  1. The other side of John Boyd Hey Probad - Thanks for the insight into the other side of the Boyd story. I'm thinking that Marshall L. Michel III's THE REVOLT OF THE MAJORS: HOW THE AIR FORCE CHANGED AFTER VIETNAM will be my next read. Although the topic subject matter (at first appearance) seems a little incongruent with a Dissertation for a Doctorate of Philosophy - but Never judge a Book ......... And I have to salute a Fighter Pilot who takes on the esoteric world of the purely intellectual pursuit of that Degree. Bet he was the 'Hoot' of the program. :smartass: Although no hero of mine, I found the Boyd book interesting from a historical perspective, but have to admit it's a mystery to me how he never got Court Martialed for his undisciplined arrogence with senior officers. And I totally agree - that he was an unabashed self promoter exceeded only by his self-centered stubborness. And whether you're an advocate of his work or not, at least his story adds a colorful character to the perceived bland of Air Force Blue. And yes - I was well aware of Boyd's detractors: From Wikipedia: Boyd was invited to Top Gun to brief the instructors on his "Energy Maneuverability" charts. Boyd's briefing did not go well. When Boyd insisted that it was impossible for the F-4 to win a dogfight against a MiG-17, the Top Gun instructors disagreed, two of them having shot down MiG-17s in combat. Commander Ron Mugs McKeown later said "Never trust anyone who would rather kick your ass with a slide rule than with a jet."
  2. Just finished a book that I wished I'd have read a long time ago. John Boyd enjoyed an intellectual fight as much as he did dogfights. If you like stories of going against the grain - you'll like this book. John Boyd (along with his partner in crime; Tom Christie) developed the now accepted the theory of Energy Maneuverability as it applied to Fighter Aircraft and Tactics. He and his Acolytes were the Avant-garde Reformers of Aviation and Military concepts that challenged the established conventional wisdom. Many (General Officer) enemies were made along the way - and Boyd liked nothing better than showing a General how little they Know. Col. John Boyd Is Dead at 70; Advanced Air Combat Tactics http://www.nytimes.com/1997/03/13/us/col-john-boyd-is-dead-at-70-advanced-air-combat-tactics.html John Boyd (military strategist) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Boyd_(military_strategist) Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War https://www.amazon.com/Boyd-Fighter-Pilot-Who-Changed/dp/0316796883 To combat pilots of the late 1950's, it was always high noon in the skies above the Nevada desert. A pilot, a crack instructor at Nellis Air Force Base, perhaps, or a hotshot Navy flier passing through would get on the radio to call him out and within minutes Colonel Boyd would have another notch in his belt. They did not call him 40-second Boyd for nothing. From 1954 to 1960 virtually every combat pilot in the country knew that Colonel Boyd, a former Korean War pilot who helped establish the Fighter Weapons School at Nellis, had a standing offer: take a position on his tail, and 40 twisting, turning seconds later he would have the challenger in his own gun-sights or pay $40. Colonel Boyd never lost the bet in more than 3,000 hours of flying time.
  3. Just an Observation - Not saying this is definitely true, might just be my perception Over the last several months starting back to the Summer (new updates of DCS World 1.5+), the AI Dogfight Opponents (Instant Action: P-51D vs FW-190 and MiG-21 vs F-4) seemed to have changed in difficulty. To me anyway, it seems: - The Pesky German FW-190 has become easier to Combat (with P-51D) in the 1 v 1 Instant Action Scenario while - The American F-4 Phantom II has become a more formidable opponent for the MiG-21bis - the F-4 is harder to kill (and Comrade Igor4U dies more often). Zis just me, or has anyone else detected the changes in AI Adversary Skill Level ?
  4. Posting here rather than Leatherneck-MiG-21 Forum Section for wider Exposure. (Windows\System32) ntdll.dll and the MiG-21 Module are crashing DCS World when I launch MiG-21 Instant Action - Dogfight, or when I try to Watch (replay) any MiG-21 Mission. As far as I can tell - all other Modules are fine. This behavior is relatively new - but I haven't flown the MiG-21 in a Month or two (been fixated on the F-5E Tiger II) The current ntdll.dll File looks like a relatively new version pushed out via Windows Update: MS16-111: Description of the security update for Windows Kernel: September 13, 2016 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3175024 Crash Notes follow from the Crash Dialog Box and Windows Event Viewer: Problem signature: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: DCS.exe Application Version: 1.5.4.57013 Application Timestamp: 57e4fc92 Fault Module Name: ntdll.dll Fault Module Version: 6.1.7601.23539 Fault Module Timestamp: 57c99b8f Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Offset: 000000000004eef1 OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.48 Locale ID: 1033 Additional Information 1: d68b Additional Information 2: d68b3f9fe70df5dc28cdcb97cbe83669 Additional Information 3: 379d Additional Information 4: 379d9ee02b565cc774ac25141e5ca203 Windows Event Viewer: Faulting application name: DCS.exe, version: 1.5.4.57013, time stamp: 0x57e4fc92 Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 6.1.7601.23539, time stamp: 0x57c99b8f Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x000000000004eef1 Faulting process id: 0x334 Faulting application start time: 0x01d217574c4de8a2 Faulting application path: C:\DCS World\bin\DCS.exe Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll Report Id: e7f7975a-834b-11e6-ac0d-74d435e57d81 Attaching ntdll.dll Properties OS: Windows 7 Pro 64bit Was there a recent update pushed out for the MiG-21 (within last month or two) ? Any Bogey Dope on this Problem ?
