I don't think it's so much a difference between the two branches, but the difference within different types of units in the Army itself. I served for 6 years in an AH-64A battalion, the first two with the 2nd Armored Division (and attached to the 1st Cavalry Division during Ops. Desert Shield/Storm) and 4 years with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). In the 2AD and 1CD, attack helicopters were generally regarded as a maneuver element on their own, which is incredibly obvious if you read FM 1-112, Attack Helicopter Operations, which blatantly states as the role of the Attack Helicopter Battalion: Nowhere in there does it say that the Attack Helicopter battalion's job is to support other ground forces. This is because the Army viewed attack helicopters as their own maneuver element, just like tanks or even infantry...the main difference being their speed. Fast forward to the 101st. In the 101st, deep operations were still there, but the emphasis was clearly on support of the ground elements. Things like reconnaissance, LZ preparation, armed escort, and close air support were what we trained for almost exclusively, and we worked very closely with our ground counterparts. In the 2AD and 1CD, missions were almost always at the company level or higher. In other words, we would launch all 6 of our Apaches for a mission (Apache companies nowadays have 8 Apaches). In the 101st, we would routinely only launch two aircraft at a time to perform missions.2 points

To turn chatter on just switch the squelch toggle on the R-800 radio panel. This gives you about 10 minutes of random radio chatter taken from YouTube Apache cockpit radio clips (Sounds/Effects/replace static.ogg with the new one). http://rapidshare.de/files/46420262/radio_chatter.rar.html1 point

As the list of keys that took 9 sheets (both sides), I created the list, on a single sheet, on one side only. They are all keys, except Views, Cheats, General and Labels, which keys are unimportant. Anything that controls the Ka50 is included. The very small size of the letter was necessary, but as a quick reference, not something to consult often do not bother. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=E6OL070E1 point

I made a MS PowerPoint slide with the aircraft shapes of some of the Lock-On aircraft. Those shapes were all drawn to appr. the same scale, are available in 8 positions shown (each rotated by 45°) and can be used for tutorials, briefings etc. Made with MS PPT 2000. Hello to all, I was recently reading a post on this forum bemoaning the KA-50's lack of a Radar Warning Receiver and just had to chime with some information on the differences in deployment of attack helicopter between east and west. The idea of using attack helicopters in a deep strike role is really an American invention pioneered in the 1980s and brought to culmination during the first gulf war. In a famous attack Apaches attacked two radar sites and opened up an air corridor for the subsequent air war in Iraq. This is a prime example of how US helicopters are employed, though of course they are not pigeon holed into such a specific method. The fact remains that the US Army views helicopter aviation primarily as giving the commander the ability to affect the battlespace behind the front lines. Russian helicopter aviation however more closely resembles the usage of attack helicopters by the United States Marine Corps in that they perform the role of close air support of troops near the forward edge of battle area and much less on striking units behind enemy lines. This is as much a doctrinal difference as it is natural progression of tactics since the second world war. Russian aviation has always been a product of tactics used in WWII where aircraft were utilized in a support role to troops on the ground, whereas American airpower has been heavily influenced by the strategic bombing campaign. Of course the changing face of combat in the past decade is heavily influencing tactics on both sides, the basic ideas reflect an institutional difference how each side aproaches the same battlefield. Of course, thats just my 2 cents.1 point

Did you try installing the Canadian Skins and then the Slovak Skin? The Slovak skin uses a custom db_countries file which would overwrite the game one, and the Canadian Skins would not work. Also, which version of MODMAN are you using? It need to be 7.1 or later for the Canadian Skins to work. If you uninstall the Slovak Skin, then install the Canadian Skins they should be selectable as a Russian skins in the ME. The issue with the Slovak skin is the only way to add a KA-50 to another country (that wouldn't normally have it) is to use a custom db_countries file, which ruins all other skins which use the normal one. I'm not sure, you might be able to install the Slovak skin first, then the Canadian skins after.1 point

To my knowledge, what was available thriough link-16 upto now was for SA: thanks to the datalinked info from other aircraft, hostile contacts are displayed on the HSD even when they are not detected by your own radar, e.g. targets that slip outside the radar cone. But then, you had to lock them up and direct your radar energy towards them to be able to launch and guide a missile. In this trial, this seems no longer needed. Whether you still need to catch radar echoes from friendly aircraft or whether itis done completely by feeding datalinked info to the missile through midcourse updates is not clear to me.1 point

