  1. Here's a mission a friend and myself put together. Flown in 2.1 Nevada, with Deferred Shading off. I love my Viggen!:D Best regards David
  2. A mission in the Viggen, in Nevada 2.1. (Deferred Shading off until the patches fix the glare) The challenge is to remain below 200', ideally below 100' all the way to the target and back. Perfect for the Viggen? Triggers operate if you stray too high! Mission available on DCS User Files shortly. Best regards David
  3. I use a X55 stick and throttle. Use Chuck's guide and the manual from the module. Try and map your X55 as close as the real thing and use in game bindings. Then practise with what you have set up, it's easier to remember than using someone else's mappings. I also have an old Logitech 3d stick plugged in to a spare USB. I use this stick exactly as the Viggen's radar stick, including the TV update. You can assign the radar scrolling to the joystick axis, just like the real thing! There's some great You Tube videos demonstrating some of the weapons procedures. I would try and learn one at a time, untill your proficient with it. My favourite weapon is the stand off cluster dispenser, BK90. Comes in three flavours, anti armour, anti personel and mixed. Fire both together or single launch. With two of these weapons, you can also carry the ECM and dispenser pods on the wing pylons. If you want to try a mission with these, here is a video. You can also down load the mission from DCS User Files and try it for yourself. Johnxxx, Bunyap also have some very detailed videos, however there is no substitute for flying it yourself. But take your time, if it was real training in an O.C.U. it would take months to become a qualified line pilot! If you like fast and low, the Viggen's your beautiful baby!:D Best regards David
  4. Any word on this? Is this in the 2.1 updates? I know the 109/190 do not have mirrors, but the one in the Spit was very handy!
  5. Hello there. The only aircraft I could "test" with the VOR stations was the Mirage. Noticed that the VOR needle will not point to the stations. However with the INS in the Mirage, VOR is redundant anyway. The Hawk VOR is useless. I can't get that module to work properly, even in NTTR. The L39 NDB works well! Noted re the lack of RSBN stations! It's interesting that ED has coded in all the Normandy airfields into the Mig 21. Obviously a purely fictitious scenario! However, if you like to play out a cold war scenario in Normandy, the Mig 21 can be navigated from airfield to airfield and it's great fun! I wonder how many know that the Mig21 has this added feature? In respect of the 109, I saw the ADF gauge on the panel and wondered if it had any function? I think it's real use in WW2 would be limited, however the following would be a possible way it was used. "FuG 28a: Y-Gerät transponder. Based on the Fug17 transceiver with additional components to send the response to the Y-Gerät ground station for the ground station to derive range. Also derived the azimuth signal and displayed the results on the ANF 2 display giving the pilot a left/right command. Operating frequency 24 - 28 MHz. 8 Watts transmit power. The unit also interfaced to the FuG 10 system in the aircraft so that voice communication with the pilot from the ground controllers via the Fug 28a was possible." I was thinking that when you tune your radio to the airfield frequency, perhaps the RDF could be made to work? Thanks again for your work, I know how hard it is to create mods! Best regards David
  6. Whatever you fly, always fly with a wingman. Ideally he watches your tail. If you end up alone, RTB! If flying with AI, better to fly with a flight. As flight leader, use them aggressively. Use the "cover me" radio call as often as you can. What Tomsk says is spot on. Always fight on your terms. WW2 dogfighting is a brutal affair. Avoid being out of altitude, airspeed and ideas! The WW2 DCS aircraft provided so far present certain challenges. They all have weaknesses and strengths. The fun is learning these characteristics in the DCS modules. At the moment, the FW190 has the better armament and the best engine! Just try overstressing it? It doesn't like high g turns, but as has been said, rolls very quickly. The 109 turns very nicely. Those mechanical slats doing their job in the sim. If ED implement the two wing mounted cannons (switch is already in the cockpit), the armament will equal the 190 and give the little fighter a real bite! It will out climb and out dive the current opposition. But with MW boost on, watch the temps! The Mk 9 Spit out turns everything at low altitude, however it's slow and requires that you constantly watch radiator temps! Try climbing after the opposition, on combat boost and she will boil over! The cannons are great weapons, but you have barely 10 seconds of squirts. The Pony I find to be better suited to ground attack. I am not sure it can compete with the 109/190 in a low altitude scrap and I haven't tried it at high altitude, where it was historically one of the best escorts for the B-17's. Ideally the Typhoon and Tempest should be around, but perhaps the Thunderbolt (Jug) may appear at some stage. Tally Ho, good hunting! BTW, if you want a thrill, try some dissimilar air combat in a Mig 21. Those clever devs have built PRMG navigation into every WW2 airfield? Now that also begs the question, will we get a ME 262?
