February 2015 - DCS Newsletter Discussion
Demongornot replied to Raven68's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
I had more in mind a support and auto defence SEAD, it can happen that we had to deal with a huge SA-10 site, flying low and being terrain masked, but then suddenly we see it on the mountain-less path to the next waypoint, too far from fighters patrol/escort mission than a SEAD capable aircraft come help us... Well in such case i will be really happy to shoot my beautiful-radar-seeker-angry-warhead way too far for any Maverick to even dream about it and back safely on the mountain while the SA-10 have a bad day :D Even if we can't get away fast enough from the incoming fire to lets our missile get the enemy radar down, we could hide while his inertial system will be probably enough to archive a correct impact, even if i don't know how reliable those secondary guidance are ! But surely i can understand your point that it have probably not enough concrete application to waste pylons and weight for one or two AGM-88 in simple prevention and have no real use as SEAD platform cause of how slow it is ! Even if the Su-25 have this capability, he is way faster ! -

It is not what he said, but i have never understand why they have never suited the real A10C with AG radar, terrain following AP and SEAD capability, sure the Gatling will interfere with the radar, but we don't need radar while firing it, even a search radar not even able to lock will be so much better for finding targets ! If only we could copy and past stuff from the A-10C to the F/A-18C haha They are so different that the Mig-21 with his supersonic flight model will probably more to give as data then the A10C haha Anyway about the Newsletter, anyone have see the Mig-15 Trailer ? The Nevada terrain and the generals graphics look incredible in this video, it look like DCS World 2.0 will be a great step forward ! -
Yes it is the same, for those who don't understand why, i think its : It offer the choice, for those who want all aircraft they can buy FC3 and for those who only want a single aircraft or two, F-15 and/or Su-27 for fighter lover or A10A and/or Su-25A for ground attack lovers, they will pay 10/20$ for one/two aircraft rather than FC3 for 40$ and aircraft they might not ever use, some might only want a single aircraft for example, if you want Su-33 or Mig-29 there is no choice yet, we will have to wait for the PFM variant or buy FC3 ! So if you own FC3 you don't need to buy them and if you have DCS World F15C and only want it you don't need FC3 !

The picture is just an example, i was explaining to popup from mountains, i know tree are lot collidable yet, but i wasn't able to find a picture of an helicopter poping up from a mountain (google image can't find anything correct except if you spend one hour looking for something after trying 3000 keyword and find what you look for with a completely illogical search keywords...Haha) Base on how tree look in DCS World 2.0 Nevada video, i think they will be ONLY for newest map Tree can't be made collidable now simply because they have wrong collision box compare to the 3D model and hit you well over their visual size... For Nevada maybe, but i'm afraid of the Arma like effect where tree = wall of bricks... Seriously the way you instantaneously explode in Arma just after gently and slowly touch a tree is horrible and kill every realism and immersion and stop me from wanting to play helicopter in this... I hope ED will do a correct tree damage system, a lot of aircraft have already chop down top of tree without even having troubles sometimes : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9DFUqbdH_0 And best proof/example : Take that Arma ! Right in your Teeth ! Please ED don't do wall brick tree if you make them collidables ! Even small and really fragile RC plane survive it : So as i said, since Georgia map don't have collidable tree cause of hitbox only, i think ED won't make those new tree without give them proper hitbox this time, but will they correctly render damages...Not sure !

