It had a newfangled device called a Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS). Last words on the cockpit voice recorder are the GPWS saying, "Pull up! Terrain!" and the captain responding, "Shut up, gringo!” True story. DPS.

I spent over three years in the RAF during the war – that is to say the Cold War – during which time I drank tea, played volley ball and drank more tea. I rose through the ranks to reach the grade of SAC. Computer games (or PCs for that matter) didn’t exist in those days, although many hours were spent gawping at Vulcans and Buccaneers. However, one day I did get a peek at the brand new A-10A ground attack aircraft. The RAF didn’t have any smart weapons back then; bombs were simply attracted to their targets by the force of gravity. I had a ground job, but I did fly on a number of special missions to Guernsey in the Channel Islands in de Havilland Devons. Most RAF aircraft returned from their sorties as little lighter in weight – we always returned home considerably heavier!! It was very hush-hush so don’t mention it to anyone else. Here’s a video on how to avoid hurtling into the ground (CFIT = Controlled Flight into Terrain) whilst flying in cloud. It’s really pitched at FS2004 users, but it also features Lock On explosion effects. It’s 5:47 mins long. If you can’t be bothered watching it, the gist of the lesson is that if the Aural Warning System yells ‘PULL UP, PULL UP’, pull back on the stick and climb to a safe altitude – and probably into the engagement zone of an SA-10!! I was also impressed by When Hogs Fly, so impressed in fact that it features on my web site: Check out the Campaigns button at http://www.dpsflight.com/DPSflightUK.htm I think I downloaded it from http://www.lockonfiles.com/index.php a year or more ago. Some of the missions in the A-10 campaigns that came with Lock On weren't too bad at all; the missions with A-10s doing A-10 sort of stuff like roaming around over a target rich battlefield.

Snomhf, coming up next will be a portrayal of a massive conflict between NATO and WARPAC forces, but this time from the Russian point of view using one of my Su-27 campaigns as a model. I like to keep a fair balance. Yesterday, I took a look at Glowing Amraams video HEAT for inspiration. It’s well worth downloading. Must look into getting Vegas; looks like it does a pretty good job. I also had a play around with Ctrl F11. Is there any way of anchoring it to an active object like an aircraft or a tank? Anyway, good, constructive criticism from this forum. Glowing Amraam, thanks for the tips; if you could give me some pointers about how to achieve non in-game angles that would be great. I spotted the pauses too – after I had rendered the movie down to the wmv file. What a pain. Will try slowing down time if I do another one – guess that would help in those shots were I panned across the instrument panel. I got the message about the music. That’s a tricky area as ones personal taste comes in here (perhaps I haven’t got any!!). I chose the piece because of the mood it evoked: the sense of urgency and the fast tempo. I’ll record something different next time - I know a fellow who plays the bagpipes. Anyway, that was my first movie. Lack of practice, no knowledge of the Su-25T. Had to check the outside view to see what was going on by which time...too late...bang! In the Ctrl R scene I couldn't even find the fuel quantity gauge!! I started with a Stinger MANPAD but it was pretty well wiping me out every time. At least with the AAA I could get to an airfield to complete the movie.

Glad you like the training video. When my bandwidth allowance gives out it is now hosted on Google Video (but much lower res). In order to survive long enough to even fly this mission best just to wait on the runway until the defences around the airfield have taken care of the attackers - then take-off.

Ever wonder what Sochi looks like from the flightdeck of a Boeing? You are about to depart from the Black Sea resort of Sochi (URSS) with a plane full of holidaymakers on their return flight to Krasnoyarsk . The weather is: wind 030/15, temperature 28°C, QNH 995mb. Runway 06 would be ideal – but it’s closed. So you will have to make do with the 2197 metre Rwy 02. Krasnoyarsk Express performance manual says you can do it as you are just below the RTOW of 169,000 lbs. As long as you carry out the short-field take-off technique and make a 10 degree left turn airborne you will clear the ridge and the hill beyond it. Watch out for the block of flats at the end of the runway! Here is a new eight mission campaign for the Su-27. http://www.dpsflight.com/Su27OStur.htm No time is wasted taxiing and taking-off. Each of the missions starts with you already en route to your first target, and deft use of sim acceleration will have you in the thick of the action in just a couple of minutes. If you really want to fly it from off-chocks declassify with Ctrl+SHIFT+D password Motherland and drag your flight to Sochi-Adler AFB and adjust timings as required. I’m still encountering an occasional problem with some static objects not appearing. When you launch each mission use F12 to check that they are visible. If not Esc, close and FLY again. I had to do this four times in mission 6 in order to see all the M-2s. Some of the objectives in the latter ground attack missions will have to be located by the player – and some of the FAC marker rockets are falling hundreds of metres from the targets. If you want to make them easier to find just declassify and assign all the goals in the targeting section of ME. DPS. Operation Sturgeon Autumn 1996.