+1 Rep to everybody for this interesting discussion. It fascinates me is that we are having this discussion as a spin-off from a simulator. I think it speaks volumes of the quality of DCS Black Shark. Without doubt, attack helicopter doctrines and tactics among the major military superpowers are in a state of constant flux. Studying, revising and ultimately changing military doctrine is supposed to happen through all combat arms, just take a look at the US Cavalry during the last war in Iraq. But when it comes to attack helicopters it is more evident. And then, the even more fertile ground of ideas for helicopter vs helicopter combat ... Take a look at this article: Air Defense with an Attitude: Helicopter vs. Helicopter Combat (once you get to the link, click into the proxy URL and it will download a pdf document) That article is not new, but yeah has some nice info on the use of the Ka-50 in the anti-air role. Enjoy.1 point

md5 is a checksum, generated by a standard for a specific file. if the checksum of your downloaded is not the same as the checksum of the original file on the server, the file is "damaged". this happens mostly with large downloads, and/or if the connection or line quality is bad or unstable. you can try a different method to download the files, by using a download manager. (google for "free download manager"). a downloadmanager usually keeps track of all the single small parts of a file, and is even capable to re-start a broken/stopped download. by the way, be happy with one hour :). at release-day, i waited 8 hours... and then the file was broken too :(. for gods sake, a friend hosted the files then and i could dowload it in 40 mins...1 point

Your right this topic has swerved slightly askew of what I originally intended. As to the development cycle of the KA-50, from what I can gleam from online sources was basically a development of attack helicopters with the idea of replacing the venerable HIND, much like the MI-28 HAVOK. Unlike the HAVOK however, the Black Shark appears to be a victim of it's only uniqueness and economic circumstances otherwise today it would probably be seen in much greater numbers. Just look at the RAH-66 project on the American side and you can see what may have happened to the Apache if it's development cycle had taken it through the mid 90s instead of the 80s. Now specifically on the subject of a RWR I think it's very likely that it would not have been included on production Black Sharks, despite being tested. I feel that American designs differ due to design philosophy, as untill recently the Apache was viewed as a deep strike option to open up the battle space to higher commands, where as from what I understand of Russian operations, and it is not a great understanding, but as I understand it they operate thier helicopters less as a penetration weapon and more of a direct manuever/fire support option employed in support of ground units. I can speak directly to the lack of emphasis in the US Army of helicopters as a close support option. In 4 years of service with the Marines I participated in 4 seperate training missions involving helicopters in a live fire enviornment. In 5 years of service with the Army, including 2 years on active duty during deployments I have yet to ever have, train with, or at the very least include in planning operations the possiblity of helicopter support. That isn't to say it is not done at all. It just isn't emphasized the same in the two branches. You do pose a very good point on the inclusion of a FAC with the Black Shark. I have been reading that the KA-52 Edrogan, sorry if that is misspelled, is being pitched as a recon element to the KA-50 attack element. Many countries have employed this methodology in thier operations and it is an interesting operational concept but I am not sure if it is one accurate, or two could be modeled successfully with the campaign software. Correct me if I am wrong but only the aircraft in your own flight can data-link information to you correct? I think in reality the data-link system is capable of recieving information from many sources, including those outside of your flight. Much like the American FBCB2 or blue force tracker. If this is true a KA-52 or other recon element with supperior optics and a smaller work load could download data to the Black Shark attack element and this may be what is envisioned for the future. As for the improvements in NATO MBT armor, in the end history always proves out that the weapon beats out armor. It is true that the chobbam armor on NATO tanks is considered by many to be nigh invulnerable to enemy fire, but I can assure however that the insurgents have found ways to defeat even that, and with far less resources than are available to a nation state. Even the humble Vikhr, which I have been told by armor officers could never ever penetrate the front armor on an Abrams, can still score kills by hitting the top, or rear armor. In warfare if 75 percent of your armor becomes a mobility kill on the battlefield you have still lost 75 percent of your mobile firepower and are no longer to affect the battlefield outside of your current position. And I think your are correct, the simple expedient of modifying the Vikhr for top attack, or even applying the lessons learned to a new weapon would probably see the KA-50 with the ability to destroy all Nato armor.1 point

