Spitfire Prop Animation Cutting VR frames in Half
harm_ replied to muse458's topic in Virtual Reality
Yea, I didn't notice fps drops, but I have the same experience with the gunsight gets distorted. Looks like if was affected by the prop wash ... I will try the 1.5 pd I'm currently using 1.7 -

Sure! Here it is Caucasus Spitfire IX Takeoff.miz -
Yeah, ground loop seems to be the name of the game when landing this bird. LOL, Thanks for the explanation of the physics involved chief, I've never stopped to think about it.

As with everything, the best you can afford. Be aware that no system can run it (at this time) with constant 90fps with high settings so, if you finally buy it before upgrading, test it with your current system I tried the DK2 version in my old PC (RIP) I7 920 overclocked to 3-8, GTX780, SSD, 16Gb and it was able to run. Not as smooth (also the VR support of DCS was iffy in those days). But it worked. The resolution was worse of course but with similar settings worked fine also. CV1 is more demanding (higher res), but the rendering is more efficient now My Curent Specs are: I7 6700K, 32GB Ram, GTX980ti and SSD disk Oculus CV1 Win10 64x Currently I run the setting of the attached image (ignore the resolutions, i had to run the game out of VR to take a screenshot) My pixel density is at 1.7 (i'm experimenting with it) on heavy campaigns I set it to 1.5... If anyone has a setting to share, please, go ahead. Looking forward to try it. I'm doing it the old fashioned way ... trial and error. With these settings, i have a smooth flying experience 90% of the time. I have some hiccups from time to time, over dense cities, and when there is a lot of movement on the airport (for instance in the new F5 campaign. THe first couple of minutes of the missions, there is some stutter. its beareable, but anoying lol.) They work fine in 1.5 and 2. I'm happy with the current performance / visual quality. The oculus is expensive and I dont know which headset is the best... but oh boy!, i'm happy with it. It also Works on P3D, so when i'm in the mood of flying GA planes or a big stupid A320 I do it VR too. I'm looking forward to the hornet. Carrier ops in VR, sweet! Its funny you mention MkI eyeball. With VR I find myself looking most of the time outside instead of staring the MFDs.

@Asset: I was concerned about it too when I was about to buy it. The answer is Yes. Ground object (and air!) are definetely more difficult to see on VR, specially against the ground. I've never tried the VIVE, so my experied is based on rift. And you'll need to be closer to clearly see the object to identify it.(Zoom helps a bit) There are some problems with the lens, due to the close proximity to the eye. In Oculus, the sharpest image is on the center of the lens, so you loose some sharpness outside that sweet spot. (for instance, when you move your eyes instead of your head, a natural instinct) You will see dots in the outside, and you'll have to center it in your view (turning your head) to place in the middle of the image, to get the sharpest outline possible. I have a 23" monitor with the same res as yours, and objects are easier to see on it than with oculus. Try flying on the monitor with the depth of field effect enabled and imagine a bit less resolution, and less Antialiasing and no so perfect clear lines. That will give you a rough idea. The dept of field is present in VR because it is a 3D world, and it is more noticeable than IRL because the image is placed closer to the eye so the depth of field is narrower (If you know a bit of photography you'll understad this better). For instance , if you focus your eyes on the rail of the canopy, the outside will be out of focus. When you focus your eyes on the horizon, the cannopy will be out of focus. On landing, when looking at the runway, you migh get a double vision on the elements of the dashboard. (Try this: put your index finger in front on your nose at arms lengh. And then look ahead into the distance. Then look an your finger That is what I mean.) This is something, we are not used on 2D screens because everything is always in focus. And it takes time to adapt to it in the sim. And it makes spotting things outside more difficult Also there are some factors that will affect how sharp is the image... mainly MSAA and pixel density mainly (framekillers) I'm also a ground pounder, and you'll get used to it and with practice you'll find ground targets. You'll need to fly a bit closer to them than on a 2D screen, but you'll see them. Slightly blurry, but enough to place the pipper on them and release the avenger cannon at 1.2 miles. I'm playing The enemy within, and piercing fury campaigns in VR now, and I'm not having problems finding the targets. The throuble starts, when I have to take notes about Grid coordinates... I use the space between the oculus and my nose to see and write in my notepad... My conclusion is: it is not a perfect tech, it has a lot of problems to solve, and it makes indeed things a bit more difficult in the game. But I can combat with it, maybe I am slower Identifying target and I have to risk myself closing a bit more to ID them. But the experience is awesome. For me balancing things out... the good things outbalances the bad things. It is my opinion.