"This pictures will approve it is true" Halala this old time where video was a solid proof :D DCS Wright Brother's Flyer 1 With this thing, even a seagull take off will create enough wake turbulences to be taking in account haha Personally i want my DCS controllable paper airplane, Shockwave rider More seriously, talking about special non combat aircraft, i think that we should have an aerobatic aircraft, something like the MXS/MX2 or the Extra300 because it will be fun, not the hardest in term of avionic, and a really nice showcase of the flight model and game physic engine, everyone in the virtual aerobatic server will LOOOOOOVE this ! And pylon race will make sense with this ! No one will make me believe he is not interested in this : PLUS aircraft information and pilot feedback won't be hard to find ! Even aerobatic itself have tons of documentation ! http://www.icas.org/ICAS_ARCHIVE/ICAS2002/PAPERS/3105.PDF http://homes.esat.kuleuven.be/~highwind/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Gros2012b.pdf

I'm not an expert in combat with helicopter and i might be wrong... But my advises : for the Huey, you want to avoid most as possible every kind of AAA/heavy calibre and SAM, don't forget that this helicopter was first done for troop/supplies transporting on the battlefield and mainly armed for clearing the LA before dropping troops or evacuate them, he is a gunship but not made as combat helicopter unlike the AH-1, which is a modified Uh-1 made for fighting because it is not the primary goal of the Huey and even if they can be efficient they are not design for this ! So when you see something else than small calibre, try to avoid them or if you have no choice (for example a BMP) take them by surprise from their back while their turret point forward (away from you), it will give you a slight power, surprise and time advantage. Don't forget to move, never hover in this situation ! For the Ka-50, this helicopter is mainly done for single pilot with a lot of piloting aid for you to focus on combat and the mission rather than piloting it, if their is only AAA, try to shoot them from long as possible, stay low but not too much and do a lot of manoeuvres and avoid to hover too much, even too far for AAA, main battle tank will be able to shoot you with 105/120 cannon ! So fear M1 Abram and M2 Bradley ! If their is SAM and/or a lot of units, say low and use the terrain to hide yourself : Pop up like this, don't forget to trim to both make your nose point to the target (HDG assist, use it and not fight against it) and having a stable/safe hover close to the mountain ! If you see any AAA fire or missile launch, just get out of the Hover and hide by going down, don't forget to be low enough to avoid to expose your coaxial rotor ! Also don't forget that in this case AAA bullet will be ballistic, so they will come slightly from above cause of the angle, and missiles can sometimes goes up a lot before reaching you, so be careful for both case to not forget to dive deep enough behind the mountain, don't pop-up at the same spot, move far enough lateral in case of longer ETA for bullets/missile, it will be bad of you pop-up on a second bullet storm ! Don't forget that tree are not collidable yet so don't count of them to protect you ! Try it ! Hope it will help you !

Since we already have the Sabre to counter the Mig-15, i think the proper enemy will be the F-4, but i will not mind if we could have the F-14 Tomcat ! But hey the Phantom is nice, and Top Gun was inspired of a true story of F-4 pilots, even the manoeuvre of airbrakes + throttles idle + pull hard to pass behind the enemy was real and done in a F-4 vs Mig-21 dogfight ! And the F-4 is carrier capable :D ! Of course like almost everyone i look more forward to have the Cobra and the Hind first, too much non-modern fighter aircraft already done and only 3 helicopter, only one are attack and its a special one !

"Why Nevada?" - Mission Potential for the Forthcoming Terrain
Demongornot replied to Splat's topic in Mission Editor
I have not read comment (only the OP), but even if personally i don't really care about the terrain in fact, don't matter for me if this is a real/fictional/US/Russian on anything else ! I mostly looking forward to the highly detailed terrain itself and EDGE to run this smoothly rather than which IRL location is made ! But since the terrain will be the Nevada anyway, well even if this is sadly a highly desert region (a lot of empty terrain to flight over), at least between the salt lakes, and the HUGE runway of the airbases on the area, it will be fun to be able to land at a lot of locations (because jet fighter SHOULD be able to land on salt lake without broking gear or having the stupid super glue effect from actual Georgia map) ! Super Long Runway can permit practice but also nice landing, like the LOOONG run flare before front gear touch down style, and i'm sure we will have lot of fun in this map ! The Virtual Aerobatic Server Nevada will probably be crowded (at first at least) and really fun to try out i'm sure ! I expect a lot of Red Flag and training mission types, and finally i also looking