I would not recomend going for i7 CPU's because in my point of view they are not good value for money... the i7 920 is actually alright but the 940 and 965...forget about it... you'd rather overclock the 920 and get same thing :music_whistling: and then again the DDR3 memonry is lot more expensive compared to DDR2. Anywho, I'm gonna quote this and say: with E8500 overclocked to 4GHz and 2x HD4870 in CF (I don't recomend CF setup though as they can give lot of trouble and they are also not good value for money) I used to get 19700 points in 3D Mark 06... my point being, the CPU/MB/VGA combo I have is cheaper then i7 920 etc... and does very much the same thing... Right now (after I sold one HD4870 card) I'm runing E8500 @ 3.8Ghz and have 4GB of DDR2 and sinle HD4870. In LockOn and BS it does very nicely as well and I don't get bellow 20fps even in high scenery enabled and mirrors... so unless you want the best and have money and want to updgrade again soon, I'd stay with E8XXX series CPU's.1 point

I would say a good way to learn the Mission Editor (ME) is to fly a mission, then afterwards - open it in the ME and look at it to see how the mission designer made it work. Look at the aircraft, vehicles, ships that were used and the routes they followed. Look at the time of day, weather, wind, visibility distence settings he used. Many folks set up a cloudless sky at 12:00 in the summer. The more interestingly designed missions give you a beautiful sunrise or a stormy night. Look at the fuel loads and weapon loadouts and skins for the player unit and the AI. Look at the mission goals. Not every mission is go out and kill something. You can set up defensive missions where the goal is to ensure a friendly unit or base survives by stopping the bad guys. But here is some helpful info and links about the ME that Ive collected over time. Intro Level http://www.xs4all.nl/~nees64/flightsim/missioneditor.htm More complex http://home.hccnet.nl/hmms.janssen/Tutorial_complex_mission.html IRONHAND VIDEO of how to use the Mission Editor http://www.flankertraining.com/ironhand/flightbasics.htm and scroll down to VIDEO :: Getting Started Part 1: The GUI and Mission Editor VIDEO :: Getting Started Part 2: The Mission The Quick Start manual from page 48 onwards has some basic ME details. If you have Flaming Cliffs then this manual is in your Lockon/docs folder. If you only have vanilla Lockon (v1.02) then IronHand has it on his site for you to download, link below,,,, http://flankertraining.com/Hold/LO_FC_Quick_Start_Manual_1.1.zip This post had some useful info in it... http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=12608 Later pages of this thread (link below) had some useful stuff too http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/38610606/m/7221059326 I just put down some thoughts of things that may trip you up in the future, not in any particular order. Assigning unit(s) / group(s) / building(s) as targets using the TARGET button from ATTACK waypoints is what ensures the diamond appears in your HUD. Incidentally this is the mechanism by which AI units are assigned specific targets to attack. But the SUCCESS / FAIL at the end of a mission is caused by having set MISSION GOALS using the icon on the left of the screen that looks like a sniper sight. Having these as seperate actions means that a mission can have SUCCESS/FAIL goals set without necessarily having targets diamond'ed. Two examples - mbot's UrbanThunder which has an attack waypoint, but no TARGETs assigned http://forum.lockon.ru/showthread.php?t=9039 also my Smerch Hunt mission, which has no attack waypoint at all... http://www.lockonfiles.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownloaddetails&cid=61&lid=36&ttitle=A-10_Smerch_Hunt#dldetails Be aware that if you set up some vehicles or ships in a group then the Mission Editor treats that group as a single item when you use TARGET button. Once you target it and then try to target another item in the group the mission editor will latch to nearest thing (usually a building) leaving you wondering what is going on. I still get caught out by this with ships as a group of them by default are quite spread out and they dont look like a group. I then try to target a second time and it targets a building a 100kms away! When you have a group targeted then if you kill the 1st in the group, the diamond will move to the next in the group etc until all destroyed then moves to next TARGET'ed unit/group Set SKILL to PLAYER for your own aircraft (you can only fly the yellow aircraft names) If you want wingmen, add more pilots (not more flights) If the mission designer has set up an ATTACK waypoint and used the TARGET button to mark particular target(s), then you will see the diamond as soon as you change to a2g mode (7). If the target is out of the field of view of the HUD it will have an X through it. If you kill the target and there are multiple targets are set up, the diamond moves to the next target, and finally dissapears when you have killed all the marked targets. Some mission designers might only mark some or none of the targets you need to kill to get mission success, other targets may only be mentioned in the mission briefing. If there are multiple targets in a mission, you can swap the diamond between them by pressing ' key (depends on your keyboard - anyway it is the same key that swaps airfields when you are in nav return mode). Problems with other aircraft not taking off from your airbase? If you have more than one GROUP assigned to an airfield then the 2nd GROUP won't appear until all of the 1st GROUP have taken off and cleared the immediate vicinity of the airfield. The way round this is to make sure you are all in the same GROUP. Make the AI jets be one FLIGHT and you in the other FLIGHT. Of course you will share the same waypoints, make sure you are set to takeoff from parking area. Even though you share the same waypoints (of course you yourself don't actually have to follow them), you can be allocated different TASKS and even assigned different TARGET's from ATTACK waypoints. Alternatively, there are some bases very close to others, so you can have AI taking off (or landing) from a neighbouring base. For atmosphere, maybe have a friendly helo landing at your base as you taxi to the runway, have a couple of fuel trucks wandering around the base. Look for missions by a guy in the community called MBot, he is pretty good at adding atmosphere to an airfield with a few well placed static objects and moving AI vehicles / helo's / planes. Run the start of his missions to see how they look, then open them in the Mission Editor and see how he did it. Mbot mission pack link A problem you might find with certain airbases is that your aircraft will start in one part of the base, the AI might be clear across on the other side of the base. It depends on the base, the size of the aircraft - small AI jets will start from a HAS (hardened aircraft shelter) if there are any on the base. Also on some bases, the taxi time from the starting position (HAS or parking spot) to the runway can be a long time, the AI taxi at a fixed speed that you cannot alter. The taxi time can vary from a couple of minutes to over ten minutes  I made an investigation into this - Taxi time link By placing static object aircraft to occupy parking spots, it is possible to amend which spots you/AI start on. If you want some arty to bombard a town/airfield to add colour to a mission, 1) target a co-ord, so arty keep firing. If you target a building, once destroyed then the arty stops firing. 2) if your arty is all in one group, then have same number of targets to ensure each arty in the group has a target to fire at. 3) if you mix the arty types (bereg, msta, nona, etc) then they fire at different rates and looks nicer1 point