  7. First of all thanks for these Beacons. In the Normandy map, although there a very few modules that can use the NDB's, they appear to work. What I can not get to work are the VOR's. Again there are precious few modules that can utilise the VOR's. However trying out the Mirage VOR nav functions, the VOR's don't seem to work? Given that the L39/Mig 21 use RSBN nav, it would be nice to see those? Even better, the 109 and 190 have Radio Homer dials in the cockpits, I wonder if anyone can get those to work? If indeed they were ever intended to function? Thanks again Cheers.

    Mirage Status

Well put! It's a wonderful aircraft to fly. However, I can not see the HUD in 2.1 with Deferred Shading on? Hopefully ED will fix this at the next update? In 1.56 the Mirage is a joy to fly.:D Best regards David
  9. Yes, I realise this. My wife speaks German and has been chastising me constantly!:smilewink: So long as you can understand the DCS radio calls in German, I have achieved my aim, which was to provide a greater level of immersion in the game. Like I said, this project began with my British Speech mod, mainly just for my own use, since I didn't think the American modern phraseology fitted with a WW2 scenario in Normandy! Anyone can do these mods. All you need is Audacity sound program, which is freeware and time/patience to record about 300 phrases. Best regards. Tally Ho, good hunting. gute Jagd!
  10. Many thanks. I started with a British Mod, just for my own use really, then updated it with a wingman based on Rick Mayall's Lord Flashart in Blackadder.....guys in the US are saying "who...what"? With a few lines from the movie Battle of Britain. So then I decided to implement the German crews, I hope it does help when flying the superb 109 and 190's. Normandy has such great potential!:D Best regards David
  11. As a counterpart to my German Wingmen Speech Mod, I decided to complete the package with the Player as well. Because of the size, they are separate Mods, so you can use them separately or together. Both Mods are JSGME ready. Both speech packs are intended for use in Normandy. If you decide to switch sides, there is also my British Player and Wingman speech pack!:smilewink: This now means you can give orders to your Wingmen in their native language. You can also talk to ATC and your ground crew in German. Here is a demo video. The Mod is available to download from DCS User Files, just search for "herky", or from the link. https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/2700141/ Best regards David
  12. So I did a speech mod for the player, as a counterpart to my German Wingmen Speech mod. Now you can give orders to your German Wingmen in their native language. Here you can see and hear it. If Normandy is Alpha, I cant wait for the finished version! Its gorgeous! Best Regards David
  13. That's fine, got it thanks. And thanks guys for some heads up. I can not get any bombs to release using Carpet Bombing. I will try the other options. Assigning specific targets might work? At least the formations work as per the menu items. Separation is vital. I got them all too close at first and the collisions were aweful to watch! That being said, collisions in WW2 formations were a reality. Also bombs dropping on aircraft that got out of formation! As a "cheat", purely for cinematic effects, I use a target zone and a trigger zone. When/if the B-17's make it over the target, a set number of buildings explode! No where as good as proper bombing, but the visuals are good!:smilewink: Those new explosion effects are rather good!:D Tally Ho!
  14. Yes thanks, got it now. I followed all the instructions here, alas..... Bombers still overfly the target without dropping a single bomb. Still, they look nice and are great for target practise, they don't even shoot back!
  15. I hope this issue gets fixed. The Mig 21 was one of the most exciting modules. Seems like all the cockpits, instruments and HUDs are suffering from incompatibilities with the new 2.1 lighting?
  16. That's the step I don't know how to do. The weapon screen load out is blank and the weight of weapons is 0? Which menu is used to ensure the bomber is fully loaded? Cheers.
  17. In 2.1, with Deferred Shading on, the HUD has a white glare and the symbology can not be read. Turning down the HUD brightness, to the point where the HUD is off, removes the white glare from the HUD optic. Pictures attached. This may be linked to the Mirage HUD bug, the symbology disappears in the glare. regards David
  18. Altitude and speed! In a 190 or 109, with a finger four flight, you should be able to bounce a flight of AI Spits from above! A 109/190 can out dive and out climb a mark 9 Spit. If your attack fails, you can out run them back to base. Don't enter a turning fight with a Spitfire. You will end up out of altitude, airspeed and ideas.:megalol: Just mind you don't blow your own engine!:smilewink: Tally Ho!
