Hi guys, the lovely new BS2 has got me back in helos again. Its been a year or so and I have some issues getting set up again. I have a warthog and have downloaded and installed the Dragon profile, set my rudders to the right axis etc. However, when I load up free flight, the joystick pitch is pointing me straight at the ground as the mission starts. If I pull back straight away I can avoid lawndarting the helo, but it appears that centre position for my joystick is equating to fully forward in the sim and fully back in the stick on my desk equates to centred in the sim. I have tried resetting the trim, no difference. The rest of the axis and controls seem to be working as they should. I should add that I have tried trimming and it makes no difference, I bring the helo level, press trim, release the stick and it just pitches down again and can only be recovered by keeping the joystick pulled fully back.. Can anyone help? Thanks! Mark1 point

One must understand how IL-2 works. This is not a "how it feels" game. More of a "numbers say this" game. The original IL-2 (first release not FB) was quite well made, everything seemed to work according to what you might have expected and a 190 would pretty much always own those damned Lavochkins. Stuff got messed up with Forgotten Battles and Pacific Fighters (the latter one being not actually Oleg's projects, but Luthier's - the guy responsible for CloD). Now the main problem is, that the initial game took only some basic numbers (weight, wingspan, engine power, etc) and calculated the FM somehow - I'm not really sure about how it was, just repeating what some people refered to as common knowledge. After jets and more complicated planes got in the game, each FM was specific for the aircraft. Initially some planes would defy the laws of physics (190, full rudder, yanking stick back did not result in a flip). Anyway, most of the stuff got fixed by now, but people are still complaining. I think it's the game engine's limitations that come into play (drag is a bit of an abstract concept in IL-2, prop pitch also is not exactly what it is, only the recent patch did proper stuff to overheating). I could go on and on, played this for years, mostly offline, but I am more or less familiar with the FM battles on forums. I think with such an amount of planes and people ranting, it's now impossible to make the FMs how they should be. Last changes to the 190 made it a no drag plane and it turns out, the drag for the FWs is mostly from the prop. The Corsair also got slowed down to match what the charts said and all was fine till people discover it was too slow to take off at times. Anyway, there is a ton of stuff that can be said, but the reason Oleg did not listen is probably because many people contacted him saying they are pilots and this and that is wrong and it wasn't possible to make everyone happy. Now Team Daidalos do the patches and it's a great job they are doing (like the AI, finally!), they seem to listen, though I wouldn't expect IL-2 will ever feel a bit like the real thing. One thing has to be said - it was the first WWII sim, that actually showed how hard and complicated flying the planes of that time was, not to mention fighting. Suddenly, it wasn't about making Ace, it was about getting back home in one piece. The game is old and dated now, but still fun to play and easy to get into (the easiest, "serious" sim I'd say). It's simply one of the best sims ever made and will always be. Just one more thing on the FMs, the whole wrong feel, wrong performance thing in game is very subjective as well as it is subjective in real life. You'll find a dozen WWII survivors who will say that P-40, P-51, P-whatever was the best plane because they found it a good machine to fly by their subjective standards. But it also may be so, that 100 guys laying dead in the dirt would curse the plane because it got them killed. Same goes for every other side of the conflict, Russians praise their Lavochkins (somehow the did not mind 20 levers to operate the engine and a +50C temp in the cockpit) and as I'm Polish, I should feel obligated to say: take a hike, the best planes of WWII were the P11c and the Los bomber. :) Once you look past your expectations on a given plane, and start to play the game and try to fly well with what you have, it's tons of fun. Cheers all!1 point

I've had the same problem with TM TARGET. Sometimes if a command involves modifier (e.g LCTRL+c for cannon round selector) the sim registers it randomly without the modifier (in this case "c", which is cannon select). I think the problem is that the command is too fast and thefore the sim might miss the modifier. It's easy to fix if you are using text scripts for making the profiles. There you can set the duration of pulsed commands. It's this line: SetKBRate(60, 70); First number is duration of pulse (in ms) and second number is delay between chained commands. Default duration for pulse is 32 ms and it caused the problem you describe. I found that increasing pulse to 60 ms fixed the problem in my case. If you are using GUI I'm not sure it's possible to change the duration. I suggest that you learn the basics of script language, it's much more versatile and even faster to make profiles after you learn it. Read the "TARGET_Script_Editor_Basics" and you are making your own scripts in no time.1 point

You can make fun all you want, but let's honest. IL-2 cannot be compared to DCS - it's a whole new era. One must acknowledge though, that Oleg's work was a milestone in sim gaming - the amount of planes, realistic engine management, ballistics... that was something back in the day. As far as flight models go, I still think IL-2 is pretty descent. Bearing in mind how much work went into it over the years to make every whining fanboy happy with his favourite 109 or Spit and the forum battles over which FM is "porked", I think the devs made a pretty solid job. ED is in a very comfortable position with DCS. With the modern planes, fans probably would find it hard to prove something is wrong due to problems with obtaining proper documentation. And as for the Mustang, ED can always say: "Unless you happen to own a P-51 and fly it, shut up!" :D1 point