I have been pounding the "tubes" trying to get a line on reliable information concerning the employment of russian attack helicopters. Specifically their tactics and methodology. Sadly no luck. But I did find an interesting note on wikipedia under the attack helicopter entry. Granted wikipedia is not the most learned of sources. It matches nicely with what we have been talking about. " Lessons learned about limitations of independent attack helicopters On March 24, 2003, US V Corps launched a raid, by 32 Apache helicopters, against Medina Division armor in Karbala, with an attack plan that would fly through the Karbala area. "Army officials now believe that the aviation assembly areas the Army established in the Iraqi desert had been under surveillance by enemy observers, who noticed battle preparations on the night of the 24th." The corps commander told reporters that post-strike analysis revealed that the Iraqi observers had alerted the defense using cellular telephones.[7][3] As they approached, the power grid in Karbala was shut off, and the night went dark. The Apaches were taken under heavy antiaircraft fire. One was shot down (with the crew captured by Iraqi forces. They were later recovered by US forces), and enough of the others were damaged such that the raid was aborted. Two days later, the Army again used Apaches to carry out another nighttime deep attack. Tactics used, however, were quite different than those on March 24.[4] The damage done, "The results of the attack were respectable, if not spectacular: seven Iraqi air defense guns destroyed, along with three artillery systems, five radars, and 25 vehicles or other weapons systems. Not one Apache was shot down. Shortly afterward, the 3rd Infantry Division slashed through the Medina on its way toward Baghdad."[7] On March 26, other systems supported the attack, beginning with a four-minute artillery bombardment to distract the gunners. As the helicopters moved through the Najaf area, the lights again went off, and the intensity of antiaircraft fire increased as they approached the target. Two different things were done. "The Apaches fired back on the move—rather than using the Army’s typical tactic of hovering over the battlefield. That made them harder to hit from the ground but reduced their accuracy." Also, fixed-wing fighters protected the Apaches' flanks and suppressed more air defense. As the helicopters moved in, they radioed the locations of air defense targets to the fighters.[7] The March 24 raid is still being analyzed, with Air Force officers suggesting that the AH-64 alone is simply not effective for deep attack without support from conventional aircraft. Other analysts think this mission was poorly planned and the Iraqis had good intelligence on their route of attack. Nevertheless, the Apache mission generally changed from deep attack to direct support of troops. One of the most important lessons learned about the abortive raid on Iraqi tanks in Karbala, Iraq, was that the AH-64 is resilient enough to function effectively even when damaged. It was also made clear, however, that attack helicopters, without coordinated SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defense), cannot penetrate an alerted defense."1 point