  5. For my F-5E Tiger II; Both DCS World Updates 1.5.4.56500.154/155 broke a few my HOTAS Warthog Programmed Button Functions. Other Aircraft seemed unaffected. In the Control Setup Page - the correct HOTAS Buttons were indicated but Redded Out. I had to delete the Programmed Button and then Reapply the same Button to reestablish the Link. Any Idea why this is happening (only with the F-5E) ?
  6. Now Working Scratching my Head - Speedbrake just started working after Re-Booting DCS World / Have no Idea why it wasn't working for quite a while before. PS: One more note on Skin Paints. Recent Changes to the F-86 have made a few of my downloaded Skins (Huff, James Jabara, et6c..) messed up - Not sue why added Sheet Metal Panels now lay on top of previous paint liveries.
  7. For several months now - the (mine anyway) F-86's Speed Brake is not Functional. I have re-verified that my Thrustmaster HOTAS Warhog Throttle SpeedBrakes Switch is properly configured in Options. Any Idea what';s up with my SpeedBrake ? PS: I need every bit of Slow Down I can get. In the Quick Start Mission 'Free Flight' - it's almost impossible to slow down to approach speed with a Straight In to either Runway off the Nose without that Speed Brake. My guess is that the Low Speed Drag of the F-86 may not be modeled correctly - Jet Aircraft of that era would soon fall out of the sky in Idle Power with Gear and Flaps hanging - this F-86 doesn't bleed a knot !
  8. Swiss Air Force F-5E Tiger II's in Red & White
  9. Black Tomcat with Bunny Tail I'm guessing that the (new & improved) Politically Correct US Navy doesn't sport this paint scheme anymore.
  10. TomCat Please ! Concur with Xenovia - I want to sweep the Wings Aft and push the Throttles Full Forward ! There are Bad Guy Bandits out there that Need Splashing ! I'm Holding OUT - the TomCat will be my Next DCS World Mod Purchase ! Wonder if Navy Guys get away with blowing thru the Box out at Nellis > We'll See
  11. This has happened a number of times to me in the recent past (once late last year and just today): In Quickstart Mission (Free Flight) for both the MiG-15 and MiG-21 I approach and land at the nearest Airfield. The Landing work out OK; But (the Problem is) when I watch the Track Playback (Replay) - the Jet offsets Left or Right of the Runway anywhere from a few feet (land in dirt) to a few hundred meters (land in buildings). ?????? Any Ideas why Playback (Watch Track) would position the aircraft differently from where it actually flew (and landed) ?
  12. Just Curious if this is just me - or DCS World wide ? After upgrading from DCS World 1.2 to ver 1.5 My favorite MiG-21 Liveries are messed up (bare spots where base metal shows thru). They are the Red and Red 67 Liveries: МиГ-21 из состава 234-го ГИАП (Бортовой 54 http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/1305861/ Red and Red 67 Anyone else have this problem ? - maybe the author has to re-issue updated version for DCS World ver 1.5
  13. Two Quick Additional Q? 1. Now when I start up DCS World, I get the Log-In Prompt overlaid on the Main Menu Start Screen; can I Opt-Out of this and not have it Display until I want to Login ? 2. I used to get Aircraft Theme Music at the Start Screen for whichever Aircraft Wall-Paper was set on the Start-Up Screen. The Music is Gone - can I get it Back ? THANX !
  14. Thanks 4 the Vetors there Gents, Pulled the Trigger Today and upgraded 1.2 to ver 1.5 ! Let the System auto-update rather than a Clean Install. Worked like a Champ: - All my Modules were there (only the Mig-21Bis had to be re-activated), same as here: Loss of mig-21bis activation with openbeta update 1.2.15 http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=139557&page=3 -all User\Saved Games\DCS\ Cutom Configurations (Input & Views) were saved and carried over - all additional (downloaded) Liveries were saved - and (as usual after any update) just had to apply my Backup\Mods\Aircraft\Mission Modifications back because they get reset (to original; settings) All-in-All it went smooth as Glass. I was worried about having to re-program all the custom control input options (Joystick & Throttle Buttons, and Keyboard Key commands) for each aircraft; but No Worries Mates ! All A-OK !
