FSX is slowly dying out.

But there is still one major reason that always brings me back to it.

First the option of downloading real weather data in a 15 min update cycle. Here I wonder, if it's possible for DCS as long as they're still working on the 1.2.7 to add this wonderful feature!

Second, I tried some weather Mod, but it still can't top not even close the FSX Add-On like the Zinertek World Environment 2012, REX, Active Sky or Opus Live Weather; they made the sky come alive! If there is one, pls notify. When you think that in civil flights you spend 77% of your time looking into the sky, then it's reasonable to express the need of asking: if DCS is not planning of boosting the clouds any further, can it then open the doors for third party software to take over that job? I know such a weather engine would suck out the CPU's juice, but in that case, maybe it can be executed as a new option for a "civil" environment, where the war machine engine is set to Off, to compensate the need of the other one.

There is nothing as beautiful as surfing wavy clouds with a P-51, where the sky beneath, is calling you to dive in...

Thanks

OP.. Thank you for popping this.. For FSX weather, the best addon with live updates is Opus Live Weather. I can't stress the beauty of the skies with it.

On a side note though, FSX weather update is no longer active. You are downloading old weather for an old year in the same day. Pittiful that Microsoft discharged ACES studio and killed FSX..

The other day I was watching Alan Partridge and as they took over, it reminded me of FSX.. :)

So we're kind of stuck now in a time tunnel, looping us exactly to the same day 2013? I didn't know that!

Maybe the Borgs* took over, and are rewinding us for assimilation, so that their Agents who took over the Feds in 1913 were supposed to admin the NWO in exactly 100 after! Resistance is futile :music_whistling:

As far as I can see, what were up against are Ancient Engine issues. Its no longer CPUs and GPUs that are stopping us, its these old engines that DCS, Arma, and a couple of other sims are still using. Without being able to use all the CPU cores, and unloading everything possible to the GPUs, were being bottle necked. I very much want to see what EDGE is going to bring to the table. Until then, we can say we want, we want, we want, but the old engine just can't push it. It can't utilize all the modern hardware.

You're right about that, even though the context of FSX was created at a time when CPU multi-cores and virtual cores where still in labour, some third party softwares like FSPS managed with "Xtrem FSX Booster V2" to re-admin the cores, so that for eg I can assign 3 CPU threads extra for terrain and the fourth takes over the performance exclusively. Those are really good instruments. But even with the best operative instruments, the surgeon can kill his patient if he cuts too deep. Some Ad-Hoc changes were implemented into the two FSX service packs with regards how things work, so why all this shouldn't be possible for a newer engine generation like DCS that is already using DirectX 11?

Were not using dx 11, yet. Supposedly, EDGE will bring dx 11 into play. Right now, I would say the biggest bottleneck is dx9, because it is limited to about 500 draw calls / sec. Dx 11 has a lot better organization, allowing more draw calls. I don't know if EDGE will allow multi-cpu scaling or not, but I think that is a HUGE thing that needs to be implemented. Computers can have up to 16 cores these days if you use a server motherboard. Even some "normal" computers have 6 to 8 cores.

I second this motion.

We need a more realistic sky, I share the OP's opinion it would definitely bring way more enjoyment to the mix than any other possible new feature.

And going faster and faster each day... If DCS does not keep pace with the technical evolution, it's going to be too late one day to catch up in time with the digital "Zeitgeist".

Not having implemented DX-11 yet is like still being stuck in Middle age.

...Wait for how long?

You still need a Source Code "Transit Visa" from DCS to make such an Add-On accessable.

Besides, I wouldn't advise to grant a privat Add-On like this to any Trusted Zone in my Firewall. A Weather update means, every time you activate DCS, this Add-On has automatically access through internet to your system and can download beside the weather some other unwelcomed stormy nightmares! It should have a DCS certification signature.