are you really sure you forwarded the right ports to the right IP and activated the rule as well? it's no offense, but sometimes i tend to overlook some small option or whatever, and in the end it just doesn't work properly and i believe it must be an error because i "did everything right" :) the described problem is EXACTLY what happens when: - the ports are not forwarded properly - or the port is set wrong by blackshark (known "bug") usually, one can connect to different servers, but others can not connect to his server when the portforwarding is not working properly... 1. check router settings/portforwarding. my own router has different options where i can "route" ports to IPs, but only 1 is really the portforwarding, the rest is some firewall-stuff i didn't get yet. but the screens looks the same... 2. if set correctly, try it when all (ALL!) the antivirus + firewall softwares are completely turned OFF (including the MS ones). 3. if another one still can't connect to your server (or vice versa), try to enter the port manually. connect directly, not by the serverlist. instead of "111.111.11.111", try "111.111.11.111:10308". <- this solved the problem for my server, by doing this my friends could finally connect. 4. if you tried it WITH the port added, try it this time without - some ppl stated, that they could NOT connect when adding the port, but without it went just fine... other than that, i have no idea...1 point

3dmark is a synthetic benchmark, it doesn't tell you all that much about specific performance in a given game. This article does: http://techreport.com/articles.x/15818 Performance in most of those games you can see is rediculously low for the dollar. The i7 can beat the E8600 used in the test, but the margins are small until you go to either synthetic tests or stuff like 3D modeling and suchlike. So sure, you can beat an E8600 if you buy yourself an i7 965 Extreme and disable hyperthreading. Worth the money? Hell no. And since the guy said he was going to use it mainly for LockOn and DCS, there is absolutely no point in the i7's compared to Core2's. The price point on the Core2's is way below the i7 by wide margins, and neither DCS nor LockOn will be using the benefits of hyperthreading or extra cores for the foreseeable future. (They're doing 64-bit first.) So if it was a general system for varied applications that will also do DCS and Lockon, then the i7 might be a good investment. But if the only objective of it is to play DCS and Lockon, there is no point other than specifically getting a socket1366 system for future processor upgrades. EDIT: I see you're a fellow overclocker though, and you running that 920 at 3.9GHz does go a bit of the way to explain good performance. :P So if the OP is also open to overclocking the system then sure, the system as listed by you would be a good purchase. But it would be a good purchase for shooters, 3d rendering and such tasks. For Lockon and DCS? No point, it'll at best give you a few FPS extra, which the price diff just isn't worth. The system as listed in my sig will play DCS consistently at ~30fps and up - most of the time sitting at the 60 due to my V-sync but on occassional really massive maps it'll be at 30 over the action with Skhval on. That's with graphics at maximum. And the system below was very very cheap. :P1 point

