On single player missions the wingmen seem to immediately know where everything is. I've been playing "defend Yankee base" and I can just tell the wingman to engage air defenses and he will have taken them all out with mavericks as soon as thev've gotten within range.

Huh. My wingmen prefer to perform SEAD by eating every 23mm bullet and Igla missile the enemy has in the AO while I look for targets from Angels 20.

Engaging a group of targets takes many times the time and weapons with AI wingmen compared to human controlled aircraft. If they're actually good at something, I really wouldn't call it cheating to let them do their job. :D

I use wingmen when I just want a "Quickey." If I have time I put them on SEAD call JTAC and steal all of the glory for myself. Put myself in for a few "Leather Medals." afterwards.

If you think this is bad, just wait to see how fast people will be taking out SAM's when DCS: F/A-18C comes out.

If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.

I think using the wingman is just fine and adds up a little to the realism. In the end it is all about getting the mission done in a most efficient way. To me that includes using all of your resources - including your wingman.

In the game however, the wingman is AI and if you don´t use it right he will die quickly. So i rather use the wingman for the easier jobs and leave the heavier stuff to me.

Attacking more challenging targets by yourself is more rewarding and you don´t run our of ammo so quickly.

Plus: Your Wingman is so much more effective when attacking infantry!!!! :D

Do you guys try to fly using RL tactics? Eg do you "provide cover" when you order your wingy to attack?

I find most of the time they'll get themselves shot down even when working with JTAC... That or I haven't scouted the area properly.

Btw, why is it that they fly off into the far distance when I tell them to attack my SPI? Sometimes they'll even "RTB". I'll then have to tell them to rejoin and then attack, and it works! Bug or am I doing something wrong?

Last question: when you give them an attack heading eg default, north, east etc, is that the compass bearing relative to the target as per the TPG?

What am I, their mother? :D

But seriously, I've never tried that with AI wingmen. What would I do anyways if I see AAA or MANPADs shot at them? I could give some very basic orders, but chances are they'll know about the threat before I've reached the Mic switch and they'll get themselves killed regardless.

Definitely a bug.

I read once that your chances are better if you order them to attack while you yourself are not too far from the target. Should be less than 10km IIRC, possibly even less. But I'm not up to date whether that still works or whether this type of behavior has been corrected in 1.2.7. I flew "Hideout" a few days ago and my wingy did a pretty good job, but that may just have been a series of lucky incidents. :music_whistling:

That's the ingress heading towards the target (as in: compass heading) and has nothing to do with the TGP.

Doesn't matter so much in DCS, but in the real world, it's always nice to drop bombs so that the blast isn't directed towards friendlies or civilians. :)
