  1. The Air Force only built the A10 because the US Army said they would develop their own close air support fixed wing aircraft. That would have sucked budget from the AF, that is worse then battlefield causalities around the pentagon. It has been the AF's illegitimate adopted foster step-child ever since. A fledgling the AF would like to lock in the closet under the steps. But even having to make do with hand-me-downs and lack of support it still has out performed its rivals doing what it was designed to do - Close Air Support with long loiter times and survivability.
  2. Wow, did you even look at the picture. No avionics, no titanium bathtub. Just skin, stiffeners, and GAU-8 all exposed to ground fire from below. Remember that you are not pointing your nose/cannon straight at the target, you have to hold the nose above the target to correct for the drop of the shell. From the target's perspective you are exposing more of your underside. And after the firing run you pull off target, thereby exposing to ground fire most of the underside and therefore the cannon system.
  3. I think you're forgetting the part of the cannon protruding from the nose is just a small part of the GAU-8 system. There are vulnerable hydraulic drive, electrically connections, shell feed and retrieve systems, and finally the huge drum, all setting on the bottom of the airplane. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:GAU-8_in_A-10.jpg Of course all that metal can also be thought of as pilot armor too.
  4. With 1.2.6 patch the AM Radio gives an out of range squeal on channel 150.### . Channel 149.### and 151.### work fine. # = any number. From flight manual: "The VHF/AM (Radio 1) transmits and receives between 116.00 and 151.975 MHz."
  5. 2:05 Gremlin: "These blockbuster bombs don't go off unless you hit them just right."
  6. The MS90451 marking made me wonder, are the bulbs actually tiny incandescent bulbs and not LEDs?
  7. In case you forgot here is my original question: Not really an argument, more a question (only slightly loaded). No definitely a question, I see a question mark at the end. I've plenty of experience with other games and simulators where it FPS doesn't make it nearly unplayable and I see significant overlap and only relatively small % differences in single core scores looking at a site using a different benchmark. Your "you hardware sucks" comments don't really help now, and certainly hasn't helped fix the problem in the past. Maybe, just maybe, you also would begin to question that it's something on ED's side if you weren't so busy defending them despite having no answer to the question. Shoot, maybe ED can just try a trial version of a different compiler and see if makes a difference.
  8. OK, What have you got in your pocketsess?
  9. Actually I started it as a question about compilers. Mainly from my frustration about AMD framerate in DCS when other games I play run great. You think ED would notice their customers probing and autopysing every file in hope of finding the one line that says AMD_cycle_abduction_mode = 1; Seemingly no acknowledgment from ED that a problem exists despite years of customer posts. Without that acknowledgment I have no hope that the vaunted EDGE will bring any relief. Interesting tidbits from many knowledgable people, from but NO answer from those who actually know. The truth is out there (oh no conspiracy theory time).
  10. Does he have a white cat in his lap to pet, and a good evil laugh too. "No, Mr. AMD user, I expect you to die (to frame rate related issues)."
  11. Ask a simple question and discussion flushes right back down the 'it's your hardware' hole.
  12. I'm very frustrated with my frame rate on my fairly fast AMD based machine and rather then post my components here and have another round of go update this, that hardware is so last quarter, and "have you tried turning everthing down to 8 bit and running a Nintendo emulator?" I'd thought I would ask a simple question since so many people with AMD hardware seem to have problems and some observations of oddities of frame rate and hardware usage monitoring. Does DCS use a compiler that has AMD optimizations enabled or just Intel (or worse yet the Intel compilers)? If not, could DCS try a beta with an AMD executable please!
  13. Only tool required is a phillips head screw driver. Turn pedals over and unscrew all the screws.

  15. Do a quick check that in Options->Controls Tab->A-10C->Axis commands that only Warthog axes are assigned to the appropriate control. You shouldn't have axis from 2 different controllers assigned to the same input.
  16. I hope wing tip condensation vortices are weather dependent. If they occur every time you hit a pre-ordained g level, despite the moisture content of the air they become rather boring and cliche. To put it another way the moisture content and temperature of the air dictates how much pressure drop will cause condensation. So landing in Florida on a humid day (redundant) after a thunderstorm has dropped the temperature and raised humidity to 99.999% you will probably get vortices at 1g when slow on final coming off both wingtips and flap edges. In air that has dumped all of its moisture trying to climb over the Sierra Nevadas then adiabatically compressed to high temp coming back down isn't going to generate any vortices no matter how many g's you pull.
  17. Back when my Cougar was in a very warm room I would sometimes wear a golf glove. Cheap, easy to find and only needed a glove on my right hand.
  18. Thanks for your advice. Think I'll just continue to use the flying style I'm comfortable with and ask for this somewhat logical change.
  19. It would be nice if hitting Trimmer Reset would override having to return the stick to center, and immediately return control to the stick, after pushing Trimmer switch with central position trimmer mode option selected. e.g., Flying along maneuvering to line up a landing and I accidentally hit the trimmer switch, after a good 'duh' (actually a more expressive exclamation) I hit the trimmer reset switch. Normally I really like the "Central Position Trimmer Mode" option but in this case I left little ripples in the water before I realized that even though I had released the trimmer I had to return the stick to center. Since the central position trimmer mode is an adaptation to make pc simulation hardware more workable there is no loss of realism to override it if the trimmer release overrides it.
  20. Is there a way to re-arm with empty external fuel tanks?
  21. Think this is what you are looking for: Cougar World CH pedal mod
  22. Is the Thrustmaster TARGET software capable of detecting which DCS module you are flying? i.e. A10C, UH-1, P-51D etc.
  23. If they are given a unique ID (embedded in the device's firmware by manufacturer) using two sticks should be fine. The unique IDs allow the computer to remember what is assigned to each stick. If they don't have unique IDs then there can be confusion of assignments after a reboot or unplugging and replugging a stick. I have two Thrustmaster T160000 and for some reason TM didn't give them unique IDs. I haven't tried running them both at the same time though.
  24. I got to question the realism of declaring an emergency while waiting to takeoff.