harm_ replied to 9.JG27 DavidRed's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
If you go into mission editor and then select Create a new mission it should give you options to set red Vs blue sides. Just put UK and Germany in oposite colors. If you can wait until tomorrow I can create the mission for you when I arrive home after work. -

harm_ replied to 9.JG27 DavidRed's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
Yea, its a bit weird. I think everyone thinks Royal Air Force whenever the name Spitfire cames up in a conversation. But it really doesn't matter, It is very easy to fix it. I takes less than a 1 minute on the mission editor. New Mission, change the factions so UK and Germany are enemies, add the planes, Save overwriting the one in quick missions and voila. You're flying a RAF spifire. And it will always be available on Quick Missions. *Added: Save a copy because it may be overwritten on future pathces -
I don't have a lot of flight time on the MkIX (yet), but I used to fly a lot the excelent A2A Simulations Spit MkI Accusim. In that plane, with only one radiator, I learned a lot about temps management, trust me. I fried several merlins... and there was no combat involved. Just high OAT and a noob Spit pilot. So I'm currently using what I learned on it In DCS Spit. (I know the engines are differents, and that I'm loosing performance for sure, but I have yet to blow an engine) I dont have the manual here to check the proper settings, but as Wags wrote, speed is crucial. You need to mantain a good airflow through the rads to keep the merlin happy. 2 important speeds I have in my mind when I fly it. - 180mph is a good reference minimun speed for engine cooling. - Never below 150mph with gear/flaps down for extended periods of time At this point I use the following throttle settings in DCS: - Combat: As required keeping an eagle's eye on my temps. The faster the better, but the most important thing is staying alive. - Low power climb - 2600rpm-2psi-160mph IAS - Normal climb - 2600rpm- 6psi- 185mph IAS - Cruise: I tend to use 2200rpm boost 0 or +2. But I normaly use the power setting required to keep my desired speed. Back then there was a common catch cry that i've read in several pilots talking about their experience in ww2 on the spit: "Low revs high boost will bring you safely home to roost"*. * Notes: - As long as you don't go below minimum rpm for maximum boost. - In cruise, mantaining the speed!. In order to accelerate or climb remember that you must first increase your RPMs and then apply power. Also, there is something that I don't know If it is implemented in the DCS SpitIX, it was in the spit i mentieoned above. There temp indicators may "lag", specially the water temperature. So when heating up, expect the temps to be actually higher than the ones indicated. So be prepared. In this beauty, planning ahead is important.

IThe spit has a lot of torque. For instance, on takeoff you better apply a bit of right aileron to counteract it, and as kozmyk wrote, you'll have to trim the aircraft in flight. There is no aileron trim, and yes I've found that with the slip indicator centered, the Spit tends to bank slowly left, due to the torque of the engine (as expected). You can stop it applying a bit mor of right rudder trim. The torque is VERY noticeable on slow speed and high power settings. Be smooth with your throttle inputs. On prop airplanes with powerful engines, not applying sudden burst of power at low speeds is very important, both in the Sim and IRL. It is dangerous, and there has been a lot of accidents caused by it. Anyway, check your controller input. Go to the axis configuration> Axis tune and look for spikes when moving the joystick

Request: Disable "zoom-in" effect when using Zoom in VR
harm_ replied to Istari6's topic in Virtual Reality
I think you'll suffer more if the view suddlenly snaps into max zoom. It would be great though to have an option to adjust the speed of the transition. -
It has been a dramatic change for me too. I have had to relearn several things (mainly landings) As a oculus CV1 user, I think it is totally worth it, provided you have the funds (if you have to choose between upgrading your system or the VR set... upgrade your system.) The WOW factor when flying on VR is ... you have to try it. You will be amazed the first time you roll inverted, look up and pull on the stick going for a split-S heading to a valley at mach 1... Pucker factor 10+. I will add to what was already posted in this thread, that I found several things that you cannot really appreciate if you are not flying VR: - When you're fling VR you really apreciate the different sizes and ergonomics of the cockpits/planes. For instance, the A10 feels huge, and the cockpit is very big and confortable, jump into a 109 and you will find hoy cramped the cockpit is. Talking about the 109... as a bonus VR ends the neverending discusion about the need of the 109 pilot to lean to one side to aim through the revi ... It is not necesary. You'll see it though your right eye and your brain does the magic. - Refueling, I love it in VR. It is easier for me because it is easier to apreciate the movement (drift, closure rate). Also the KC135 is biGGG - Hovering: your hovers will be more stable on VR (once you train). It is very easy to detect movements as I said before and correct them - Dogfighting IRL is physically extenuating. You wont feel the g-forces but you will have to perform the real movements with your head/body. You will not extenuate yourself, but after an hour of dogfighting you'll feel it in your neck. There is a big difference using TrackIR and using VR to look arround. With trackIR checking six is almost instantaneous... in VR it will take more time, also your SA will drain faster on VR, because of it. ... and more ... Be advised: You may get motion sickness and eye fatige (if you fly very long missions). My recomendation (based on my experience) is: Take Babysteps. Start flying short flights until you get used.( 15 min - 30 min ). Eventually you'll get used. Beware of the helicopters: it is awesome flying them on VR but I don't recommend them as the first VR experience. When I started using the CV1, I had no problems on fixed wings. From time to time I suffered a bit of vertigo when doing some radical manouvers, but nothing more. I jumped on the huey ... and, oh boy!, I got very sick after 5 minutes on i t. I think that was due to the following factors: - Low altitude - Chin bubble - Unestable platflorm on hover/transition speed, it moves a lot and your body doesn't feel it so... I had to stop and call-it a day. Nauseam dissapeared after an hour After a couple of weeks, i feel vertigo on the huey from time to time (for instance when I try to land on a rooftop), but nothing dramatic