  19. That pretty much answers my question! I attacked a 12 aircraft big box and was a bit dismayed to see no return fire. When attacked they all split up and dived in every direction, mostly for the deck? With a 4 ship FW190 flight, the AI wingmen had a field day! What would be nice is some options for the Forts to hold formation and return fire? We should get some more units next week, apparently the flack is arriving!:D
  20. Great thread, I have subscribed since I am in the market for a 1080ti and a Oculus Rift(eventually, don't tell the wife). BTW. My 980 uses just under 4 GB, if it goes over 4 GB VRam use, then I see stutters. I believe most of my performance issues are VRam related! Regards.
  21. I have made some speech packs for both player and wingmen for use in DCS 1.56/2.0/2.1. They are ideal for Normandy and WW2 type combat. Two British voice packs and now a German wingmen pack. https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/2688571/ Just search "herky" on DCS User Files and they are all there. Videos; Best regards David
  22. I decided to have a go at replacing my wingmen with Luftwaffe airmen! :smilewink: The mod should be live soon on User Files, once the moderators have checked it. Just search "herky". Here's a movie of a combat patrol over the beaches. It's prior D-Day, but the route takes us over Gold, Juno, Sword, Omaha and not quite Utah, due to some dogfighting with a pair of Spits!:pilotfly: Cheers David
  23. After my British radio speech mod, I thought I'd have a go at a German wingman mod for the superb 109 and 190. The mod should be active soon, once the moderators have checked it out. Same as for the British mod it's under "herky" in User Files. Here's a short movie of a combat patrol by a flight of 109's. Going from Carpiquet up the coast over what will soon be Gold, Juno, Sword, Omaha and Utah beaches. It's Normandy with Deferred Shading on, with no in game AA or AS. I have a small entry in the NVidia CP, AA x 2, Aniso x 4. Pretty good results once I let the sim rebuild the Saved Games folder:smilewink: Best regards, David
  24. Although I still think the Merlin should last longer than 2 minutes at a boost of 8 in a sea level climb, here are some hair raising figures of what the Merlin is doing in just one second! In that one second, the V-12 Rolls-Royce Merlin engine would have gone through 60 revolutions, with each of the 48 valves slamming open and closed 30 times. The twenty four spark plugs have fired 720 times. Each piston has traveled a total of 60 feet in linear distance at an average speed of 41 miles per hour, with the direction of movement reversing 180° after every 6 inches. Three hundred and sixty power pulses have been transmitted to the crankshaft, making 360 sonic booms as the exhaust gas is expelled from the cylinder with a velocity exceeding the speed of sound. The water pump impeller has spun 90 revolutions, sending 4 gallons of coolant surging through the engine and radiators. The oil pumps have forced 47 fluid ounces, roughly one-third gallon, of oil through the engine, oil cooler, and oil tank, scavenging heat and lubricating the flailing machinery. The supercharger rotor has completed 348 revolutions, its rim spinning at Mach 1, forcing 4.2 pounds or 55 ft³ of ambient air into the combustion chambers under 3 atmospheres of boost pressure. Around 9 fluid ounces of high octane aviation fuel, 7,843 BTUs of energy, has been injected into the carburetor along with 5.3 fluid ounces of methanol/water anti-detonant injection fluid. Perhaps 1/8 fluid ounce of engine oil has been either combusted or blown overboard via the crankcase breather tube. Over 1.65 million foot pounds of work have been done, the equivalent of lifting a station wagon to the top of the Statue of Liberty. In that one second, the hard-running Merlin has turned the propeller through 25 complete revolutions, with each of the blade tips having arced through a distance of 884 feet at a rotational velocity of 0.8 Mach. Fifteen fluid ounces of spray bar water has been atomized and spread across the face of the radiator to accelerate the transfer of waste heat from the cooling system to the atmosphere. The Merlin, no wonder it sounds like a soul in torment? Regards David
  25. Thanks. Yes, I tried to put different "personalities" into each wingman. Your number two is slightly mad! This weekend I will upload a German wingmen pack. You "player" will still speak English, but all 3 wingmen are replying in German! Apparently my northern England accent let's the German vowels out easier?:D Cheers Tally Ho. David
