Didn't think of that! I'll try using a bit of speed brakes as well. The initial approach to the tanker isn't a problem for me. It's the part after the connection is made that needs more training. Actually, I've gotten pretty good at recovering after a disconnect or if the boom operator decides to sabotage my connection attempt and hits me with the boom. I've noticed a couple of aspects of aerial refueling that I should train on: -formation flying with the tanker: I'm going to try flying in formation with it withouth asking for fuel, so the boom won't be in my way. This way, I might learn how to maintain my position relative to the tanker better. It would also teach me to watch the tanker and not the boom. If I can do this, then I might be able to ignore the boom when I'm actually trying to refuel. -Speed changes: Learning to not observe speed changes by the airspeed indicator, but by the relative speed to the tanker (visually). -Throttle: Getting to know my throttle: Learning to know how much I need to move my throttle to increase/decrease airspeed by 1/10th of a knot. This would have to be measured visually, though.

You're right about the 75-100% range of the stick, so I'll try tweaking that a little bit more. Airspeed and trim are the most difficult aspects for me. It's hard to fly formation with the tanker when it steadily decreases speed while refueling (a couple of knots, enough to throw me off :) ), and I can never get that trim set for the correct speed. It always ends up a little high or a little low. Flying in formation is also very difficult because of the canopy frame (or what you call it) blocking the view. Holding a set speed is surprisingly hard to do. Especially after making contact. I guess that's just a matter of practice, though, and getting used to how the connection itself affects your airspeed. Well, I'll just continue practicing. I just managed to stay connected for a full 10 seconds, and I never managed that before :)! PS: ED, I still want a sober boom operator!

These medals are pointless! I just got a medal that's only awarded to personnel who have served in the armed forces (of Norway) for 25 years. Right... I have 29 flying hours in game... I'm not saying that it should wait and give it to me when I have 25 years flying time :), I'd just like the medals to be less random...

If you have on-board sound, you should just try it and see how it goes. In any case, spending lots of money on a sound card is a waste, if you ask me. You can get plenty of cheap sound cards that provide excellent sound for gaming. Of course, if you're used to very high-end sound, your standards might be higher than mine :). I have a SteelSeries Siberia v2 USB sound card and head set.

Little green circles-Shell impact points

Do report back :)! -
I remember when I had huge difficulties refueling in Falcon 4. Then I got a Saitek X-45, and suddenly it was, well, not a piece of cake, but I was able to refuel with a maximum of two disconnects, so that was great. Now I'm having the same difficulties with the A-10, but buying a HOTAS Warthog didn't help much. Damn, this is hard! Someone, please tell me refueling is easier in real life ... Edit: By the way, what would the realistic speed and altitude of a tanker on station be?

I'm not, so far, although it's only been six hours since I picked it up at the post office :). -

That's EXACTLY what I just thought about :)! So my HOTAS seems to be ok (for now!). Let's hope it lasts... -

Phew! Can anyone else confirm this? -

Oh! My! God! I installed the new drivers, plugged it in, updated the firmware and started DCS:A-10C. Set up everything in a hurry, and ended up just flying around in Georgia for 1,5 hours ! This thing is awesome! I only have one question about the speed brake switch (maybe this is the thing that's faulty on my Warthog...); When clicked to the forward position, it stays there when released, but when I click it back, it snaps back to the center position when released. Is it supposed to be like this, or is there something wrong with the switch?

