I stand corrected! It might have been the thread about creating a HUD for a cockpit build that I read.
-
Looks awesome. The way the HUD works will need to be changed to work in stereoscopic 3D though. Peter P wrote a load of stuff about it somewhere.

The problem with a custom built pit is that you have to build one for everyone sim you fly, at a cost of thousands of dollars. Also, unless you have a wrap around screen, you can't look over your shoulder to check your six. The fact that head movement in TrackIR is restricted to such a narrow band is one of the things I hate most about it. It feels completely unnatural having to turn your head one way and look the other way with your eyes... Then your view starts jerking all over the place when you reach the edge of the sensors limits. When the consumer rift comes out with reduced latency and higher resolution it will improve situational awareness and immersiveness massively. I absolutely can't wait and am thrilled that Matt is getting hands on time with the development version. The beautiful, interactive cockpits in DCS seem almost like they were made with this kind of technology in mind. I can't imagine a better product to showcase the finished 6DoF, HD rift than DCS F/A-18C. I challenge you to imagine that without getting excited.

About those wingtip vortices & engine smoke ...

Any word on when we'll see this? -
I'd be interested to see some numbers for even higher speeds/altitudes. I know that thinner air = leaner mixture and less fuel flow but I thought with full afterburner on you'd still be dumping a huge amount of fuel into the tail pipe no matter how high up you are. Fuel consumption seems almost more dependant on air speed than throttle setting. I wonder if this a function of the engine management system. As a test I was cruising at angels 50 in falcon BMS in full afterburner and cut the throttle to idle. I pointed the nose down and watched fuel flow INCREASE in the decent. It only began to reduce after I levelled out and the turbine started to wind down as my airspeed bled off.

The sooner this is fixed the better. I find flying 1.2.6 horrible because of this.

Best news I've heard all year! I'm beyond excited to see DCS running on the consumer version of the rift. I think it will be an absolute game changer.

Shhh... we both know that but I'm trying to be diplomatic! -

They're both great aircraft. The vanilla hornet has the edge in avionics, slow speed handling and situational awareness. The Viper has the edge in sheer horsepower and high speed performance (less energy bleed). Then there's the fact the hornet has an extra engine and can land on a boat. I don't think one is 'better' than the other. I just appreciate their strengths and weaknesses. -

What can I say... Nothing winds me up like a Hornet fanboy! ;) -

Wrong. F-16C's are stressed to pull 9G in a standard configuration and can push Mach 2. They also have a higher thrust to weight ratio than the F/A-18C (1.095 vs 0.96) The older C model Hornets will only do 7.5G and Mach 1.8. Instantaneous and sustained turn performance are dependant on altitude and both are pretty damn comparable. High AoA, the hornet has the edge by a long way. I said the Viper is better at pulling G's and going fast. My opinion is based on facts. EDIT: Check out this article for a more detailed comparrison (as non-baised as you'll probably get). http://defence.pk/threads/f-16-vs-f-18-a-navy-test-pilots-perspective.169261/ Here's a taster.... "To accurately compare the Hornet's performance to the Viper's, I took off from the same runway. The Hornet needed 200 feet more than the Viper to get airborne at about the same speed, and at the end of the runway it had only 330 knots versus the Viper's 500-plus." "This jet can hurt you because it has absolutely no problem holding 9G, especially down low. The Hornet is limited to 7.5G by the flight-control software, even though the airframe can handle 9G" -
Hmm... Who posted this? I'd be surprised.

I've given up hope for the Viper now and am looking forward to the Hornet now, even though it wasn't my first choice. From what I hear the situational awareness and cockpit workflow of the hornet is actually slightly better, even though it's not so impressive when it comes to pulling G's and going fast. -
Having looked at the real pictures, I would have to agree with this. The thing to remember though is that it is not in game yet and still very much a WIP. Hopefully there will be further tweaking of the colours. Not sure how easy/difficult this would be though. Maybe cool HDR might be an option... I'm now seriously starting to wonder what ED are going to charge for all this. I know the A-10C beta guys are going to get it for free but it will be interesting to see about everyone else. Obviously making it free would be better for attracting more people to DCS but I understand they gotta make money somewhere.

Yes, this is factual. There is no time frame. Summer 2014 before you should even expect to hear anything else. -
At last! Yeah, it's pretty noticeable at 60fps... Edit: Maybe it won't be a problem with EDGE anyway... We can hope

I actually sponsored the kickstarter for the F-35. Primarily because I wanted to support 3rd party developers, even though I had serious concerns about the fidelity of the product. When the kick started fell through and the F-35 was cancelled however, I can't say I was particularly surprised or disappointed. The worst effect that I can see it having on the community is that other developers are put off, thinking that DCS is a hard market to break into. On the other hand though, perhaps it will encourage the development of less classified aircraft that can be modeled in more exacting detail. Or make others aware that there is a market for this type of simulation but only long as it is done to the highest standards. As for the credentials of KI, I cannot comment other than to say I had some concerns the F-35 would ever reach completion after the kickstarter failed to generate enough revenue.

I'd recommend going for a dual install (1.2.6 and 1.2.5) and playing them back to back. I really hope you will see and understand the problem we are all trying to explain. It's been a long and frustating road for many of us.
-
That's MAXIMUM drop. Usually it is barely noticeable. In the Cessna I fly in real life it is quite noticeable however.
-
Awesome... I love the detail in this thing. Yo-yo, please never leave ED!
-
Why not just fly on 'emergency rich'?
-
Excellent description, this is exactly what I'm seeing.
-
No, still having exactly the same issue in windowed mode. Just to clarify, I'm running DCS with 8GB ram from an SSD as well and it's not a hardware issue as the problem wasn't there in 1.2.5 or before. I also reverted back to 1.2.5 and didn't have the problem. Like others have said, I think everyone probably has it to some extent and hasn't noticed. The game is playable, but to me the experience is vastly inferior to 1.2.5. Some people might not see it as much of an issue, but I value smoothness as a priority and I can definitely see it.