forward to a lot of combat mission because, well simulation or not DCS still fictional in his missions, so there is no point of avoiding open war type of missions just because there is no war on Nevada region actually, it may change in the future after all ! Who know ! But i also looking forward to play around Las Vegas, buzzing the buildings/hostels and casino and flying between them with the helicopters, and a Mi-8 formation flight patrol will be really funny over Las Vegas :D Also with the famous Area 51 a lot of fun can be probably done at this location, and i'm sure this location will be iconic for WIP aircraft from third party/mods because its sure that at least once we will see someone make announcement for an aircraft at parking or take off/landing at Groom Lake with screenshots looking like amateur pictures, like if a top secret aircraft have been spotted ! At least there is nice mountains, nice long and straight roads that i'm sure a lot will land on, and there is also lakes, so even if this is NOT perfect for a carrier, i'm sure we can put a carrier on a lake for the upcoming F/A-18C Hornet to both having advantages of the new map and carrier landing ! The Pyramid lake is for sure big enough ! And then we will finally have something realistic to do with our WW2 Warbird in modern age, something interesting that the Virtual Aerobatic Server will probably enjoy a lot !!! RENO AIR RACE !!!!!!!! :D Ho and did someone remember which military jet we often see at Reno Air Race ? That's right :D So yeah there is a lot to do in the Nevada ! -
Don't forget that the sound can also travel through the structure of the aircraft, sound is vibration, i'm pretty sure pilot hear both the jet engine sound and this whistle sound since it is really loud and it is caused by a vibration ! Also we have external camera, we can often have another aircraft taking off while we still startup/refueling/rearming with canopy open, others aircraft such as the P51 can also flight with canopy open etc etc, there is tons of reasons why we should have this sound, after all the whistle sound from the P51 aerodynamic was reproduced ! And it won't be a really hard thing to reproduce ! NEVER think that something is unimportant, that's probably the reason why we don't have wake turbulences caused by others aircraft, engine compressor stall/flame out, wings vapour/Mach cone effect, proper ground etc At this rate, when the F-18 will come out a lot of things about it will be throw away because consider as unimportant, like his really characteristic and nice sound : How many small details can be removed before it create important differences between the sim and the reality ? TOO MUCH things are missing in DCS, some of them could be done quickly but are not consider as important by ED, But i'm sure that during a hard manoeuvre the huge vapor on wings can have a huge impact on the dogfight, from loosing visual of an aircraft that merge in our six cause of the vapour in our wings while without vapour it can still be visible, to the fact that when you loose visual contact, the fact that the vapor will act as a flickering white thing in almost the entire aircraft and can be pretty reflective, it can i'm sure help you to recover visual contact or to spot the aircraft ! Since we now have the back smoke coming out of the engine, it can seam like a small detail, but it have a significant impact on detection ! How many times we now be able to visually detect aircraft thanks to the engine smoke ? The fact that the pilot can be hungry, tired and all others things like this yes this is skippable (mainly since we, ourselves already have those effect in real life), but others things such as G effect, hypoxia, cabin pressure/temperature out of acceptable are and more are not details ! Time the landing gear need to retract/deploy can make a huge difference, real life F-15 pilot can't take off full afterburner while having a light climb rate, during the landing gear retracting they cut out the afterburner (or retract the gear really soon) in DCS the gear don't even seam to get damage, but everyone agree that a damaged landing gear is not a detail ! Edit : Here is a perfect video example of what i mean about vapour : In this video the vapour is more visible than the aircraft itself and i'm sure at high altitude a flickering white/dark thing will attract quickly attention !
-
Personally i wish for the F-15 engine whistle sound ! This is iconic of the Eagle, the sound its not just a detail since it make more noise than the full afterburner, and since the Mustang have its whistle sound during turn, why not having the F-15 engine whistle too ? And what about engine compressor stall/flame out ? Because its not just a detail, it happen in real life and it should be part of DCS !
-
I don't think so, the development of EDGE have started probably too soon before those two was reveals and since ED is not a huge game company i'm sure they can't have prerelease access to those tech so earlier and easily !
-
Multiplayer is not the best optimized part of DCS yet, also maybe the server crash or restart, a lot of server have an auto restart !