  15. I've known about the recent 1.5 and 2.0 Options for a few Months. The DCS Updater just updated itself - and is asking me if I want to upgrade DCS World from 1.2 to 1.5. Just had a few questions before I hit "Go" ! - Will all Modules seamlessly make the Upgrade, or will I have to Re-Install each Module and Activate each ? - If all Modules make the transition to 1.5 (no Re-Install required), will all the custom control Configurations (Key Commands, Throttle & Stick Buttons) for each module also carry over so I won't have to re-program each module separately ? Thanks 4 any Help in Advance ! BVR Igor4U ! ;)
  16. Here's something you'll enjoy - take yourself up/down the famous Las Vegas 'Strip' (Las Vegas Boulevard) at 50ft and 500KIAS. That should bring you good luck !
  17. Will 1.2 Update to 1.5, or is 1.5 a New Clean Install ? Reference DCS World News Letter 11-Dec-2015 ================================== DCS World 1.5.2 Update Today we have updated DCS World Open Beta to Ver. 1.5.2 with the following primary changes: Stability improvements Continued work on Chinese localization and textures New Mi-8MTV2 features like anti-icing “SECTION X” lamps and current heating for windows Fixes and improvements to the L-39C. F-86F improvements, including improved input for clock, canopy controls, rudder switch and fire warning system MiG-15bis improvements, including: fixed marker activation over NDBs and adjusted G-suit performance A-10C improvements, including fixes for no elevation data for init position, manually entered coordinates of init position not changing, and RWR switch being set to OFF when starting hot or from runway. Corrected NDB and VOR positions. Fixed memory leaks. Updated Magic II and Super 530D performance. Updated and corrected Encyclopedia. Ver. 1.5. This version includes all the same content as Ver. 1.2, but uses the new graphics engine. At the end of December 2015, we plan to move Ver. 1.5 out of Open Beta and make it the new released (stable) version. At that time, Ver. 1.2 will no longer be updated and supported. You can download it here: http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/world/1.5/ ================================================================================== I see 1.5 Beta is fragged to be the New Full-Up DCS World Version by Year's End succeeding 1.2. Does it have to be manually downloaded and Cleanly installed from Scratch - or will 1.2 offer to Update at Update Prompt at Startup (when 1.5 is Final and Ready) ? THANX !
  18. Thanks All for the Quick Replies- Appreciate the help ! Now if I only had bigger Pipes for Down-Loading.
  19. Any help clarifying these Upgrade Options appreciated. A few Questions: =============================================== I'm currently running DCS World version 1.2.16 So if I download and install both: - DCS World 1.5 Beta - DCS World 2.0 Alpha Are they each separate stand alone installs in separate (Drive) storage locations ? or Are they sequential upgrades that over-write the subsequent version in the same Storage location ? If they are separate Stand-Alone Installs - how do you get your Pay-ware (other aircraft) Modules up and running ? Do you use the Module Manager and have to activate each Module in each new DCS World Version ? =================================================== As for the NEVADA Test and Training Range (NTTR) Map: * I have pre-purchased the NTTR Map* - Does downloading DCS World 2.0 Alpha also automatically include NTTR Map ? - Is NTTR Map a Module ? Can you download, install and activate NTTR Map using the Module Manager, or must you use the Web Installer ? - Understand NTTR Map only works in DCS World 2.0 ? Thanx for the Help !
