  1. With external stores it's recommended to land with no more than 500L of fuel remaining. Without the recommendation is 700L
  2. You could pretty easily carry the drop tank to 12,000m, I've done it before, it just takes forever. I haven't tested your configuration, but I would assume the max zoom climb to be around 20,000m, max cruise around 14,000m, and max mach around 11,000m
  3. What I normally do is climb to about 8,000m, accelerate, climb to 12,000m, accelerate to m2.05, then pitch for a 45* climb. You can get it up to about 25,000m or so if I remember correctly. Don't worry about fuel, you don't burn anything really at those altitudes, and your engine will flame out anyway because of the altitude. The F-4 that climbed to 95,000ft or whatever accelerated to max speed at 25,000ft, then pitched for 45* so that's what I based my trial on. EDIT: Re-tried this method to see if I remembered correct or not. It goes pretty high. 88,662ft (27,024m) This is for a fun, max zoom-climb though. I'm not sure the actual max cruising altitudes, but the best altitude for maximum speed is about 12,350m according to my experiences.

  6. I don't know how you guys get kills with R60Ms past like 2km. I must get ones with dud motors R-3Rs can strike effectively at about 7km head on, 2-3km from behind I've found.

  8. maybe one day I'll get bored and make approach plates for categories like in real life. I instruct in the States, so don't know much about regs or approaches out of country. Thanks for the info though!

  10. 300m seems wayyyyyyyyy high, but everything in the manuals about the MiG is very, very cautious (such as not exceeding 19* AOA). Not true about the 2 ground stations. This is an NDB approach to a local airport. I haven't even been in an aircraft that has 2 ADFs. As you can see, only one NDB is used (Flory). The VOR at the top (Salina, SLN VOR) is only used for the missed approach. To fly this without DME, you simply start a timer after passage of the NDB, and once your time's up and you don't see the runway you go missed. You can see this time chart on the bottom left of the approach plate. Ground speed is on top, time below.

  12. The issue in the sim is that we do not have approach plates. IRL, ILS approaches (PRMG for the MiG-21) take you down to 200' on average, however CAT III ILS can land you with 0 vis. NDB approaches would normally take you down to about 500'. These minimums differ IRL due to technical limitations and objects interfering with "safe" airspace, such as towers, etc that would require the minimums to be raised.
  13. The norm intercept angle for radials is 45* until the course needle comes alive, then gradually decreases as the course deflection decreases until captured.
  14. Things I like: Evading 3 AIM-120s, and hearing the sonic boom as they pathetically pass by. Things I don't like: An enemy shooting a friendly at close range with an AIM-120, only to have it obviously miss the friendly and go pitbull on me, 4 miles away. Sad day.
  15. It looks like I keep my reticle in MSL mode instead If gyro, so the inner scale works in that situation according to the RL manual. I don't know why the other way isn't working, but I'd suggest staying in MSL mode, as it's very accurate for me.
  16. When I set wingspan in the inner scale in auto mode it works perfectly. Not sure that's the correct way, however I get the results I need.

  20. That's not true. The reason you compute lead in the first place is for range and forces effecting the aircraft in flight. Since range is 300m, all we compute is the offset for the G loading. In a left turn such as the one pictured above, you are in a coordinated turn, and as such the bullet will fly through the vertically through the gunfight still because the centripetal force and horizontal component of lift cancel out. In this case, the vertical plane IS the plane of motion. Notice in this graphic how in a coordinated, level turn the vertical lift component cancels out the weight, and the horizontal lift vector cancels out the centripetal force.
  21. Set your pipper to the correct wingspan (12m for the F-4) and you should be ok. I haven't ran into any issues with it.
  22. You endanger your tires at these speeds. You can't land this thing like other aircraft. Keep your speed ~320 over the threshold and aim to touchdown at 1m/s. Once your mains touch, keep the nose off with very subtle back pressure as you reduce throttle to idle. Once your nosewheel is on the ground pop the chute if need be.
  23. Afterburner is engaged at about 95% of your throttle quadrant movement. In real life there will be a detent in the throttle quadrant. You do not need to flip any extra switches to engage the afterburner. The Second Afterburner basically just increases fuel flow further and gives you extra power. Flip the switch on and your normal afterburner will be more powerful. Note that just because the switch is flipped to on doesn't mean the afterburner is on. You can tell the after burner is on in the cockpit by the newly added audio, as well as two green lights on the right vertical annunciator panel (right of the tachometer). In english, one light on the left of it will say "AFB (afterburner)" and the other on the right will say "Nozzle Open." Picture added to help, and the lights are circled in red. Your temperature gauge below your tachometer will have a temp above 650*C. Another way is to look at the engine tachometer itself and you will notice the indicators in the yellow arc. Note that the light at the bottom of the red circle to the left of the radar is for external fuel tanks, and will not show up if you have a full centerline fuel tank and you're afterburning.
  24. I've had nothing but issues when viewing replays. Even at 1x the entire time my aircraft would get stuck in the grass or, due to the extreme low level flying you do in the MiG-21, lawn-dart into the side of mountains. I wish we had a good replay system.