I have experienced a traffic JAM on mission 05 several times, caused by the flight "Eagle Sweep 4". When they start taxiing, Nº3 and Nº4 get stucked behing players flight. They cannot complete the turn out of their parking possitions. Initially I bypassed the problem as explained in this post: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=158803 Then I edited the mission and removed the static objects: New Static Object 026, 017, 018, 019 An changed Eagle Sweep 4 parking positions to the static object positions. This solved the issue, at least on my system. And please, enable the refueling task for the tankers :). They seem not operational, there is no way to contact them, (at least on mission 8, when I tried to get some jp4... I barely made it home). It also might help saving our wingmans by making them refuel before RTB

MSN-05 ---- traffic jam - very few jets got airborne
harm_ replied to SDsc0rch's topic in F-15C 16-2 Red Flag Campaign
Yeah, I've experienced the same issue. The problem is caused by the F15s that are parked behind Ford1 flight. In order to avoid the traffic jam, i did the following: Start the jet ASAP. ATC: (if you dont do this, the wingmans will not follow you) - Request Startup - Cancel Takeoff. - Request Takeoff. [the ATC comms are somehow delayed, ignore it. Just wait for the visual confirmation of the ATC reply Taxi and takeoff behind the first pair of tornados. All the flights made its push time with less than a minute of delay. I had to make an orbit on SP6 to wait for my Push time (03:51L) but the mission went like a charms. No kills by me though ;) I hope it helps if someone stucked until a solution is found. It might be clearer on the Tacview file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4bda1ExaiELelNJSy1aaVg2bjg/view?usp=sharing -
Negative, that selector allows you to home on an UHF radio signal (Mhz). It is not meant to home on NDB beacons (Khz). Happy flying Edit: You can use TACAN/VOR for radio navigation with the E-25 (C-101EB) You will be able to do ADF navigation with the C-101CC version. Take a look http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=138304

I had the same problem in Vazianni airport, southmost parking slots, the ones closest to the runway. It works in the rest of the airfield though. Drach try changing the parking position to see if it works.

Yea, the F-104 for MS is great, but ... you don't have the "combat simulator" part, that is what most of the people want to do with it. But is great just to buzz around an do some flying

You know when it's time to take a break from DCS A10-C when..
harm_ replied to HAVOC131's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
When you go to have some drinks with a friend that also flies the Hog and both start discussing attack profiles on a SAM infested area (of course hand movements are mandatory to explain the maneuvers)... The time passes and you realize that half of the pub is staring at you with a suspicious look. -
Oculus Rift DK2 + DCS World: How to get it working.
harm_ replied to arketype's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I would say, no, it is not worth it right now. The resolution is just too low, the AA doesn't work properly and you'll have hard time finding contacts (Ground or Air) around you. You won't be able to read the dials / hud unless you lean forward. And forget reading any text within the game Also, be aware that it might cause you motion sickness, from light to heavy. In my case I don't usually have problems with it, but it happens once in a while. Last time was in a rolling scissors with some Mig15.... I just started suffering strong nausea ... That being said, its potential is huge. And you ACTUALLY feel that you are in the plane. My advice is just wait until the consumer version is out, and use the money upgrading your system or save it for the release of the device. -
Excelent video mate. And by the way, I dont mind the E25 not having spanish markings. Why should it, anyway?
-
Oh, now I see what you mean. i was looking in the wrong direction. You mean the 00:07 second mark. Yea, looks a bit unnatural. I will test that on my system. It may be SFM ...
-
I see nothing wrong in the plane behaviour... Do you mean the ADI getting halted when you're at 0 G's? I see the VSI moving without stopping, and the altimeter also ... Watch this video: Minute 3:09. The plane behaviour looks very similiar Also, at very low speed the elevator becomes ineffective

I want one of those patches .... love it :megalol:

A10C campaign: The Enemy Within
harm_ replied to baltic_dragon's topic in User Created Missions General
I'll try them if you need more testers. -
I prefer flying a good depiction of an old aircraft, the closest to the reality as possible like the A10, Mig21, E-25, F104, Mi24, Hawk ... than a Sci-Fi version of a modern Jet. I've been there, done that many times: Eidos Joint Strike Fighter Novalogic F22: ... and many more Fun games