AI won't land where I tell them to...
Ptroinks replied to Ptroinks's topic in User Created Missions General
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Very nice! The runway is long enough. I think I figured out what caused them to divert. There's plenty of action going on around that airport before the flag is set that's supposed to make them land there, but if any parts of enemy aircraft that's been shot down ends up on the taxiways (even remote ones not needed unless an aircraft HAS to park at a specific spot.), the friendly AI refuses to land there. I'm talking about pieces big enough to cause them to burn on the ground after impact (a wing or a tail). I guess if the piece ends up on a runway, it would be the same thing, and that would be more realistic. The taxiway that was hit by debris, was not needed for these aircraft, btw. It was a taxiway leading to some aircraft shelters. Not anywhere a transport plane would want to go. They could have landed and taxied to parking without hitting anything. So, if anything hits any part of the runway, taxiways or parking areas, friendly aircraft are diverted. BTW, the rest of that Su-25 impacted on the grass between the runway and a taxiway. It wasn't close to either, but it still might be a factor. Another factor could be that the ejected pilot parachuted down within the airport area, so that might make the game think that it was "contested" and not "friendly". -
AI won't land where I tell them to...
Ptroinks replied to Ptroinks's topic in User Created Missions General
I tried adding an extra waypoint between the holding wp and the landing wp, but that didn't work either. I'm going to try that RTB at bingo option. I have plenty of enemy ground forces at the enemy airport they are trying to land at, so the red coalition definately has that one :). Sometimes I run the mission, one of the Su-25s even tries to land at the airport I'm taking off from (plenty of friendly ground units there). A Hawk site at the airport takes him out, though... ED, please fix the AI, it's driving me insane! -
This has probably been answered before, but I couldn't find any posts about it. I'm making a mission where I have 1 C-130 and 1 C-17 set to fly to a waypoint and orbit there until a flag is set. When the flag is on, they are supposed to fly to an airfield and land there. Somehow they refuse to do this. When the flag is set, I just hear them say "RTB" over the radio and then fly to a random (even enemy) airport and land there (or get shot down by SAMs trying...). Is there a way I can actually get them to land at the assigned airfield? In that mission I also have a flight of 3 Su-25s that I've set to attack some targets. My problem is that when they are approaching their targets, one of the Su-25s turns away and flies away for about 10nm., and then turns back to attack. The other two Su-25s are doing what they're supposed to. What's causing the last one to do this?

Why is my 9 line a 12 line? (not a lat/long)
Ptroinks replied to RichardG's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I think I had the same problem as you (if it's the 37T/38T thing). When you get the coordinates from AFAC, BEFORE you punch them in, look at the CDU line above the one displaying the UTM coordinates. That's the grid reference. If it says 37T, change it to 38T or vice versa. THEN you can enter the coordinates from AFAC. You can enter the UTM grid reference after the AFAC coordinates, of course, but when you have a coordinate set, and then change the grid reference, the coordinate gets erased so you'll have to type them in over again (hope you understood all that. My english isn't that good...). Grid ref. first, then AFAC coords! -
Former Soviet SAM systems, Desert Storm and SEAD.
Ptroinks replied to Ptroinks's topic in Military and Aviation
Oh, I didn't realise that! Anyway, I didn't see any agendas in the article I posted (as you have pointed out). It's basically just qualified observations. I, for one, didn't know that the F4 was so widely used for SEAD missions during DS. -
It's a Super Bug!

Ptroinks replied to Ptroinks's topic in Military and Aviation
Huh? -
This may be a general Saitek issue, then. I have that problem with my Pro Flight Yoke (not used for A-10 flying ;) ), and I have to do the same thing to fix it (temporarily, that is).

I found this article when searching for some data on SAM deployment, and it was very interesting! It describes in some detail former Soviet SAM systems, the Iraqi IADS in which they were used, and how the U.S. and its allies defeated them. Lots in here I didn't know! The link is to the first part. Links to parts 2 and 3 can be found on that web page. http://www.sci.fi/~fta/storm-01.htm PS: Sorry if this is a repost...

A-10 C - tips & tricks collection gathered in one PDF
Ptroinks replied to hreich's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Maybe you could add a tutorial on how to set Mk82AIR bombs to "slick" mode to your list. I know it can be found on the forums, but it would be a nice addition to your tips&tricks guide... -
If the next addition to DCS is an aircraft like the F/A-18, the theater will have to be considerably larger than what we have in the A-10! I miss the really long missions in F4 where you HAD to refuel to get back to base :). 1.5 hrs. of flying with only 5 minutes of combat may sound boring, but I really enjoyed that :). Of course, "flying" doesn't just mean flying straight at angels 30, but NOE at night!

Thrustmaster Warthog Joystick-Button Issue
Ptroinks replied to Gruman's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I just ordered my TM 'hog today, but I am very, very, very anxious about whether I get a fully functional one, or one with issues like what I read (too many) about here on the forum :(. But I guess knowing that there are issues with it prepares me somewhat. I'm glad I have a backup-stick (the one I'm using now). It's funny how things can either be well made on the outside OR the inside, but not both, and it's extremely frustrating! Saitek seems to have it the other way around, in my view. I have had issues with Saitek products, but nothing big. Has it become impossible to make something that just works?
