If it wasn't for my interest in flights sims I'd have zero interest in VR. Traditional gaming just isn't my thing. The only game on the launch lineup that they listed which I'll play is elite dangerous. I won't be buying anything else they've listed.

Leap Motion Compatible with DCS?
Frusheen replied to Leonski's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
My initial fear was a lot of demos had the hands very close to the headset. At least conpared to where switches may be in our VR cockpits. That video does show the arms extending to full reach though. I nearly pulled the trigger on one this morning! I'm terrible for buying crap that I never end up using. It would be just my luck oculus would release a hand tracking add on a week after it arrives. I think I'll wait until I see it supported within DCS. Without support in the sim I know I will never use it. -
This is not the cause. When on all low settings, HDR and shadows etc off as reported earlier there's an average of 50fps drop in performance.

I took it to mean hardware based on what he said in the video.

All of the backers of the origional Kickstarter got one.

I just found the leap thread. Maybe best to continue there so as not to derail Wags announcement. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=162152 Seems that a 'v2' of leap may be on the horizon. Have a look at the video I posted in the thread linked above.

Leap Motion Compatible with DCS?

For those interested in leap or VR input in general this video is worth a watch. It sure does look like they are on the right track. -
Thanks. Looking forward to hear what you think. I watched a video recently on gloveone which shows it is actually tracked using leap motion. I had previously thought it was a standalone product. If it's using the leap SDK it may provide the haptic solution we need. Provided leap is any good of course.
-
Thanks but I don't trust their own videos. The videos provided before Orion were nothing like what people actually experienced. I'm skeptical as a result.
-
Anyone with experience of leap and the latest software? Most reviews I've seen of the leap system are not very good. Anyone tried it in flyinside?
-
If fumbling for a mouse is too difficult then get a trackball. I have one mounted on my collective. Until there is a glove solution that offers haptic feedback I'm happy with that. Leap motion or manus gloves etc don't appeal to me. I see little point going down the hand tracking road without haptics. With proper 3D ray tracing (laser pointer) I think things will be much better than they are now with the misaligned cursor. Hopefully GloveoneVR or another haptic solution will release in the near future.

You don't want traditional sli for VR. It increases latency. We'd need VR sli to be coded (part of GameworksVR) before even considering dual cards. You should research this a bit before you spend money on a second graphics card.
-
This looks like the first venture into motion simulation in VR by manipulating the inner ear. Samsung have announced a headphone which stimulates a nerve to fool the vestibular system. This could be great for DCS: I'm sure some better videos will be released in the coming days.
-
I think the same. A ray casting which can be moved by the mouse. That way we will no longer have the misalignment issue with the crosshairs.

I used to fly at low frame rate in DK1 for hours without being sick. It's not until I actually got the dk2 to 75fps that I noticed how much better it is to have low persistence. The tracking is so much smoother and more enjoyable. I think DCS only uses two cores with one for audio. If you're at 80-90% on a CPU core you may be CPU bound. That would explain your graphics card being idle. There are lots of optimizations needed in DCS 1.5 and 2 though. My CPU and GPU are not being pushed as hard as they could be and with the latest releases I still get drops in fps below 75. Previous builds of 1.5 had no problem maintaining 75fps.
-
Then you haven't really experienced proper VR which requires 75fps constant. You'll know what the problem is with lower frame rates once you've experienced tracking with low persistence.
-
Wait for the update. Hopefully that will give us a performance boost. For now all settings on low, HDR, blur, etc off and shadows off is the best you can hope for.
-
We need a doors off version for winching and sling operations in VR. It's been asked before but hey I'll ask again.
-
Thanks Wags. Can't wait.

I've used several VR apps such as the cinema player from my seat at my PC while my camera was well out of range at my separate DCS flight seat. Orientation tracking still works fine (like dk1) but obviously positional tracking doesn't.

No need to even do that (at least with ELite Dangerous). Just install steamVR to your PC from steam (and set it up once). That's it. No need to open steam each time. Just open the game and if you have selected hmd or VR mode in options it automatically opens on the headset. I can't say for sure that the DCS implementation will be the same but it should be similar i.e no need to run the game from steam.
-
I believe you just need to install steamVR from steam. SteamVR will then hook to the standalone DCS. At least that is the case with some other titles such as Elite Dangerous.

I think the reason that was able to work was due to the game interface and the game itself being two different executables. That has changed since 1.5. It was also before the move to direct mode rendering. I liked it as well. It was very convenient that way. If the game interface as it exists now was made a little bigger and fixed in space with the ability to lean in it may be good enough. We won't know for sure how readable it will be until we experience the increased resolution of the consumer headsets though.

GloveoneVR looks more impressive as it offers haptic feedback. https://www.gloveonevr.com
