Hi all!

I have been experimenting with pushing the Mustang as hard as I can, and have come across something strange.

Usually when I use WEP (Or even just high MP) I'll kill the engine pretty quickly, sometimes within a minute.

However I was flying today and managed to fly with WEP at max throttle + max RPM giving a constant 75 MP. I flew like this for more than 20 minutes without any temps getting into the red.

The only thing I changed was forcing the supercharger on while at low altitude, which for some reason brought my temps under control.

Is this how a P-51 would perform or have I broken the system?

Most documentation says not to run with WEP for more than 5 minutes to avoid engine damage. There have been discussions on here about it and I once experimented with it and posted the results in the link below. Not sure about how the S/C settings influence it as I didn't try that.

You're airspeed was probably high. Try using WEP for the same amount of time in a steep climb and it will last nowhere near as long.

Who ever said that it should fail after 5 minutes. Of course you need to set a limit that gives a considerable margin for the plane to still be combat worthy after the use of WEP. You would still want the engine to be able to deal with full military and make it home after using WEP.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

^^and thats the thing which seems for me to be still something to improve....

i am all for "punishment" if you just go on with WEP all day long...BUT

i am able to fly pretty much all day long with WEP enabled without any sign of damage(neither audible nor visible)

though it feels, that once WEP enabled, the engine begins to behave weird...

-less power than others which are actually flying with only 61"mp even when temps are in the healthy range

-no reliability at all anymore...even when using WEP for only very short periods, engine failures do occur very often, independent from engine temps...using it only for one or two minutes, and then throttling back to 61mp, engine temps in green operating range, and yet, suddenly, bang, engine gone and all out of a sudden the coolant temp is at its max...no warning signs whatsoever...

-especially when using WEP for short period and then reducing power to 61mp it seems, that you lose energy against others who fly with 61 without having wep enabled...

having said that, im not saying that its bugged...but there is definitely a lack of documentation for us virutal pilots...

i think the devs or yo-yo the daddy himself could give us some acutal "virtual pilot notes" on how to use his baby effectively and reliable...

there is so much talking going on, about how to treat the engine best within the community,...assumptions, trial and error, and even veterans are switching methods every view weeks because they think that they now finally have found the solution....honestly, and i think thats something most if not all serious flight sims are missing, and the more detailed, the more important it is, would be to have some flying manual about the planes...not the manual we have right now, but actual something which reveals the mysteries...

for example how is the engine programmed, after which treatment will the engine stop working?is there a time limit, is it the temps?both....what are the programmed limits?

in such a detailed and complex simulation, thats something very important for the users i think, as then they can focuse on the actual thing for which this simulation is all about....flying!!!and not trying for months and even years to find the best engine or flap settings, wep or not wep and so on....

its so complex, that even if the users know all those programmed secrets, it will still be a challenge to master it,...but at least if something got wrong, than you know what the mistake was...

honestly, lots of frustration would be gone...
