Actually I haven't been trimming up for take off at all, unless the game is doing it for me due to the way I set the mission up. Maybe I should read the -1 :)
-
Yeah that is pretty much what I meant. After takeoff I need to jam the stick probably 3/4 forward to keep from breaking pattern altitude while I trim it up. Just seems like a lot, but maybe that's normal for something so light and strong :)

Note I'm not blaming the sim here. I'm sure its accurate, but I'm trying to understand it. Also note that the majority of my sim and real world flight experience up to now is either civilian props or the A-10. I have very little flight time in high performance jets. I am finding with my F5 training that I frequently have to put in a buttload of nose down trim for level flight. It seems very excessive to me. Is this "normal" or am I doing something wrong?

DCS Performance, FPS Drops and Stuttering
agathorn replied to betatrash's topic in Game Performance Bugs
Rolling back to the 425.31 drivers did not fix the problem for me. Still frequent, repeating frame drops for no discernible reason. -
Rift S nose gap - rubber insert is removable!!!

Oh thank you! I didn't now this and in fact just posted on reddit asking how people were dealing with not bing able to peak a your keyboard for flight sims! I'll have to try this tonight. -
DCS Performance, FPS Drops and Stuttering
agathorn replied to betatrash's topic in Game Performance Bugs
I'm having the same problems both in VR and normal. The real kicker is it happens even at the main menu! It's easier for me to see in VR with the Oculus performance overlay up. At the main menu I get a rock solid 80fps (Rift S) but every few seconds it drops down to 25fps then right back up again. In sim, solid 40fps but every few seconds it drop down to 10fps then back up again. And this is doing nothing but sitting on the ground. Even tried holding my head steady so it didn't have to work much. It completely ruins the experience in VR! DCS is on a SSD. Specs are i7-4770k (not overlocked), 32gb RAM, and GX 1080ti. When I get home today I am going to try rolling back the drivers as suggested but I'm not optimistic. This isn't happening in any other games that I play so it seems odd it would be the driver. -
Those random frame drops are driving me nuts. In VR I'm getting a rock solid 40fps except ever minute or two when it plummets to 25fps then climbs back up. And this is still doing nothing but sitting on the runway and holding my head relatively steady.

I moved DCS over to my SSD and then fired up SpeedFan and MSI Afterburner for metrics and started the mission. Turns out I was indeed getting some thermal throttling on the GPU after a couple minutes. I manually increased the fan speed for testing and that eliminated the thermal issue. The FPS is still varying wildly with occasional dips all the way into the 20s but its a lot better than it was. I made a short video if anyone wants to see the numbers.

Here is a copy of the mission file if you want the same. I'm not doing ANY THING just starting it up and sitting there. Free.miz
-
Sorry I don't know what that is. Can you tell me how?
-
Heh yeah no doubt but DCS is huge. Its like half my SSD!
-
I'm moving DCS over to my SSD then I'll do some more testing.
-
In the matter of just a few minutes? Not likely. The CPU is water cooled, and I've never had issues with the GPU before but I will break out the diagnostics. Exiting the mission and restarting it immediately jumps back to 100fps though before starting the same decline.

So I recently upgraded from a Rift to a Rift S and now that I can actually READ the cockpit I want to spend most of my time flying in VR. To that end I started working on tuning my settings to get the right performance. As it is a lot easier to tweak settings outside of VR, I set up a basic F5 test mission in Nevada with no AI planes. Using non-VR m,ode with a 4K monitor, I then boot up and just tweak settings without moving or flying around. The view is fixed. I figure if I have good FPS on a 4k monitor that should be a fairly good proxy. However while doing this I noticed something odd. When I first start up the mission with my current settings, I am getting around 100fps. Pretty solid between about 90-100fps. This however gets lower and lower the longer I let the sim run. And not slowly. Starting around 100fps, within 5 minutes its down to around 50fps! Again, with nothing really changing. I don't even look around. Completely static view. Specs: i7-4770k, GTX 1080ti, 32gb RAM

