Civilian flight sims as good as DCS is for combat?

I have been trying out XPlane but it feels (and looks) very retro compared to DCS. I am now looking for another flight sim for civilian missions, with a focus as good as DCS is on combat. I used to play Flight Unlimited 2, and it had very fun and challenging missions, but doesn't hold it's weight to DCS's AFMs. Something 21st century basically :)

I would have to say that without buying very good third party add-ons, for either P3D, FSX or Xplane, you are unlikely to find anything with an FM that approaches DCS. Those options will get you close but...

Buy the PMDG 737 (+ FS2Crew) or the PMDG 777, or the A2A AccuSim C172. Add in ActiveSky Next, PFPX+Topcat, MyTraffic 2013, and Ground Services X. Sign up for PilotEdge. Now you've got a world class civilian sim.

There's not really a whole lot to choose from. But if you like just flying around and doing aerobatics, maybe Aerofly FS is worth a look, it's far from the DCS standard, but so is FSX, P3D and X-Plane when it comes to aerobatics.

Buy yourself Orbx and Rex they are a must for FSX.

I suppose I will try out FSX, it seems to be almost the same as P3D, flight model wise, unless I missed something. P3D looks cool for the mission possibilities. Does FSX have the same large scale world as P3D?

P3D is based on FSX source codes, which are tweaked in 2.0 version new functionalities are introduced, so basically P3D comes from FSX.

 

If you look for great FLIGHT MODEL (accurate spins, rolls, stalls, speed stalls, gravity center influence etc.) to do aerobatics don't bother with FSX. It has lots of limitations, it's just... old. It's better to buy DCS P51, although it is of course not aerobatic plane, but flight model is great.

Since you already have X-Plane 10 you should try SkyMaxx Pro. It gives X-Plane a much warmer feel and provides very realistic clouds.You can get it and some very nice payware aircraft here....

I use Xplane quite frequently. I do enjoy it for the most part but you are right in many points and I have been raked over the coals on many occasion by their old timers in their forums about such things.

Xplane is a little on the cartoony or arcade side. And for the memory that it takes up and the video power it takes to run it, you really don't get as much as you seem to with DCS in many ways. I have the P-51 by Heinze in Xplane. It is payware so it is suppose to be top of the line. But after being in the DCS P-51, I really had a hard time going back to Xplane's lack of detail and scenery that cuts in and out, bogs down my memory like crazy, and looks more cartoon than real. And it really isn't all that extravagant having airports and scenery all over the planet if most of the scenery only vaguely resembles the real scenery in those places. But Xplane tries to pay more attention to the flight dynamics because they are claiming to be a simulator that can train pilots. And again....I am at odds with it because the P-51 in Xplane and the DCS P-51 are like day and night so far as dynamics goes. One of them has to be right and one wrong because they're so far apart that you cannot even compare the two.

I have other payware aircraft that I feel probably do come close to their real world counterparts but there are lots of bugs with Xplane as a whole so it only serves to take away from the detail.

I enjoy Xplane and I am coming to really enjoy DCS. They both have their drawbacks. But DCS beats Xpane hands down on the modeling front.

As far as another sim that will give you civilian planes that handle as good as DCS does......They're all so friggin different that I think it is a matter of preference really.

There are some very good missions in FSX acceleration for the extra 300s and other aerobatic aircraft including the redbull contests which are fun in both SP and MP.:thumbup:
