Leap Motion looks promising
MACADEMIC replied to Thrakazog's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Leap Motion and DCS World Hi all, Leap Motion Leap Motion was released yesterday and I feel this device could become a gamechanger for us in flight simulations. Imagine yourself in your clickable cockpit, moving your cursor over the screen with hand movements instead of using a mouse, flicking switches, turning knobs, rotating handles with natural gestures, going through your startup sequence that way, using both hands as required and as you would in a real cockpit, and doing just the same in all other phases of flight. No more mouse, no more fumbling on the keyboard for aircraft functions, you'd just do as you would in your cockpit, with the exception of primary flight controls and throttle/prop control, which I believe should remain bound to physical devices. The big question is what level of support/integration by a software developer will be required, so that it will be possible to 'teach' Leap Motion the gestures you wish to use and make them function as desired in the simulation. I'm excited! Please discuss! :pilotfly: MAC -
Great news. Godspeed! MAC

Well Merlin, managed to get myself killed by some enemy AI before I even knew he was there. Need to learn to scan the sky better (how lucky this is just a simulation...) :) Thanks for setting this up, getting better and better! MAC

Hi Merlin, I was flying on your server last night (European time) but (un)fortunately was on my own. :joystick: Reason was that I just got a 'new' stick from ebay, an MS FFB2. Great stick and much better than what I'd had before, but perhaps lucky for me I didn't encounter any opponent because it's all quite new. Looking forward to flying together soon! MAC

MS Sidewinder FFB 2 Question

Okey dokey, will do that! Thanks! MAC -
MS Sidewinder FFB 2 Question
MACADEMIC replied to MACADEMIC's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Thanks, that may have been the problem. It's a bit unnatural for me to keep a tight grip on the stick if not necessary, in real life I flew gliders and mostly only held the stick between thumb and pointer, could fly it very finely like this. Any way to trick the IR sensors? MAC -
Hi all, Just got a used MS Sidewinder FFB2 from ebay today. Using the standard profile for it, with FFB checked on under Misc and Axis swapped according to PeterP's recommendation I saw on the forum. Issue I have is that FFB sometimes cuts out during flight, which of course is not good. Is this a known issue, is there a fix for it, or could there be a problem with my JS? Thanks in advance! MAC

Great pictures, this FW190 looks like in mint condition. Thanks for sharing. What museum was that? MAC

Excellent idea, suggest you also put the standard five line format into the first post of this thread! MAC

Hi, Missed the Flying Legends Server, off to some joyflying on the Virtual Aerobatics Server now (0830GMT). MAC

 Great news about the TS, looking forward. Thanks! MAC

Great Merlin, thanks for getting this ball rolling! MAC

I can understand why the virtual aerobatics team doesn't want weapons on their server, once they allow them chances are high it will be abused and ruin the experience for those whose primary interest is in aerobatics. But, if we kindly ask, perhaps they'd be willing to arrange an airport/designated area for P-51 pilots to do mock dogfighting? MAC
-
Great, looking forward! By the way, I remember there was a P-51 dogfight server a while ago, you were required to install the blue and red team skins. Don't know who ran it and what happened with it though. MAC

I don't think anyone expects a single person to fund the effort 100%. A good start would be if there would be someone motivated and skilled enough to set this up, and beforehand would budget the costs. If enough people can be found who wish to support this idea by making contributions ('memberships' or the like), and funding is assured that way, the project can be realized. Unfortunately I am not such a person, my traveling lifestyle doesn't allow me to set this up, but I'd certainly consider contributing. MAC

Hi guys, I'm all for it, really looking forward to practice Air Combat Maneuvering in the Stang, would already be happy with some mock dogfights without shooting. MAC

artificial horizon-always tilts to a side after start up
MACADEMIC replied to 9.JG27 DavidRed's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
This is actually a very realistic instrument behaviour. The attitude indicator is essentially a gyroscopic instrument driven by a vacuum pump. The gyro needs some time to come up to speed, i.e. aquire the RPM necessary to have it showing the correct position in space. But even so, as LT says, this generation of gyros needs realignment from time to time, but error is usually not as great as you experience right after startup. MAC -
Fantastic animation, would love to have this for all DCS planes! Gives a lot of life to the outside view. MAC

Will have to agree with the OP. The head movement in the opposite direction of the turn effect could be a heritage of car simulations, where this would be appropriate due to the centrifugal forces. Sure it's a nice graphic effect livening up the simulation. Most people drive cars, so they probably can more easily be immersed when shown something they're very familiar with and that's deeply seated in their muscle memory. However I agree it shouldn't be there in a high fidelity flight simulation. In an airplane, all that matters is the total of the load vector, shown in cockpit with that ingeniusly simple slip/skid indicator (the ball in the curved glass). As long as the ball is in the center, flight is 'coordinated' so no side forces occur. Only in a skidded turn (ball showing towards outside of turn) would the body and head have a tendency to move to the outside of the turn, while in a slipped turn (ball on the inside of the turn) to the inside. A very special version of David Bowie's 'Space Oddity'. MAC P.S.: Finally got embedded working.

Friday Update Appreciation Thread
MACADEMIC replied to VincentLaw's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
Absolutely appreciate the updates and open information approach. While I wish more DCS quality models would and could appear faster than announced, it's easy to realize good things are taking their time. EDs strategy makes perfect sense to me, releasing products of reduced depth first, having earnings from them while continuing with development towards DCS fidelity. Win Win for ED and the community. Awesome news, and also awesome change of information policy. Can't wait to see and later fly that bird in DCS! MAC