Semi realistic US training progression in DCS World
agathorn replied to agathorn's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Wow I feel like I opened a bit of a can of worms here. Not my intention. I think the F-5 is a fair stand in for a T-38 even if i isn't quite right as a real trainer being single seat and what not. What I am still unsure of though is how good a stand in it is for a T-46 which the USN uses. I'm not familiar with that Aircraft (I was Air Force so don't have much familiarity with Navy aircraft). I also still don't see a good stand in for a T-6 Texan. I appreciate the comments, but the most suggested Yak really has a very, very different performance profile even if you ignore the origins of the aircraft. So while I appreciate the amount of trainers currently in the sim, most of them are jet trainers (L-39 and C-101 are jet trainers). There really isn't a "high performance" prop trainer. The Yak is far below the T-6 in terms of flight performance, and the Albatros is way above it. Maybe something like a P-51 or Spitfire is actually the closest right now, though both would be way off in terms of technology so that would be a hitch in the learning curve. I appreciate that everyone has their own minds on what aircraft should be included, and at the end of the day all we can do - each and every one of us - is communicate our own desires in a civil manner and let Eagle Dynamics decide what they want to focus on. Belittling one person's choice because it isn't yours isn't very nice. At the end of the day I am only offering my own thoughts on how I think the overall product could be improved. Right now if on wants to follow a semi realistic training regimen, the you essentially need to step out of DCS for the start and go to civilian focused sims. Obviously DCS as a product would benefit from retaining those users as much as possible. And for those who say it's a sim who cares, well some people do. There are many, many players who embrace the study sim aspect and many people who for one reason or another dreamed of flying these aircraft but we denied that opportunity for whatever reason. For some people the training aspect is just important as the end goal, and they want to simulate that progression as much as possible. I served in the US Air Force in an enlisted capacity and always regretted not making the right choices early on in life that would lead me to being able to enter the academy and fly, which was always my dream. Let's try to remember that everyone is unique and has their own views. There isn't any reason to stomp on them just because they may be different from your own. (note: this message was typed up on a Macbook Pro whose keyboard has a unique personality of its own. I apologize if certain characters are missing from words) -
Hi, Lately ED has really been rocking the awesome and iconic US aircraft with the F18, F14, and upcoming F16 (sadly the F15 got sort of left behind) and this has got me thinking that what's missing is a good set of trainers for pilots that want to follow semi realistic progressive flight training. According to wikipedia the CURRENT progression is as follows: USAF track for F16/F15: Primary Flight Training: T-6 Advanced Flight Training: t-38 USN track for F18/F14 (though F14 is discontinued, it was on the same track historically so if it was still flown its safe to assume it would follow this track: Primary Flight Training: T-6 Advanced Flight Training: T-45 Now the F-5E in DCS World already is pretty darned close to the T-38. Close enough that I'd say it's a fair module to use if you wanted to follow this track in your own study. I am not too familiar with the T-45 however, but it looks to b very similar to the T-38 so I'd imagine that an F-5 is a suitable DCS replacement there as well. I'd love to hear some input from people in the know if this is wrong. The T-6 however doesn't really have a DCS equivalent that I can see. As it is used by both branches and by many other air forces around the world as a trainer, I think the T-6 would be a great addition to DCS World some day.

Hi all, I have two monitors on my system, one at a desk and the other is mounted in a sim chair. Is there any way I can configure DCS world to always start up on the secondary monitor instead of the primary one? Right now when I run DCS I have to go to the desk, start it up, go into options turn off full screen, drag the window to about halfway off the monitor then go to the sim chair, get seated and drag the window the rest of the way over, then go back into options and turn fullscreen back on. That is obviously quite a PITA to do every time I want to fly. Some games have an option in the settings for what monitor to use but I couldn't find anything like that in the settings for DCS world.

I was wondering about that. In the A10 I have to sit very far forward in order to be able to properly see the HUD but that leaves me in a position where it is very hard to use half the switches in the cockpit. I've been unable to find a decent position that works for all, though I guess if I sat in a swivel desk chair it would be easier. I use an Obutto though so rotation to reach switches to the side and behind me is nearly impossible.

And yet here I am struggling to get smooth gameplay with a high end machine. Some times these things just baffle me! Win 10x64, 16gb RAM, i7-4770k, 980ti I have pretty much every single setting set to the lowest possible, except textures which I have at high so I can actually be able to read the cockpit labels. But textures shouldn't affect framerate as long as they fit in the vram and they easily do.

I jumped in for a flight last night and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Tracking was a little jittery but frankly it **always** is for me in DCS. In Oculus Home it was still butter smooth.
-
That would be ironic given this update was supposed to make tracking *better*. I have not yet had a chance to fly since this update though, so I can't comment. Hopefully tonight.

Shouldn't it be a requirement that missions submitted for a contest be created for that contest? I mean that is how most places handle contests like this.

No actually it is very important to understand that they Oculus did NOT lose the law suit. There is an important distinction that is being missed by a lot of the press. Yes they had to pay out a large chunk of money, 500 million, but that payout is for breach of NDA because they used footage in the public domain that they were not supposed to, such as in the Kickstarter video. That frankly was very stupid of them to do, but they did and they are totally guilty of it. The important point though is that they were NOT found guilty of stealing technology for VR, or code, or anything like that, hence why the smaller than asked for payout. This is important because it keeps the future of Oculus' business safe and sound.

Good to hear because their DK2 interfaces were pretty crap. Mine still just sit on the shelf unused. The facial interface they made for the DK2 actually changed the profile of the mask and absolutely crushed my nose. With the CV1 does it keep the same profile of the existing interface, just add the padding?