Bug Report Hud Acceleration indication
Demongornot replied to Demongornot's topic in Su-27 for DCS World
Ho okay i though he said that the computer in the real aircraft took the information from throttle position relative to every others flight data and then compute the result ! But yeah it make it useless and since the Russian HUD only show dozen Km/h we need this if we want precision in our speed ! -
I don't know if this is intended, but i seriously doubt that the FBW on the real aircraft do all that. I was on a combat server with the Su-27, condition : No trim and flight by wire disabled before take off, i wanted to test in combat situation how this is to have pure flight experience cause i haven't test the Su-27 without FBW with weapons before, i wanted to see the difference with FBW ON and OFF, mainly to see if there is any link with the constant trim that we always need that a lot of peoples complain about ! Fuel, gun, flares chaff all full, fuel probably around 95% minimum (take off without afterburner, i was close from the TO airport) ! Payload : ECM, R-73, R-27ET, R-27ER, R-27ER, R-27ER, R-27ER, R-27ET, R-73, ECM I was flying stable at low altitude, less than 1000M radar altitude, around 700/800 Km/h, then i wanted to compare the difference on a fully combat loaded Su-27 between flight by wire and direct controls. So i turn ON the FBW (and YES i'm sure i've turn it ON and not OFF) and my aircraft goes high AOA and almost do the Cobra by itself, while constating this i have try to push nose down, since he was responding and starting to lower the nose, i was pulling up to avoid the negative G to death effect, and then it have still happen ! So the flight model is apparently pretty good, but the FBW is a pain and need serious rework ! And based on what have happened here i'm sure i can safely say that the too intensive needed trim are caused by the FBW, without FBW i don't need to trim and i don't need to move far from center my joystick to keep my aircraft stable, with FBW we need constant and exaggerated trim to keep the aircraft stable, there is a too big difference on needed stick position between FBW ON and OFF ! Also another issue i have see, with the FBW ON even while performing negative G manoeuvre this is difficult in standard diving condition to get this negative G to death effect, of course without the FBW this is easy ! But once we disable the FBW and turn it ON again, even in a standard condition, if we pull down we will get the negative G to death, this is another issue with the FBW !!! Also i have notice that the gear handle have a strange delay when the FBW is turn off ! I don't know if this is a normal behaviour or not but when i disable the FBW and use the Roll axis, the vertical surfaces control follow the movement, (it look like a FBW feature to me) but with the fully combat loaded i don't get this effect, once FBW was turn off only the rudder make the vertical surfaces control responding !

Bug Report Hud Acceleration indication
Demongornot replied to Demongornot's topic in Su-27 for DCS World
Even in some climb situation at 1g it still happen, i mean, this indicator is almost never right except when you obviously loose or take a lot of speed ! -
I don't know if it have been already reported or not ! But on the hud, on the top left corner, just bellow the airspeed indication, the line with the arrow that indicate if we accelerate or decelerate (to the right while taking speed and to the left while loosing speed) is wrong ! Easy to reproduce, just take the Su-27 and do a regular flight with some turn at different AOA, this indication are sometime to the right which should indicate an acceleration but the airspeed is dropping ! For info i use the latest patch.
-
Apparently it only work on BVR mode, STT and with Radar (i have never get those informations with Electro Optical EO system only), i use it sometime for having the speed of someone i want to follow in formation flight, so yes this is standard i think. And as Kuky say, when you are on navigation mode, what is show is the desired altitude/speed for the selected waypoint !
-
I've just perform a test flight on the virtual aerobatic server with the Su-27 without using trims and in direct control only, well it flight very well, at first is seam hard but we accustom really fast and it become easy, in fact i haven't got any issue with negative G to crash !!! I have crash three times, one cause i was playing performing Cobra too low at a wrong diving angle, so 100% my fault. Second because i have misjudge my visual approach and i was too low, i touch the ground before the runway (not wanted to abort my landing), which have conduct to landing tires explosion and the left engine have not appreciate the impact and was not responding anymore, not a real crash, more a crash landing (i was able to walk away from :D) And the third was another fail way too low cobra ! But it look like in direct controls we need way less trims, i was only slightly compensating, with FBW we need to trim way more apparently, so it look at the flight model is good, in fact this is way more fun for me to flight without FBW, i'll try this in combat, without trims i never get risk to this negative G of death ! I had once this minus 90° stuck position, and i've simply put one engine at idle and the other at 90% or something like this without AB and i was able to recover without problems, even if it had happen to me lower than 5000m, but it was my fault cause i was playing doing high AOA flight experiments ! So if there is any problem with the need to trim, it come from the FBW, the flight model itself is fine !
-
I use toe brakes but still, they are pretty effective for me too even loaded with full setup, but my brake expectation for a dozen tons aircraft with small wheels are not very high anyway ! Try out the brakes on the Su-25A/Su-25T you will change your minds :D Seriously do it, try the brakes on the Su-25, since he have weak brakes it will both give you a comparison with your Eagle and accustom you to low brakes power, the Su-25 can't even land on medium runway without using his parachute, brakes are that weak ! Idk for the real one, but in DCS they are really weak !
