily come up with tens of thousands that would be interested. The only thing left to do is marketing, which would require some content to show. About the plane choice, a P-47 would probably be the least popular, therefore it would make the smallest dent in their revenue if it were free. Whether he uses it is his decision, and I think we all understand that. I voted Spit myself. I figure it is beneficial to at least have each of the first available aircraft from different countries of origin, not to mention the popularity of the Spitfire. Also, all things considered, I would guess it to be the easiest aircraft to just jump in and get going. It helps that the airframe is a very stable one regarding wing loading and such too. I love the Jug but I do think it will have a higher learning curve and thereby not the best "starter" aircraft for the release. Adding a trainer aircraft could also be a great way to ease people into the experience, like Mac recommended. This will make the difference on how many people we bring into the genre. Having that free plane is quite importnant just as SU-25T in DCSW. I've seen a lot of people justifying piracy or not playing some game because they "couldn't try it" while companies nowadays releasing demos less and less. I can imagine that free airplane is not so importnant for the guys who already pledged or know that they gonna spend hundreds of hours flying and paying anyway, but if this genre need some kick in the butt, i feel like it could be done with some free content. Guys who like airplanes but are too scared to try a simulator won't buy it when they don't know if they can handle it. They're better off in War Thunder. But with free airplane, they have nothing to lose and we have an argument to get some new folks into it.
