  1. I was hoping that one of the excellent pilots that did the early demo videos might also make a video showing max performance takeoff over obstacles. I'm interested to see the difference in the two techniques described.
  2. Very cool Cowboy. I am surprised that they let you fly after all those recent strokes. On the other hand who knows what traumas would have occurred with you didn't.
  3. Trim relieves control pressure required to hold an particular flight attitude. For example in high speed forward flight a lot of forward cyclic is required. To relieve that pressure a r/l pilot would push the trimmer button (but not move the control). Since this is a simulator with spring loaded joysticks the trimmer in game allows you to recenter your stick, without changing the helicopter's attitude, to relieve the pressure you would have to hold otherwise. "T" key will activate the trimmer. "LCtl-T" will release any applied trim. Use the control position indicator window (RCtl-Enter) to play with it and observe what it is doing. There are also checkboxes in the Options->Special tab->UH-1 tab for "Enable Rudder Trimmer" and "Central Position Trimmer Mode". The first one if enabled means that when you hit T the rudder position (not just the cyclic) is also trimmed. The Central Position means that the simulator will wait for you to return the joystick (and pedals) to center before accepting any new joystick position information. Again playing with the controls window will show the difference. Basically without Central Position as soon as you hit T you have to quickly recenter to minimize the helicopter from suddenly jumping around. With it you have make sure you can recenter your joystick otherwise you can't regain control. When it is used and how is pilot preference.
  4. Interesting thing happened after I broke about everything in a hard landing, after repair the airspeed indicator wasn't working. Naturally I didn't find this out until I was in the air and had airspeed. So I had to set up a landing with no airspeed info. I set the attitude indicator just above the horizon then concentrated, concentrated, concentrated on the landing point. Keeping the approach angle constant, also keeping it about the same place on the canopy, and carefully judging my approach speed. Best approach I ever made to that time because I was focused outside not on the instruments. Try doing an approach or two staring out the canopy, you find that there are visual cues to your descent rate and speed and occasional glances at the instruments are all that are needed. As Frusheen said use the cyclic to control your airspeed. It is your brake pedal that you are very, very gently applying by keeping the nose just above the horizon. I when I start down the approach (using collective to establish descent) I use the attitude indicator to get the nose a degree or two above the horizon, then note the position of the landing spot on the canopy. If you keep the landing spot in about the same place on the canopy you'll slow nicely (slight corrections with collective changes). Descent is managed with the collective. At the start establish about 500fpm descent, adjust your pitch, then make corrections as you see you are descending too fast or too slowly by observing the aim point. Near the end you will be slowly feeding in almost constant up collective. Of course changes in one control affects the others but for the most part those are very small changes. Just occasional glances at the instruments are required to verify attitude, airspeed, and descent rate are still about right (note that your descent rate should decrease from the initial 500fpm.)
  5. Up collective needs left pedal. Faster airspeed needs less left to right pedal. Might also check that trim is released (lctrl t) and check the input window (rctrl enter). Some missions start out with trimmer engaged.
  6. Well they do call them "Landing Zones" not "Landing Points". Perhaps that was for a reason.
  7. It has been a long time since I've enjoyed a flight sim as much as I've enjoyed UH-1 Huey (and flight sims are about all I play). I have 12 hours logged, about 3 in campaign the rest flying around the patch learning to hover, learning to air taxi, learning to takeoff smoothly, and attempting to learn transition from flight to hover above a predetermined spot. Much of my enjoyment is from my desire to becoming truly proficient and watching my flying abilities improve in small little baby steps rising to the challenge. Each little step noticeable and feels like a victory. I still have a long way to go, but that just means more fun. Thanks again.
  8. Repair works after 6 May patch, almost. After a hard landing (oh no, another ruptured disc in my back) that broke both the roof and nose pitot, the airspeed indicators (pilot's and co-pilot's) did not work after repair.
  9. The skids grinding on concrete should be much louder. Right now if you really pay attention you can hear a slight noise doing a run on at 40+ kts.
  10. Co-pilot kinda freaks me out when I look at him. I expect him to go all Terminator and point a metallic finger probe through my cranium, or suddenly shiver violently and turn into Agent Smith.
  11. Just to elaborate. If you assume that you really fly a straight 30deg line down and linear deceleration, then it looks like this: 300ft / 60kts / 3036fpm (1500fpm average) 200ft / 40kts / 2024fpm 150ft / 30kts / 2508fpm 100ft / 20kts / 1012fpm 50ft / 10kts / 500fpm 25ft / 5kts / 253fpm 0ft / 0kts / 0fpm (hopefully!) A 10deg approach would look like: 300ft / 60kts / 1054fpm 200ft / 40kts / 700fpm 150ft / 30kts / 527fpm 100ft / 20kts / 351fpm 50ft / 10kts / 176fpm 25ft / 5kts / 88fpm 0ft / 0kts / 0fpm
  12. The skids grinding on concrete should be much louder. Right now if you really pay attention you can hear a slight noise doing a run on at 40 kts. During the campaign flight when the commander said that redhead is cute, I actually looked around. Both sad and disappointing.
  13. Can these files be added to the User Files section of the DCS website? And a UH-1 Huey Aircraft filter added. DCS has done this in the past when missions were broken.
  14. I've notice the ball for the turn coordinator is off-centered on setting on the ground and in hover. I assume therefore that it is rotated slightly to compensate for the slight deck angle when in straight and level flight. Is this correct? When transitioning to/from hover when do you believe the ball and when do you just use the nose position and eyeball on the ground track? Third question on that jumpy little guy. When rolling into a turn a little opposite pedal seems to be required to keep it centered, then once established in bank angle give it the usual boot into the turn. Is this correct? Am I just obsessing on trying to dance in coordination?
  15. Maybe I'm not doing it right but descents from high altitude (1000ft+) cruise flight seem to be easier if you dial back the throttle some, otherwise the rotor over speeds.
  16. Wikipedia says over 16000 UH-1s have been produced. Wonder how many are still intact after the last couple of days?
  17. Trouble hovering? Watch this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=-URVYxyIww4 Then watch it again while following on your controls. Then watch it again and notice where he is looking (hint it's not down). Helps to look at distant point and use peripheral vision to sense motion to be corrected. Strange thing happened to me a one point last night, I just thought ' I want to move over there' and it did with out really thinking about the inputs the helicopter just kinda went where I wanted it to go. Of course with all the other random movements I was making it may have been inevitable.
  18. Someone pointed out to me yesterday that for landing if you hold the nose just a little above the horizon (refer to attitude indicator) and adjust collective for your glide(?) path, the Huey will slow nicely and give you a nice approach to your hover point.
  19. I want to move DCS World from the hard drive it is on now to a SSD drive. What is the best way to do this?
  20. Well the Huey didn't agressively try to kill me on the first flight. Think that is mainly due to watching Furia40's video's repeatedly. So major thanks to Furia40 on his excellent training videos.
  21. We're only up to stupid question #22? My I'm slacking off.
  22. This is what I woke up today thinking: "Because it's my birthday, my love, and and I wants it" My precious is here! Anoint me Lord of the Ring Vortex.
  23. Do you really expect sound heard on the ground to be the same as in the cockpit?
  24. The very beginning is missing were they are discussing the constant assault by browser refresh requests and a general retreat trying to escape with the Kerbel Space Program.
