  1. The best time to use it is after you're already discovered in BVR, otherwise it's a big "Kill Me" sign. Didn't know that about the locking gate on jamming targets though, I never even pressed lock until it was inside... haha As far as the loadout goes, I usually take 2 R-60 and 2 R-3R. I thought about taking the double racks, but my R-3Rs fall off all the time from maneuvering anyway (INCREDIBLY annoying), so I doubt the chances of a double rack staying on the aircraft for me, plus I really never find myself in a dogfight at all, usually it's R-3R and goodnight. Most of the time I only launch one and see how it explodes, my reasoning is that if it does hit then he's either going to be dead or so injured he may as well be dead, leaving me with another shot if needed on someone else.
  2. Of course it's not a modern-day sidewinder. The videos shown really don't show te bandit doing any evasive maneuvers though, going back to what I said about needing to manuever as well as use countermeasures in order to defeat a missile (which I've found that 90% of players don't know how to do).
  3. But even with that video, the countermeasures weren't deployed between the missile and the aircraft, but off to the side, so the missile is still likely to hit. It takes a pretty good reflex time in order to defeat a MiG-21 shot because of the short distance and high speed of the missiles Not true, the R-3R is a medium-to-late Vietnam era copy of the AIM-9.
  4. No clue, but I usually don't fire until I'm in good range, kinda like not firing an AMRAAM at 15nm. Besides, chaff is useless if you don't manuever when using it.
  5. So far I could probably count on one hand the amount of R-3Rs that missed on one hand, and that includes the ones I fired with a bad solution. The next few days is going to be rough, have to get the house ready for a graduation party and write papers... Going to go through withdraw
  6. I'm still used to the A-10, old habits die hard! I just like how quickly I reaquire the target and fire, much better looking than done other kills.
  7. When you can see the missile has missing textures you know you're in for pain.
  8. Not a bad flight today with lucien. Overall we went 1:2 trying out new tactics. Also need to figure out how to record skype audio alongside the game...
  9. Just a group 10 fishbed in a big delta formation would be awesome.... Until 1 F-15 takes all of us out in 1 volley! Jk, we would be pretty tough. The inverted T is okay in terms of altitude of the Enemy, but in all reality it doesn't do anything for us. It's fairly uncommon to see a regular T. Designers had too much vodka when building I think... It would be much better if we just had the launch tone with a solid light in the direction of the radar emissions. Something so simple that fails so hard. I agree with the weapons setup before entering the AO, makes life much easier. Knowing how the RWR operates is a bonus, I've used the blind zones a few times to help find enemies. Doesn't the P-51 have a radar warning system? Obviously not advanced my any means, but in pretty sure it had that annoying bell and light to the left of the gunsight controls.
  10. He definitely wasn't any lower, he would have been below the ground in that case. The last ping I had and was able to verify was 25km, which was about 30s before this. He dropped off the radar and I was working it to get him back on, which explains why you could see the jam. Even at a -1.5* tilt, 25km distance can see 423.7m below you, or roughly 1,271' below your antenna, in which I was well below that altitude, so ground would take its place. Alternatively, he had to just be above 5000m (~16,000ft) to be out of my 15* up angle, which is pretty standard. Didn't think about the alternative until after I disengaged.
  11. These were about half a second apart. Side note, didn't know MSI Afterburner includes screen recording software. Works great!
  12. I was on the deck. I'm pretty sure they were too high for the radar, as I could only get jamming signals, no target when the filter was on
  13. Couldn't choose which enemy I wanted to take out, kept switching between them, then both drop off the radar.... Decide to RTB, as I'm 180nm from home and 1500L of fuel. I have about 20nm left when I hear the tone and evade 2 AMRAAMs.... and then get smacked by an AIM-9 a few minutes later.
  14. Ah, I was thinking it had ranging information as well... Dang. That instant action F-4 has really been feeling the pain tonight. The F-86 turned me into a fairly competent dogfighter
  15. I changed my software and went in the instant action dogfight against the F-4 to test this claim. Surprisingly, my controller didn't flicker off, and with emergency afterburner on I EASILY out-turned the F-4 and was on guns in seconds after he was on my 6. Full burner and the yellow AOA arc works pretty well Unfortunately, my controller is doing the same thing again... Every time I try to change the driver Windows decides to auto-install the newest one. I'm going to try a few more things software wise, and have ordered a new PS/2 cable. So frustrating. EDIT: after 2 hours of uninstalling, re-installing, and restarting I managed to finally get the correct drivers installed, and it's working perfectly! Playing with the guns while testing the drivers has lead me to a realization- I have no idea how to use the gunsight in the ASP. I have it on Gun mode, and shooting, however the pipper won't calculate a proper lead for my target. I've tried radar locking, everything. Tips?
