In the attached picture the SPO Beryoza of the Su-25T depicts the Roland search radar as a short range radar. Note that the radar in question is a standalone radar (the one with an extending arm)- not the Roland launchers mounted on the Marder chassis. Could this be a mistake? Why would anyone need another standalone short range radar if the Marder Roland launcher already has one. I would think that it should be at least a medium range radar, wouldn't it?

Well, that's what puzzles me. Why does a Roland battery need this thing, if the Roland launcher has its own radar which has a range of 20-25 km and having a second radar with a range increase of approximately one third is kind of excessive...

And another thing... EWR stands for early warning radar - and it's depiction on the Beryoza should be second from the right.

P.S. By the way, the dish of the Roland EWR is remarkably similar to the dish on top of the Roland launcher...

They use it because it can search much further than the Roland's own radar (if indeed the platform has such a radar - not all ROLAND batteries do, IIRC). It's also a command and control vehicle, so it can do a little more than just show blips on the screen.

The one with longer range is a search radar. It will get aware of inbound bandits long befor the launcher radar can. It distributes this situational awareness picture to connected launcher units to guide their attention to closing contacts. Then their tracking radars assume contact with the hostile target and serve the undertaking of a SAM-launch. Meanwhile the search radar continues to observe the overall situation, while the tracking radars concentrate on fighting single targets.

That is a recurrent problem, some legacy AAA/SAM DCS: W system need a complete rework on systems and perfomances. And add missing vehicles to complete combat formations.
