The GBU-31 became more sophisticated with the addition of new post-penetration checks. For hardened single-level targets like the Ammo Depot, remember: 180s is too long, 0s is too short, and 60s is the sweet spot in most every case.
Pro tip: drop two GBU-31s on tough, hardened targets to be sure you get the job done.

Added the ability to add subtitles to Radio Transmission trigger actions — now your in-mission radio calls can come through with on-screen captions for added immersion and clarity. Perfect for custom briefings, AI chatter, or player guidance.

The Halloween season is upon us — and military history has plenty of its own ghost stories!

The USS Lexington earned the nickname “The Blue Ghost” for her uncanny ability to return from the depths after the enemy swore she was sunk. Even today, there are whispers of strange happenings aboard...

The USS Enterprise was called “The Grey Ghost”, forever haunting Japanese reports as she reappeared on the front lines again and again, racking up victory after victory.

And now, carrying on that haunted naval tradition, beware the terrifying “Vulkan Ghost” — a phantom warship said to roam the stormy seas of our developers’ internal builds. Rumor has it it still stalks their dreams… especially when a certain daring CM threatens to show it to all of you!

Happy Halloween from Eagle Dynamics!

DCS Wags Interview October 2025:

📝 Summary of the Interview with Matt Wagner (Wags), Senior Producer at Eagle Dynamics

1. Career Start and Trajectory

  • Entry into Development: Started in flight simulation in the mid-1990s (94-95) as an external tester while still working at the CIA.

  • First Industry Job: His first job in the industry was at Jane's Combat Simulations (under Electronic Arts).

  • Connection with Eagle Dynamics (ED): He was a big fan of Flanker 1.5 and made initial contact with ED then. He joined ED after Jane's Combat Sims folded.

  • Philosophy: Disagrees with the saying "never make your hobby your work," as flight simulation has always been a massive part of his life and has worked out very well for him professionally.

2. Classic and Favorite Flight Simulators

  • First Sim: Believes it was Mig Alley Ace on the Apple II, followed by the original Jet on an early IBM PC.

  • Favorite Sims:

    • Falcon 3.0: He loved creating squadrons and assigning different skill sets to AI pilots—a feature he still wants in DCS.

    • Tornado (Digital Integration): Enjoyed the world's sense of continuity.

    • Longbow 2.

    • Flanker 1.5: Considered the most influential game on his professional career.

3. Wags' Role and Philosophy at ED

  • Official Title: Senior Producer.

  • Key Function: Acts as a "firewall" to ensure no classified or sensitive information makes it into the game, leveraging his background.

  • Proudest DCS Development: The scope of the product, building a "sandbox system" with a wide array of aircraft, time periods, and maps, which he believes is quite unique.

  • Outside Hobby: Plays the guitar; music has always been a big part of his life.

4. Module Development Criteria and Projects

  • Criteria for In-House Modules (Developed by ED):

    1. Profitability/Interest: Aircraft that will generate sufficient interest (niche aircraft where breaking even is hard are usually given to third parties).

    2. Available References: Having enough academic, technical, and demonstration resources to build the design (e.g., F-35 papers).

    3. Supporting Technology/Resources: Accounting for time and resources if brand-new technology is required.

  • Passion Projects (Less Revenue-Driven): The Mustang and the Yak 52.

  • Criteria for Third-Party Developers:

    1. Demonstrating Skill Set: Showing art skills (external model/cockpit) and coding capability (avionics systems).

    2. Avoiding Duplication: Being careful about new projects overlapping existing ones (e.g., F-15A).

    3. Professionalism and History: Their history of quality, product support, and customer interaction.

  • Rejection Rate: Approximately 50% of third-party proposals are rejected.

5. Future DCS World Improvements

  • Dynamic Campaign (DC): It is the most anticipated and "long overdue" feature. Current work focuses heavily on AI and the necessary UI systems. They hope to have something internal to review by the end of this year. They also want to integrate Squadron Management into the DC.

  • Air Traffic Control (ATC): A completely new system is under development, including:

    • A whole new UI akin to what was developed for the Hind and Apache.

    • Looking at AI systems to record voice files and create comm lines (voiceovers).

  • Data Transfer Cartridge (DTC): The next big push for the Hornet and Viper is the navigation database and the different properties that can be assigned to each nav point.

  • AR/VR: Much of the AR work seen in the game is ported from ED's professional side (military/pro simulators), which benefits the entertainment side.

  • Wags' Wishlist Aircraft: A Super Cobra and the Grippen.

6. Community and Mods

  • Standout Mods: He is very impressed with the community-made T-45 and A-4 modules.

  • Scripting: Praises the work of scripting guys, particularly for multiplayer servers (Moose, Mist).

  • Mod-to-Module Success: Points to the free version of the C-130 as a good example of a talented third party that started as a mod and is now expanding into a full aircraft.

We’ve resolved an issue where explosion and smoke effects rendered on cockpit displays (MFD/FLIR/TGP pages) could produce incorrect black texture artifacts. You should now see clean, artifact-free explosive effects through all onboard sensors — especially noticeable during FLIR tracking, CCRP/CCIP BDA checks, and high-contrast night ops.

Do you enjoy technical documents and deep discussions of the inner workings of aircraft systems? Check out our latest post discussing the SPO-15LM synchronization systems. The SPO15LM has two different synchronization systems: a blocking system and a blanking system. Read about them here and how they affect the functionality of this device in the DCS: MiG-29A Fulcrum!

The AH-64D got a big boost in the last major update! The “Consent to Fire” command is now “Multifunctional Input (Center)”, added to both Pilot and CPG controls. A new AI Subtitles toggle lets you control George’s captions (global subtitle settings still override), and his speech volume now correctly follows the intercom MASTER knob. The AI Pilot is smarter than ever with a cleaner UI, a new Helper menu, updated DEFN mode access, and major logic upgrades—better power management, torque and rotor protection, improved trim handling, and automatic nose alignment with TADS or other cues. Speed and altitude tools also expanded with GS/TAS and radar/baro toggles plus new speed presets. You’ll also find a new GND mode for startup/shutdown flow, new exterior lighting options, and fixes for TSD PAN to POINT, BAM MPD state syncing, and RF missile target retention.
