1. So what I'm understanding from this is, "Yes, the remote compass actually does change with the aircraft orientation, and the flight manual is just plain wrong." Am I correct?
2. To the best of my knowledge, no, not currently. You should be able to rearm using the LALT + ' menu. Also welcome aboard! Let us know if we can help you with anything.
3. Additionally, if you're willing to get close enough, you can boresight the gun and/or rockets and just aim the old-fashioned way. Again, this requires that you get pretty darned close, but if you're clearing out something that doesn't shoot back, this can be fairly effective.
4. My understanding is this: The batteries provide DC power to all DC systems. AC power is supplied through the inverter, which does not power all instruments. I don't know why, but I assume it's related to the capacity of either the inverter or the batteries. The generators power all the AC and DC instruments. They rely on normal rotor RPM. If RPM drops too low, the generators cut out and all those systems go offline. Once RPM comes back up, the power comes back, but you'll have to wait for however long it takes those systems to come back online. Doppler time is ~3min, which sucks. Edit: batteries, not APU. Must be losing my mind.
5. As has been mentioned, illumination flares make night fighting possible, but not easy. If you're carrying the S-8OM, get 5-7km away from target area, pitch back to 30-45° and fire off as many rockets as you'd like (I typically do 2-4 bursts of 2 rockets). Level out, regain control if necessary (she doesn't like pitching up very much), and then wait for an agonizing ~15sec for the flares to light up. The downside to the S-8OMs is their short duration. It's a lot easier to do this in MP if you have a wingman. You can launch rockets every 10sec while he searches and engages, and then trade off. Alternatively, call up an A-10 or a Su-25 to light up the area for you =D With the Shkval, adjust the brightness and contrast. IIRC, RCTL + RSHF + [ or ] and RALT + RSHF + [ or ]. You'd be impressed how well the Shkval works in low-light conditions.
6. Current workaround: Because my stick is getting repaired, I'm using my old TM Cougar along with the TM Warthog throttle. I simply scripted the Cougar to use DX buttons for everything except my 3 PTT buttons. The cougar handles those with the requisite keyboard commands. When I get the stick, until TS is fixed, I plan to do the same, except with TARGET and the TM Warthog stick.
7. Merlin, you're correct in how it operates, but the flight manual says that's not how it should work. Lib: Yes, I also find this very frustrating.
8. According to the manual, yes. I don't know if the NV-friendly formation lights do or not.
9. TS currently doesn't differentiate between different joysticks. I didn't realize that this is a new problem, but it's been brought up on the TS forums and may be addressed in a future patch.
10. I remember that chapter. I was grinning the whole time =D For those who haven't read it yet, Apache is a phenomenal read!
11. I'd hate to be the innocent Shark pilot who comes in a little too fast for a landing on the apron and accidentally overflies the trigger a little too low...
12. Wow, Krymsk is in rough shape! Is that from the 2012 flood?
13. I wish I could post the PMs alphacharlieecho has sent me, but they're PMs. Instead, have a gif that I sent in reply: Also I love this community and I think ED is doing an amazing thing by developing DCS. Life is good =)
14. I find the GOW campaign to be pretty darned difficult in the Toad. Have you hopped online yet? If not, jump into the 104th's air-to-ground server and try one of their missions. They have smaller distinct target groups, and you can collaborate with other pilots, which makes a huge difference. You'll learn fastest when you're flying with other humans instead of AI =) P.S. And don't forget teamspeak!
15. First, simmer down. Explosive anger over your individual desires not being perfectly met won't get you far. Second, join a squad. Seriously, find a squadron that's recruiting and join up. Find one that uses TARS if you want kickass voice communication. There are a number of different squadrons that are active, and they run the gamut from laid-back and casual to hardcore brevity-only. It's on you to find a group, though, and you're going to have to adjust your attitude if you want to find a solid one that will accept you. Seriously, though, join a group and use TARS.
