Comments on the New Crew for the Supercarrier Module
Joch1955 replied to Bonz's topic in DCS: Supercarrier
i have done some landing with the F18 and F14 today. in all cases, they directed me to empty slots forward of the island, so seems to be mission specific. I agree this was done mostly as traffic control for MP players. -
well no you and Hippo are missing the point. The DCS newsletter announcing this update said expressly that the new deck crew would be removed from the Stennis for technical reasons and that this was “temporary” until they come up with a fix, so this is not a quality control issue.

I have no patience for these threads. The Devs release a great new feature which really adds to the atmosphere and immersiveness of the Super Carrier and is COOL and all some players can post about is that: 1) it is not free or 2) that they will have to update existing missions. The answer is simple: 1) you want to have access to the Super Carrier features? Easy, buy it. 2)you don’t want to have to update existing missions? Easy, don’t, no one is forcing you to. Simple.

I have been doing some quick taxi, launches and landings with the F/A-18 and F-14. The new SC Deck Crew is very nice and works well in SP in both the single and instant action missions I tried. The necessary instructions appear on screen and an icon appears on top of the plane director you are supposed to take instructions from, all very intuitive and easy to follow. It is a very nice addition and immersive.

I had a similar issue in the past. Other things you can try: 1. In WMR settings, there are two settings for “input switching”, manual and automatic, try switching them; 2. Unless you use it, make sure the G2 microphone is switched off in WMR. The speech recognition software can cause some weird results in DCS; and 3. When you start DCS, make sure the mouse cursor is in the middle of your screen.
-
As I recall, this happens when the mouse moves out of the game, make sure you have the “keep mouse confined to game window” checked which I believe is in the VR settings. This should resolve your issue.

Yes, it is easier to just program in DCS directly. Nice thing is that some planes like the F/A-18 already have presets preloaded. DCS also usually has all the possible keypresses/axis available to be programmed and never had any issues assigning what I want to my Winwing Orion 2 which has more buttons/axis than I have been able to use. Another nice thing is that many axis/sliders/switches can be programmed as buttons or axis which makes it easier when you fly a lot of different planes.

My understanding is that the MSFFB base is to simulate “force sensing” like in the F16. I have the regular base with the default springs and it works perfectly for most aircrafts, tension is in the middle I would say, not too soft or too hard.
-
Yes, the strike ace throttle grip also has a motor. The F/A-18 style throttle grip which I have does not.
-
I had the same issue, you have to keep the Sim app running in the background for the vibration to work. I also enabled ‘force feedback’ in game, although I have not checked if it is actually needed.

All good points, also a good practice is to download an available win 11 23H2 ISO file and save on an USB stick as a “just in case” backup.

12600k or 5700x3d or 5900x for Quest 3, 4070s and 40GB DDR4.
Joch1955 replied to Mosencev's topic in Virtual Reality
The performance difference between a 5800x3d and 5700x3d in DCS will be small and the price can’t be beat. Here is a very good overview in Tom’s Hardware. Performance of both CPUs is exceptional in MS flight simulator. Performance in DCS should be similar: https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/cpus/amd-ryzen-7-5700x3d-cpu-review/2 -
Depending on your windows settings, you may be able to roll back to 23H2. You only lose WMR if you update to 24H2. Different methods are available if you Google them. A lot of us are sticking with 23H2 to keep functional headsets, I have a Reverb G2.

I have a 5800x3d, it is still one of the best performing gaming CPU and performance in DCS is great. Performance of the 5700x3d is only slightly inferior. 5700x3d chips are essentially the same as the 5800x3d. If you already have a AM4 board, it is a no brainer upgrade. if you have to buy a new MB though, I would look at the new AM5 boards and the newer x3d CPUs. The AM4 socket is dead. -
fa18c external lighting - strobes / possition lights
Joch1955 replied to Ghostmaker's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
Yes, the exterior light switch turns them on/off and the position/formation knobs control the brightness. -
Nvidia quadro K6000? That is probably the problem right there. I don’t know if it has the power to run a VR headset.

So couple of questions/comments: 1. Is you game a STEAM or DCS instal? Either way, make sure your game is fully updated and run the repair utility. 2. If you are using any shortcuts with command line parameters, delete them. Command line parameters are no longer required. 3. Do not update drivers or use Mbucchia’s open XR toolkit for now. First thing is to get you up and running. 4. If you do not have it, instal the MS APP “ Open XR tools for WMR”. This has some required settings for WMR. Link: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9n5cvvl23qbt?hl=en-US&gl=US Post when you are done and we can move on to next steps.

I have a HP G2 as well. Back to basics: 1. Start WMR first and make sure it works and you see the “home” when you put on your headset; 2. Start DCS from launcher. Make sure it is set to “VR” (i.e. guy with HMD) and not 2D (i.e. monitor Icon). You will automatically start in VR and should be good to go. Note this is multi-thread with Open XR. On the hand controllers, they do work after a fashion, but not as precise as I like and awkward to use. DCS was obviously not designed to use the controllers. I just use the mouse now, easier to use and more precise.

Trying to get optimal graphic settings for SP and MP?
Joch1955 replied to Gil80's topic in Virtual Reality
The texture setting is central. I have a 3070ti with 8GB of VRAM and with terrains textures/textures set to “high”, the game will often use up all the VRAM which will kill my FPS. This is an issue especially with the F-14 on the Syria and Afghanistan map. With terrain textures set to “low” and other textures to “medium”, total VRAM usage in the included single and instant action missions drops to 5-6 GB for the F-14 and 4-5 for the F/A-18 even on Syria and Afghanistan. The visual quality difference between low and high textures is barely noticeable. -
As long as you have the correct AOA and a 2.5-3 degree glide slope, it will land very gently and no need to flare. One mistake players often seem to make is coming in too steeply at 5+ degree which can be problematic. If you find your glide slope is too steep on final approach, it is often easy to fix without aborting your approach. The key to an easy landing, whether on land or a CV, is following the correct procedure. Also when I land at an airbase, I will open my speedbrake as soon as I touchdown, it really helps to stop the plane quickly.

I have a 3070ti 8GB which actually works very well in DCS with my 5800x3d, but I have been looking at potentially upgrading. The horsepower of the 3070 is fine, but 8 GB of VRAM is really borderline for DCS. I have to play with low/medium terrain textures on the Syria/Afghanistan maps, otherwise I can bust the VRAM limit and FPS craters. Thankfully, the visual difference between low and high textures is hard to notice. Ideally, you need a card with 16+ GB of VRAM to future proof performance for another 2-3 years. I have switched often between AMD and NVIDIA over the years, but now only stick with NVIDIA. The hardware of AMD cards looks good on paper, but always seem to fall short in terms of driver performance, especially in VR. I have a reverb G2. Of course YMMV. so looking at the upgrade field in fall 2024, there are two options: Option 1: wait for the 5xxx series which should start coming out in two months. Historically, performance always goes up a step with each generation. My 3070 beats the 2080ti. A 4070 super beats a 3080 and the new 5070s should beat the 4080. But…specs that have been leaked so far do not hint at a serious performance increase, prices will probably be higher than the comparable 4xxx series and watt’s requirements would be higher which may force me to also upgrade my PSU ( currently 850w). Option 2: pull the plug now on a 4080 super or a 4070ti super (which is actually just a detuned 4080). Both would offer a good performance upgrade over my existing card, but all are still listed close to their MSRP which has not budged in several months, so there no good deals out there and you can feel that inventory is starting to get tight. my current plan: I have several cards on watchlists on several sites and will buy if there are good deals on Black Friday. Otherwise I will wait for the 5xxx series.