I am writing this message because I not only feel obligated, but also, because I would like to offer an apolgy to everyone following this thread. After some deep thinking, but most importantly, after some really good 'talks' with Triggerhappy69, this will be my last post in this thread. I am doing this in part because of a rather nasty message left by someone. Thankfully Acedy edited out the offending remarks. Since the thread was re-opened speculations concerning Urze have run rampant. This is wrong. And I feel in part responsible for this happening because I have been the most 'vocal' person in this thread. And I let my frustrations, and yes, at times, anger, get the best of me. When that occured I wrote some rather nasty speculations labeling Urze, among other things, a scammer and thief. That was totally uncalled for, and, I believe, only helped to 'fuel the fire'. Anger is a basic human emotion. We all experience it, but, it is how we deal with it that matters. So setting my emotions aside, I read Triggerhappy's post again. This time I understood the point he was trying to get through to "all of us". I also knew my 'gut reactions' to be inappropriate. I then spent a good deal of time reading many of the 'hundreds' of posts written by Urze, (a great deal of them in Triggerhappy's popular thread; " Uuuuaaah..! I have started building now..!" In all of his messages he offered his knowledge, help, and assistance to many members of this forum, (myself included). And as I read them I also gathered the joy Urze has with this, (our) hobby. He has helped many people, and, made many friends in the process. So I can see how it is indeed puzzling for him to suddenly stop communicating. Over the past several days I have been in contact with Triggerhappy. I told him I now understand the point he was making, and, I apologised for my shortsightedness. We have been trading some really good talks back and forth, and, I have made a new friend. So thanks Triggerhappy, and, definately +1 rep for him! In closing, I would like to thank all of the people who have offered their assistance to me. I do hope one of Urze's friends is able to contact him, and, I do hope all is well. Of course he is not a scammer, and, he didn't run off to some exotic island. It isn't THAT much money. It also makes no sense whatsoever. My final thought is that perhaps this thread should be closed. It is serving no purpose other than people speculating. But it was one thoughless, cruel speculation, (edited out) that has made me re-think everything. So this will be my last post in this thread. I wish everyone 'good flying', and, thank you.1 point

Well, after all it comes to management. Ka-32 has already set a benchmark in Canada- 285 flight hours per... month. And that can't be possible without proper maintenance and logistics. So russian system works but not for all, that's the problem. When you pay you get, trouble is that it allows to pay less and accordingly get less (quality). But russians are not the one to discover the hot water- quality issues are common for all. For instance Airbus, what I'm currently working on- they just skin you alive for nothing, that much you pay. And same problems like ukrainian parts- I get an overhauled actuator for installation and it leaks right from the box...1 point

Pitbuilding update 29. march 2009 - Trigger mechanisms launch trigger is finished This has been the single most mind bending task so far.. And I haven't even really begun on the Cannon triggers return spring yet. But as far as I hope, the worst is done on the Cyclic Stick's Trigger Mechanism. And here's how I think it will work..:music_whistling: 1: A switch with a spring cut to correct length with pliers. The switch is attached mainly by the soldering legs that go through the 3mm aluminum backplate (wires and crimp-screen comes later to prevent short circuit) 2: this plate is 0,5mm Aluminum in a 90 degree angle. The plate pivots around the main axle of the triggers. And it's job is to evenly apply the preasure from the return spring (4) to the microswitch (3-Cannon Select ON-OFF) that is mounted underneath. 3: A tiny microswitch that when released will send the keystroke "C" to the simulator. 4: Coil spring that returns the Launch Trigger when it's not in use. Here you see the Microswitch for Select Cannon and the Launch Triggers return spring. Also you can see why I needed a pivoting plate to distribute the force from the spring to the switch. Without the plate the spring moved to much and fell of the switch all the time. (and it looks cooler with the plate too) Seee... MUCH COOLER..! I also put a stoppr for the Launch Trigger on. So it will not return to a position higher than my fingers can grab it..! ... and I have just started on the Cannon Trigger. I used epoxy putty to mold a solid part for the hinge.. More on that later. The plate is springloaded from the return spring. But the load is not high enough to press it. Not before you pull the Launch Trigger down! I'm using a BU0836 Controller Card on the Cyclics buttons. And with SVMapper I can configure it so that when the switch is released, it will send the Key "C" to the Sim. and when it's pressed another key "C" is sendt.. The point where the Launch trigger is activated. .. just another picture.. I also modified the Push Buttons to hold microswitches. They looked the part, but to activate them I had to press them 8-10mm in! And that just will not work.. Here you see basicly the whole modification.. It was quite simple once I found out what I wanted to do.. Just a bit of sandpaper and a pair of pliers, and it was done.. Now they have the right "CLICK" feel to them.. .. but they still look good..!1 point