16. You can leave it in outer if you wish. I'd recommend it. Airfields that don't have two markers (e.g. Sochi) typically have their sole marker set to the outer one. Airfields that do have two markers (e.g. Krymsk) have both an outer an and inner, so if you're flying an approach, you'll want to pick the outer first. Here's a thread about flying IFR approaches using the ARK, and I've attached a list of the ARK entries for all the airfields (not mine, but I can't find the thread it's from): Finally, here's a post about tuning the ADF to the many other miscellaneous NDBs located in the game. Hope that helps! Anything unclear or need more detail? ARK scripts for all airports.txt
17. Yes you could, and when I'm rich and famous and I commute to work every day in my surplus Russian Ka-50, that is exactly how I'm going to ditch my empty coffee cup every single morning. Imagine it: hover over the starbucks parking lot at 100m, rappel down using the yet-to-be-modeled sling hook wearing the should-be-modeled cape and goggles, get in line, purchase coffee, then rappel back up. This is how I will commute >=D
18. So true! With sufficient altitude and a proclivity for exceeding the flight envelope, with particular regard to maximum pitch-down, you could manage this with a Vikhr =P Or you could load up a couple of bombs, put yourself in a very precise hover, and then let her rip...
19. I'll put a plug in here for using the "Prepare Mission" mode to build useful info into the ABRIS. I've just started doing this for the VTAG's dedicated server missions. This way, you can pull up pre-made routes to the different ranges instead of having to locate all the WPs individually. You can do the same thing with lines and other data. For example, if you have a mission with a known SA-11 site, you can add in the known dangerous zone on the ABRIS and give the pilots a heads up. This kind of thing could have saved me on more than one occasion =)
20. Remember, if all else fails, you have the ejection seat and they don't =P
21. We've had a few threads about high winds and the Vikhr, especially after the BS2 campaign came out. One option, if you have a strong crosswind, is to manually launch the missiles with the reticle pointing downwind. The wind catches the tail fins and tends to point the missile into the wind.
22. Flanker: I can run DCS off a ramdisk if I really want to eliminate load times, but thanks for the tip =)
23. I thought a company or two made some paid campaigns for the Shark? Isn't there a thread in the Shark forum about that? Regardless, I'm sorry to hear you're dissatisfied, Troutish. The only 2 things I can offer are 1) join a squadron and 2) make some missions. Seriously, join a decent squadron that makes their own missions and fly with them. Get TARS up and running and you'll be having a blast before you know it! And on the second point, you can either walk away in disgust or you can put some time into learning the admittedly limited ME and then start turning out some awesome missions that you and your friends can enjoy. And for what it's worth, you bought a product with a certain number of missions and are now unhappy that more haven't been given to you. Again, you have the opportunity to make your own missions and give them away, or even make money selling them. Also, hasn't ED been adding more missions and campaigns for their other A/C? tl;dr Join a squadron and have fun!
24. Hey Folks. I'm running an i5 (3.6GHz, I think? Can't remember for certain ATM) with a GTX 570 2.5GB. I've never run SLI before, and I'm wondering if it's worth the money and PSU drain to toss a second card in. I'm aware of the limiting nature of VRAM, but I figure 2.5GB is decent for the time being. Oh, and I've got 16GB of DDR3 (1600? Again, I think that's what it's at...) and one 1080p monitor. Basic question: How much do you think I would benefit from a 2nd card in SLI at this point? How long do you think I could get by on that setup before needing to upgrade? And yes, this is subjective. I'm looking for other folks' experiences with SLI and get a feel for how much benefit they've had.
25. It's a good way to burn excess fuel to make the chopper lighter, but other than that, it's only good for starting engines. Idenwen, it's worth noting that, when you lose electrical power, the doppler radar takes ~3min to come back online. Until then, you won't have accurate ground speed indication in the HUD. Oh, and if you try to auto-hover, it'll just turn off your AP channels =D