-
About the trim, the thing is, i think we need to trim because our joystick have springs to come back to the center, but i think that in the real Su-27 there is no center like this, or maybe it is really light and comfortable and don't require the pilot to fight against it, which is probably why they do flight without trimming ! Not sure about it, but it look like it, so rather than trimming the aircraft to flight straight while having the stick center, they center their stick where its needed to flight the aircraft straight... And also unlike a lot of aircrafts that use a small trim tab, on this kind of aircraft (a lot of jet fighters) trimming change the default center of the joystick apparently, even if i'm not sure about how it work on the Su-27, but i'm sure it is in fact different from what we have with our PC joystick that only have a non mobile center point, we need more info on how the trims system work on this but it don't surprise me that real Su-27 pilots don't need to trim. This aircraft is really unstable by nature and unlike F-15 and F-16 he don't have auto trim ! So yeah it also don't surprise me that we need a lot of trimming in DCS, personally i only barely trim it and then do the correction by hand ! And i won't be surprised if you told me that this aircraft totally loose control if you happen to release your joystick... Someone know how behave the real Su-27 Stick here ?
-
Ground Crew is a LONG TIME asked feature like vapour, improved contrail and come mach effect, but apparently ED may probably if they can do it, after 2.0, maybe for the carriers at first, (which seam logic) But its only a small theory i made based on this and not a rumour : http://www.mudspike.com/qa-with-matt-wagner-producer-eagle-dynamics/ This is NOT stated inside, but i think that this is a possibility, and one of the new actual third party aircraft (idk which one) have a 3D model for the ground power !
-
Congratulation, we all hope you will enjoy your Migs, don't broke them :D Have a good flight !
-
If i would have enough money to invest on DCS module right now i'll probably want to fly this beauty ! Honestly if i had have enough money i would probably buy every aircraft and even if it will took time, learn to fly them all, but like everyone point out, this manned missile will be nice/fun to have !
-
I have some bad habits as well, i don't like to use ground power, but after the fuel gauges, the ox and the both lights check, i turn on APU and then EVERY system before the APU actually produce power, but really everything (except engine start crank and EPLRS) from navigation to CMS to lights, taxi lights... Not sure if someone can answer me about that, but i think that the real aircraft will not like that suddenly overrequest of power, or is it okay ? Anyway by doing this rather than the problematic ground power, i can even with a standard ground alignment save a lot of time for the startup ! And don't broke another ground power unit :D Another bad habit, forget to load weapon before starting my aircraft and load MFDS (i'm always mind blocked and focussed on using the intercom once engine are running) and need to reload DSMS from the load page if i want to use my weapons... Since i have not done real (i mean serious, not irl of course) combat mission since a while, i have loose a lot of things, i loose a lot of important reflex, like drop some flares/chaff, i loose situation awareness a lot, i always forget to turn off the damn nav lights in hostile area, always take extreme measure when i get a launch. Ho and i always load a LOT of weapons, seriously i'm always way over the maximum take off weight, full of fuel and bombs/MAV and in fact i find the take off more stable cause the aircraft is less responsive, so i get more precision, but yeah if i get any emergency i'm probably dead... IDK if it can be considering as a bad habit, but i love dropping JDAM from high as i can get, often around 25000 feets, depending if i can go that high (too heavy to reach) or over it (some fuel consumed and some bombs dropped) the bomb need more than a minute to fall from that high, seriously you can probably walk away while finishing your coffee and still get at a safe distance from that bomb the time she fall  I also get MAV probably always align too soon, and my TGP is probably so hot (always ON) i wonder how it not turn into a fireball by itself ^^' And the China hat...Seriously the day i won't mistake the 4 commands and reset my sensors rather than just making a zoom, i'll be so happy ! Ho and just for the style effect, i always like to land doing a huge flare once main gear have touch down, like we see often with the F-15 and F-16...And then ran out of runway :D And my two worst, every aircraft mixed, is using my two others screens (3 screens but i only run one for games) for various things, including writing on Skype, looking things on the web, including video, so sometimes i made some...small mistakes... And forgetting my key binding, for the A10C its okay even if their is some useful keyboards combination i don't remember, but in the others aircrafts...I don't even remember where is my NWS or my trim reset on most FC3 aircrafts :D
-
Since ED work on the F/A-18C Hornet (and Coretex Designs on the E) and since this aircraft use a drogue system for refueling, i won't worry about it, i'm sure the Hornet will be release before the Mirage, so we will have a new or a modified tanker with drogue before the Mirage is release !