I changed the "Oxygen Regulator" panel, I made my mistakes pointed Moken (thank you to him). The new PDF is in the zip on the front page as usual. R11 point

I don't know if this is of any value but today I caught the tailwheel/aircraft doing something odd. I was doing some testing when the plane started to roll. The tailwheel was likely unlocked since I had just unlocked the stick so I half-heartedly tried to gain control and bounced the running prop off of the ground. This caused the plane to roll backwards, in a circle, forever. I finally stopped the sim but the aircraft had not given any indication of slowing down much less stopping. The tailwheel looks like it is sliding sideways almost, or that could be the view making it look that way. I watched for over a minute, I think, before I turned Fraps on. By this time my hands, and feet, were long since off of the controls. I attached the track but to get to the good part you will have to sit through quite a few minutes of me testing controller buttons for starting the plane. Also, notice right near the beginning of the video the plane goes straight for a short distance, for no apparent reason, before going back to circling. Sorry for the lousy camera work. Hopefully this is of some use. tail wheel physics.trk1 point

Probably, but then again we had them around for about 5 months in Iraq and almost 6 in A-stan. They were dropping plenty of iron and the advantage of having a them was great because the back seater could handle all the radio traffic from us (on the ground) and operate the TGP while the pilot just focused on flying. Same goes for the F-15Es we were supported by. By contrast, working with a single seat F-16 was much harder to get him to get his TGP on target. I remember one instance that by the time we got him on target (about 30min) he had to go hit the tanker. Is it a risk for ED to try and make this work: sure. Should they give it shot: yes. My two cents fellas.1 point

Yes but the F-16D/F-15D and the F-18D are Combat Capable Trainers. The F-18F is the only one of these that is a real combat plane. I do think that third party would do a good with a two seater but to me I think people will more readily except an MP only aircraft from a third party than from ED.1 point

Don't be so negative! Lots of people would like to see it happen, but it has been discussed a lot in the past. I believe it should be possible with DCS's superior netcode, but it will take some motivation on ED's part to make it happen, either with their own or a 3rd party made aircraft. The future looks great for DCS, so I believe this will happen, eventually.1 point

Somebody to CH Hangar, for DCS or FC2, I think, made a profile using all 3 modes using scripts. It has 3 separate colors of identifying text. Pretty awesome. See below, the last link. Here is a great utility for printing out the controllers and what each button does: http://www.ch-hangar.com/forum/showthread.php?6962-CM-Print-v4.50-Beta-1 and some older ways of doing it: http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll239/ViperDriver/AcesHighII/Blank_Fighterstick.jpg http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll239/ViperDriver/AcesHighII/Blank_Throttle.jpg Some scripts for the other sim I play: http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,290623.0.html And a profile for Flaming Cliffs 2.0 by Ruggbutt: http://www.ch-hangar.com/forum/showthread.php?7156-Flaming-Cliffs-2.0 He uses all 3 modes for the CH gear. Home for CH Hangar: http://www.ch-hangar.com/forum/content.php Another link that may or not be useful from my collection: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=33591 Yes, I just need to focus and take the time to learn it. It has to be easier than learning the Ka-50 Black Shark. I know a little BASIC and about the same of the HTML languages. I have built web pages in the past. I created a (.map) profile without (.cms) scripts for the DCS:P-51D based on my Aces High profile for use with the CH Control Manager. I used every button in one mode. My 1st (.map) profile I made out of necessity for Aces High using the CH Control Manager. I borrowed 2 different scripts from the links above and incorporated them, but I did not write the scripts. I think I will make a profile for the jet in DCS World and hopefully it will also work in FC2. If not, I will make two. Then some day I will learn scripting and mod them. With a little luck maybe I will live another 20 years and see age 80. I think I have enough activities to keep my mind active right here to DCS.1 point

I know that AI will take a far second place to another good human pilot, but I'm not trying to replace the second human with the AI. I'm trying to replace blank spots in the player list. I don't think it's safe to assume that there will always be another person ready to jump in to a two seater whenever you're ready. Playing FC2 online, people don't always communicate and they don't always balance the teams numbers wise. With two seaters, the same applies but you could also just be in a room where no one wants to only do half the job and they all stick to their single seaters. If the AI is done for single player and already coded, I think it only makes sense to have available in multiplayer (depending on how much more code it will take to implement into MP). This is not for the purpose of having people flying around in two seat planes by themselves, but for the purpose of making sure that on the off chance that the AI would be helpful, it's there and they player can make the decision to use it or not.1 point

It should still be. I remember it was there during beta and also all of the Nuke test sites and their craters were visible.1 point

Get a CH stick. I had a TM Cougar and it was junk (without 500.00 mods). The CH is plastic but its quality and will last forever. Had mine going on 6 years.1 point
