  1. I'm not an expert on the subject, but I've actually heard this mentioned in audiobooks about the phantom. This info is from from "Fighter Pilot" by Robin Olds. During Operation Bolo they wanted to use jammer pods to look like they were really Thuds and migs would scramble up after them, but they ran into a lot of issues because they were never mounted on the F-4 to that point. They mentioned explicitly that it could only fit on one side because the wiring could only deliver enough power to that one side, so it's likely the echoes of that particular issue, so we might only be able to mount one or the other in that specific station.
  2. Having an issue with the waypoints in the harrier, for some reason when I set a waypoint it will sometimes have 0 elevation and can be a huge problem when playing on maps with higher generally higher elevations. When I try to manually enter the waypoint elevation it seems to change to another unit, or is just getting the wrong info somehow, example I punched in 728 ft and it translated that to 221 ft. I heard someone mention that it apparently does elevation in meters for some reason, but my MPCD definitely says 221 FT, and the TPOD is tracking a mole man deep underground rather than the target. Any way to just tell the waypoint to go to ground level automagically? That or just understand why it's doing this odd quirk?
  3. Found an old Airforce Film that mentions and talks about it. These seem to be the non Agile Eagle variants of the phantom their talking about, but I'd imagine it's relevant. Essentially breaks it down as if you have a high AoA - they say that as you start to approach 14-15 units of AoA you need to use more rudder, and once you get up to 15 units you have to stop using the stick and swap entirely to rudder, or you'll suffer adverse yaw and likely enter a flat spin. They also make the particular note of "Recovery from a flat spin is impossible". Don't even mention ways to try and get out of it, just that it will push you out of your seat some, but not enough to keep you from ejecting. EDIT: They actually MENTION the E Model phantom. Don't know if all Es had the Agile Eagle upgrade, but they made no distinction between the E and other models, so I imagine the comments in the video and made above about using rudder during high AoA maneuvers will hold true, and we'll just have to wait until we can get our greasy flight simmer hands on it to see how brutal or forgiving the forces are.
  4. Fighter Pilot, by Robin Olds is my favorite of the lot. TOPGUN: An American Story by Dan Pedersen was also pretty good.
  5. I've been consuming a good deal of audio books related to the Phantom in preparation for the (hopefully still on schedule for this year) release. I know about adverse yaw as a concept, and if you don't go give it a quick Google. Essentially, I've heard through these audiobooks that atleast the early phantoms had some REALLY aggressive adverse yaw at slow speeds. Like a hard swerve in the opposite direction following by an uncontrolled snap roll that can transition to a full on tumble. Was this corrected for the version of the phantom we're getting, or will this be something we have got contend with?
  6. I've doubled checked the LMAV is the correct variant, the E2, not just the flat E. Thought the LMAV feed was the problem, this was the answer, appreciated. Though I still have the question, do I have to "spool up" the missiles every time I want to engage a target? I know I have to do it atleast once, but more mean is it necessary for every time I happen to deselect it to look at something else like my map.
  7. Having some issues when trying to practice for it. Not sure if I'm just botching something or if this is how it's meant to be. Every time I deselect the LMAVS they have to go through their lengthy STBY phase, is that normal? It's quite annoying because the TPOD automatically deselects them when bringing it up. I know only the E2 mav can be self lased. Second, how do I self lase if I have to do the warm up every single time? Like I said, when trying to bring up the TPOD, it deselects the LMAV and I have to go through the process again. It seems incredibly unwieldy if that's normal.
  8. 9. You're just trying to throw us off the scent. Just admit it! ADMIT IT!
  10. Currently running: i7-6700 (What I would imagine my FPS bottleneck in DCS is) RTX 2070 Super 8 GB (Upgraded from a 1060 w/ 3 GB marked increase in frames) 32GB DDR4 3200mhz RAM w/ a 16 GB Page File (What programs like HWInfo and Task Manager suggest is the bottle neck - Commonly maxing out at 95-99% usage of physical ram, and swallowing up a good chunk of the page file ranging from 30-60%) 1440p 144 hz monitor w/ Nvidia G-SYNC My issue is I would imagine my aging CPU is my bottleneck, but like I commented above performance programs I run suggest that DCS absolutely maxes out my RAM. I manage an easy 70-80 frames in simpler missions, even at low altitude, but as soon as I start up missions/multiplayer with real meat to it I'm rocking 20-40, varying heavily on server population and just how girthy the mission is.