  16. That's what I do if I can have the time for it. It really sucks when in a dogfight. I think I've limited the problem to the SST programming software, and downloading an older version of it that people say works better. It only happens when I have a profile loaded, so hopefully this works.
  17. I'm done on Friday. If I can figure out what the deal is with my x52 controller I will be on. The stick will basically act like it loses power for a split second every minute or two, and when it comes back on whatever stick position I had it at will be the new zero setting for it (if I'm pulling up and it flicks off then the pulled setting is neutral and if I neutralize the stick entirely then the aircraft goes into a dive). I think it's the programming software, but who knows. It was working 100% before I rebuilt my PC.
  18. Most of us use the R-60M. It's the most agile IR missile the MiG-21 can handle at the expense of stopping power. If the first one doesn't kill, which happens from time to time, either launch another one or just go guns on the limping enemy. Works best against fighters I must say. If you're going up against bigger aircraft use the R-13M1, much more powerful, slightly longer range, just slightly less maneuverable.
  19. REALLY making me want to upgrade my graphics card right now... haha Let's turn this discussion to tactics to try to brainstorm a bit here. We all know that solo it's really about sticking in the weeds and ambushing, how about group tactics?
  20. True story. After grouping up together with 2 random MiG-21s we formed a four-ship... Which was discovered quickly by an enemy full of F-15s and SU-27s. After some quick trash talk, we then found out it was 3 of them vs 4 of us, and the kill ratio ended 1:1, with one of each team going down as the 2 randoms that came with us bailed. I went low in a valley, fought my awful Saitek x52 drivers, and found an SU-27. He was close, so I quickly locked him and shot a missile in order to try a new strategy and get him on the defensive as he hears a missile coming his way. Must of scared him off, as he tried to RTB, in which I managed to get into firing range after a few minutes of racing after him. Launched my second R-3R and a few seconds later I see a SU-27 with one wing spinning out of control. MiG-21 can really hold its own in terms of speed. I kept mentioning the flopping fish.... Makes me laugh every time I think of that. Send me a PM and we can schedule when we are on. A school of fish(beds) is a group that can be very, very sneaky! ALSO What do you use for recording your gameplay? I tried using FRAPS real-time but it eats about 10-20fps, and I absolutely hate the replay tool because of how slow it is...
  21. Many jets can be started with battery power. It's more common to have a separate jet engine (APU) to start, however battery starts are not uncommon. The Cessna CJ series of corporate jets is just one example that comes to mind.
  22. How do you guys usually visually detect enemies? I seem to be having a tougher time keeping an eye on him within a few miles... Was in 2 turning fights against an F-15 yesterday, lost both. Evaded the AIM-9s, but was defeated by guns. I just couldn't keep the energy high enough to change the fight, and ont he second dogfight I made a mistake and turned the wrong direction on the 5th cross of scissors.
  23. Did you try to home on the jammer? Just lock up the jammer and launch. You don't have distance information, so just try to estimate distance as best as you can, or use AWACs.
  24. Splashed a bandit on the 104th, then about 15s later I froze. I was flying the MiG-21
  25. Honestly, I would completely disregard AOA altogether when it comes to landing in the MiG-21. AOA is very important when operating near stall, such as pulling G and flying slowly, however without the AOA Indexer like in most aircraft to tell you the your optimal speed for landing in relation to your speed. For example, you could be flying 8 degree AOA at 290kph or 350kph and have would have drastically different descent rates. Personally, what I do until I can learn the sight picture for the flare is come over the threshold at 320-330kph, and watch the vertical speed to keep it below 2m/s (1m/s or less is my goal) and you could easily land at nearly any weight. You burn up a little more runway, however with the parachute you will be fine. Easily touchdown within the first 3000ft though. Keep power in until your wheels touch, then once they do cut power and hold the nose off to avoid smashing your nose into the ground.
