Putting out feelers, who wants laser cutting services?
MacFevre replied to Devon Custard's topic in Home Cockpits
Just an idea, but have you thought about bezels? I know i could use a set of instrument panel bezels. Especially the main T, and a nice set of eng indicators would be nice, too. -
Putting out feelers, who wants laser cutting services?

Well DC, you know my thoughts. ;) -
I tried to use the rails for my seat. It was out of an old Jetta, I believe. After unsuccessfully trying to remove just the rails, tried to ziz-wheel the entire floor pan out. Still didn't work. Gave up and just put the seat on wood blocks to height. I figure this summer I'd like to make an Aces II. True, not as comfortable, but maybe with enough padding it will make do. For the front, I cut two slits. Removed all the foam between them, then simply pushed the cover material back. I covered both sides generously with seam sealer, so it wouldn't unravel or come apart. If I was really eager to do more, I'd probably cover the exposed foam with material. But I'm not. :D

Thank you! I hadn't realized how long it's been since I did any updates. And thank you for the kind words, really. And, what high command doesn't know, well, you know. Mainly been going back and forth on the I/O situation. I do have a Bodnar board, as well as a Brydling, but I also wanted to have more of an individual, "per-panel" solution. So I've been looking into using Arduino. However, a sketch coder I am not. I've been trying to read up on it, but it hasn't quite clicked yet. Fortunately, or unfortunately in the way you look at it, there are several people currently engaged in coming up with an I/O solution. Some based on EOS and using EOS specific boards, others with just Arduino, etc. Again, not knowing how to code Arduino I'm kind of at their mercy and awaiting those wonderful, incredibly gifted individuals. ;) So I guess I'll just show a couple panels I've completed lately. The environmental panel I'm just using three Ethernet cables for a wiring harness. I'm running both the pots and the switches to the Brydling board. The VHF panel is a little odd, sure. First, I wanted to try it with the analog display. I've realized that matching up the display with the aircraft would be a nightmare. So I thought I'd see how 7-segment LEDs would look. Looks alright I think, though I'd have to expand the first and last digit to have two LEDs show instead of just one. I'm hoping to get an Arduino or EOS board for that one soon. So that's it for me lately. Again, thanks for the compliment.

I tried looking at that flyaces web site. That thing, admittedly, is pretty cool. I'd like to know how they pull it off using only one projector?
-
That thing is beautiful! And you took it down? After all that work? I think I might wander over and take a look at that thread.

Nice to see you back, DC! Nice job on the wiring. I never want to do that again. That's why I've been trying, key word is trying, to make my own PCBs, even if it's just for the CDU and UFC. Good luck on the house venture.

My probably semi finished pit
MacFevre replied to mr_mojo97's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Congratulations! Although to be honest, I never found a pit builder that's ever been "finished." There's always just one more thing. :D -
Thank you Tacno. I really appreciate it. It's a very novel way of installing the buttons!

Not to cause any more tension, because there really are plusses and minuses to both systems, and you both have very valid points. (If I had the money, I would definitely have a projection system right now. I'll also be buying an OCR because really, it's freaking cool!) However, I do have one thing I must disagree with you, Flim. You say that once they finally release the actual product that the majority of the simmers here will be using it. That one I personally don't see happening. At least for the majority of the simmers in this particular forum. (In the sense that this forum is for pit builders.) To make it as realistic as possible, with your portal to the outside and the only thing being simulated is through the cockpit windscreen, or monitor. With the OCR, that makes this space, and all we're doing here, obsolete. I don't see that happening. Like I said, I'll be getting an OCR. Maybe one day it will be of a resolution and immersion that you will forget it's not real. But until that time, reality (or what we're trying to achieve here simulating reality) to me will always be better. Unfortunately, unless the curved projection system, which is the ultimate in immersion simulation for physical builds, drops in price and setup challenges, most will simply be using a monitor. Now the rest of the forum? Who knows, you might be right! In fact, I wish I had an OCR right now, but not for the A-10C. My physical pit will always trump a computer one. To say otherwise would be admitting we're all wasting our time, talents, and money. :(

You work quick! Nice job.

What? Really? They've changed?? Well, I guess they had to. I mean, I did actually get one so it makes sense that they would say, "What? That guy over at the ED forum's has one of our fire handles? Hmm... Well I guess this calls for a redesign!" DM. do you have a link or a picture of one of the new ones? I suppose in my case, I'll stick to the old design. I suppose if it's NVIS lit and it goes off, you have a lot bigger problems than staying in night vision mode. Anyway, Steve, it's this one here:

I think they'll be great as is. Just to be curious, what else have you been able to make with your printer? Thinking about getting in on the mini printer that's on Kickstarter right now. Just for dun, of course.

Yep. It was Jimbo who made the nice how-to on the pull. It starts here. http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1922078&postcount=15

OK. I'm sold. What do I need to do or can I do to start using this on my pit? Can I create my own boards or is this a project that we have to wait for? Honestly, I've got time that I can spend on this, is there anything I can do to help? I'm not a programmer, but I try to help in any other way. I don't have a lot of extra money, 2 kids in college,) but I could even try helping financially. The reason I ask is I just really hate to keep creating the I/O system when a system like this is so much better. I mean, I'd definitely like to use this, but really would like to make use of the pit in the near future.

Hey Steve, have you checked out Devon Custard's Arduino thread? At http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1975655&postcount=18 he does a Master Caution example.
-
Hi Whartsell. Not sure, how many inputs will one board take? And does it do output? I've got a few Unos and a couple Megas, but no sketches for them yet. But yes, I can use some more.
-
Thanks for the idea of using Designspark. Will try it tonight. Gadroc, are you going to be selling your EOS boards, or can you sell me the plans for them? I'm still hoping to consolidate all my different I/O systems into just one system type. I've been waiting for your boards, but would love to try creating them myself if it would make getting it a little sooner. I've got your CMSP panel and it works wonderfully. I'm assuming your EOS boards will come with sketches? (Of course that also makes a huge assumption that it's based on Arduino.) Sorry, but I've been struggling with trying to make my own, and it's simply taking me a really long time to learn. Thanks.

I wanted to try my hand at making homemade PCBs. Just for fun, really, and seeing if I could do it. I also wanted to try it out for my CDU, as after I made the UFC with just a perf-board, it really looks like a rats nest! I've been looking everywhere for either a Fritzing or Eagle CAD library for a simple tactile switch with an LED. Haven't found one! So I thought I'd try and look for anyone else who has used either of these programs, (or any others,) to create their own PCBs or found a switch with LED? I Haven't found any or seen any PCB creators, so thought I'd ask and see if anyone has made any PCBs or PCB files, or would like to share? Gus shows he's made one for his radios one on his Web site, but it links to a 404 page. I haven't seen anyone else making any.

Wow, look at that! That actually looks pretty sharp Steve! Nicely done.
-
That actually looks pretty neat. Thanks for the info. So does it work well for you? Is there much of a difference felt in-game?
-
Ah Harsh. Sure freaking wish I would have seen this earlier. I've just saved enough to start looking to replace my Cougar! Well, win some lose some I guess.
-
Well it's nice to know that the pull of the pit can overcome the pull of the, well, let's say they both can be a powerful pull! :D Don't have too much fun or you won't want to come back. :) never mind, have as much of a good time as you can!!
-
Wow! Well that would do it. It's very encouraging knowing that it can be done. Thanks. :)

Hey DC! Welcome back!