  11. Already use it frequently, thanks for the advice though @silverdevil
  12. Updated drivers and disabling tacview resolved the problem. Odd emphasis on tacview. Disabling tacview allowed me to spawn in and fly in the old areas of the map, updating drivers allowed me to fly in the new part of the map. Crashes have ceased, will be trying to hit that suggestion of a 32 gig page file but the C drive is incredibly cramped as it stands already. Appreciate the advice and help
  13. --- After combing the log and thinking "Hm tacview is the last thing mentioned" I disabled tacview. It's stopped crashing, but now I have to wonder why tacview is crashing my game.
  14. Having an issue with Syria ever since the expansion update. I can open it, I can look at it, I just can't load into a module in it. In multiplayer I can join as a spectator, in singleplayer I've been able to make missions that don't require I personally fly, but when trying to load into a module the game waits 2-5 seconds before freezing, then shortly after crashing straight to desktop. No crash message, no black screen, just closes and goes to desktop. Only on Syria as best I can tell. dcs.log dcs.20220328-071009.crash dcs.20220328-071009.dmp
  15. I've noticed the hind goes down most from two things. Number one is taking an autocannon to the cockpit and your pilot covering that pristine aquamarine cockpit with an ugly, chunky red. The second is uncertain? The only way I know it's happening is the helicopter wobbles TERRIBLY in what feels like a circular pattern, then the rotors rapidly lose speed to a near stop. I'm wondering if anyone knows what the actual cause of death is. My only guess is either A) One of the rotors has been massively clipped, causing uneven lift, causing the wobble, causing strain, causing something to break. B) The gear box (or option C the drive train as a whole) is under going rapid unscheduled disassembly, see this Chinook for details So my question is this. Is there ANYTHING to be done about this other than make a final prayer to your patron of choice? I've tried auto rotation, doesn't work, the rotors simply come to a near complete stop and don't respond to collective changes. Usually happens so fast (longest I had between start of vibration and critical failure is a very, very generous guess of 10 seconds) that any landing one could perform becomes a crash. Maybe kill the engines? Could that prevent total destruction and allow auto rotation?
  16. Everything important is tough and there's a lot of void space where there isn't anything important. I've had flights in the hind where I've been utterly eviscerated by BMP rounds and make it home. Other times a single lucky 12.7 will knock something important out. Sometimes a manpad will hit me square and I fly along just fine, other times it hits me and reduces me to a flaming comet. I've been hit by tank guns and kept going, other times a single 30mm burst will knock my tail rotor off. It all massively depends on where the hits land, and there's a factor of randomness to what actually gets damaged. In the provided example firing from the rear, I'd put a solid chance a lot of rounds passed into the empty troop compartment, lost energy then bounced off the titanium tubs around all the important bits. But of course the easy answer of early access aswell.
  17. I'm feeling comfortable with all the systems in the fishbed, but I'm not feeling comfortable with the actual "fun" part of engaging in fights. I've been playing on the 1947-1991 Cold War server from Alpenwolf and seeing SOME success, specifically in just creeping up on enemies who aren't paying attention to their AWACs. But my question is what do I do in any other situation against the dreaded F-5 menace? If I end up in a situation where it's turn with the enemy or die, what do I do? This is operating on the (usually) safe assumption he has his Aim-9s on board, where unless I'm able to make some significant distance extending away just won't work. Is it just a hopeless battle of staying alive and keeping your fingers crossed they make some horrible mistake, or is there some characteristic of the Mig that can give me an edge? I know all dogfights are horrendously situational so it's hard to give catchall advice, but any advice is appreciated.
  18. As the title says. I know the obvious answer is "later in early access", but I'm more wondering if anyone had seen or heard anything on the subject. I'd have thought they would just yoink stuff from the mi-8.

  19. I typically fly without it. I would use it more if I could individually reset the trim position for my rudders and stick then that'd be one thing, but it has a tendency to screw up my trim positions. If the winds aren't wacky high and I've got around 5-10 minutes of transfer time I kick it on to make flying easier, but tend to switch if off (if not all my autopilots) when moving into contact.
  20. It simply has to happen, but the question is when.
  21. I know I know, they aren't out yet. I also know bombs aren't an ideal weapon for a helicopter. However, I paid for the full weapon system so I'm gonna use the full weapon system. Any news on getting these tables? Anyone find any real soviet bombing tables?
  22. Doesn't do it on his own at all, to my understanding
  23. To my understanding it's not a matter of realigning when it stops working, it's that the gyros are entirely broken. I've not heard similar rumors, but you'd definitely need a friend in the front seat to try it.
  24. To be totally honest I forgot about this post, but it's good to hear!