  20. Pratt & Whitney TF30 Some P&W TF30 Engine Links: Pratt & Whitney TF30 http://wiki.scramble.nl/index.php/Pratt_%26_Whitney_TF30 Pratt & Whitney TF30 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pratt_%26_Whitney_TF30 TF30 Engine http://www.pw.utc.com/TF30_Engine Pratt & Whitney's TF30 was the first dual-spool, afterburning turbofan engine to enter service with the military. The program was launched in 1959 to develop a military engine with afterburning for sustained supersonic speeds. The first flight of the engine, designated TF30 by the military, was on December 21, 1964, in a twin-engine General Dynamics F-111A being developed for the Air Force. Here's the Highest Thrust Variant of the TF30 Motor: TF30-P-100 25,100 lb (111.6 kN) thrust (with afterburner). Installed in F-111F and in 1985-86, upgraded to TF30-P-111. The Thrust of a TurboJet Engine with the Fuel Efficiency of a TurboFan, the TF30 was cutting edge technology in its' day. Great choice for the F-111 which was basically a high-speed low-level Fighter-Bomber conducting Interdiction and Strategic Attack Missions. But for an aircraft (F-14A) that could find itself violently Dog-Fighting with On-Off Hi-G load, Hi-AoAs, and rapid Full Range Throttle Movements - the TF30 wasn't optimal. Example: From the Throttles in Afterburner Range, coming aft over the detent back to Military Power and below (No-AB), the procedure was to stabilize at Min AB, then walk one throttle at a time back into the Mil-Power Range. This was to minimize the chance that both engines would compressor stall at the same time. Note: Coming out of AB back to Mil-Power was tough on the Engine for whatever reason. Had a WSO who had prior F-4 Time and I let him fly - he ripped both throttles out of AB and yes - One Engine rolled back. Had to shut it down in order to re-start it. Also - worked with a Senior Maintenance Engine Tech. HE said the fellow who designed the TF30 Engine Fuel Control went Insane. Point being that the TF30 Engine Fuel Control was an extremely complex and temperamental piece of equipment (responsible for many engine headaches for Maintenance).

  22. Sounds like Open Beats are designed to be separate installs with separate config files (in Saved Games) Download beta version http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/world/beta/ We will release DCS as an Open Beta using a web installer. This open beta install will be complete version that resides in parallel to your release DCS World install and have separate configuration files located in Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\. Once you download the open beta, you will use the Module Manager to install your modules. We particularly hope that this, combined with the automatic track crash generator, will help us resolve remaining network issues prior to the final release version of DCS. This is an optional beta, and if you do not wish to take part, you certainly do not have to. The primary purpose of the Open Beta is to improve the quality of release versions (particularly before we send it to Steam and other online services). We want to ensure that no new bugs are introduced and that network play is operating well. Despite the best efforts of our test team, items will get missed unless we have a much larger testing pool with a large variety of hardware and game setting configurations. The larger testing pool also allows us to better stress-test network games given the large number of players available. That being said, the objective for the Open Beta is identify and report NEW bugs. This is a big reason why we have the Open Beta as a completely separate installation. This allows you to compare the current release version with the new Open Beta to ensure that a bug is in fact new (not in current version). Some other notes: 1- Ideally, no modifications (mods) should be used for the Open Beta. Any mod can invalidate test results. If you feel a mod is vital to run your mission, you must specify any and all mod used in the mission when submitting a report. 2- When you discover a bug / crash, first please confirm that it is a new bug. If it is, please enter it in the DCS Open Beta Test Reports forum located here: http://forums.eagle.ru/forumdisplay.php?f=311. Please use the correct reports sub forum. Attach any produced track crash and the log files created when you have a crash (located in /Users//Saved Games/DCS/Logs) along with a description of the crash and DXDiag readout saved as a TXT file (WinKey+R, enter "DXDIAG", Save All Information, Save TXT File to Desktop, Attach). Eagle staff and our test team will be reviewing these reports and entering the valid ones into our internal bug tracking database. Please don't address in technical support service. Issues and problems of an open beta won't be considered.
  23. It's a Field of View (FOV) Thing. When switching between External Chase View and Interior Cockpit View - the different FOVs make objects in the distance appear to be different distances away. In my Example Shown - both Screen-Shots (Inside and Outside the Cockpit) are taken at the exact Same Moment in Time. Note how the Distance from the Runway appears to differ quite a significant amount. Now here's the Twist: For Landing an Aircraft - I have a (fixed) Set View that allows me to see over the Nose of the Aircraft (to keep runway in sight) and at the same time allows me to see the Flight Instruments I need to monitor necessary parameter. So what I want to do is Adjust Exterior (Chase View) FOV to match the FOV inside the Cockpit. - I want Cockpit View to be the 'Constant' - And External FOV I want as the 'Variable' Now I know that I can get FOV to match the other way around - Zooming In/Out inside the Cockpit will adjust FOV. But I don't want to adjust FOV that way because I lose my Optimum Visual of the Cockpit and Flight Instruments. Here were some Lua Code that I thought might help: In Saved Games\DCS\Config\View\SnapViews.lua Looks like I might be able to set for each Aircraft at this Line of Code (Yes/No) ??? [13] = {--default view viewAngle = 98.743721,--FOV or Maybe in Saved Games\DCS\Config\View\View.lua, would adjusting this Line of Code work? Would it be for all Aircraft ? ExternalViewAngleDefault = 70.0 Any Vector Appreciated !
  24. I had a 2008 technology hi-end PC (Windows XP Pro 32bit) that could run X-Plane 10 by using the " /3GB" Switch in the Boot.ini File. But it choked on DCS World in 2013: Install Problems - DCS World & FC3 Not Working http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=112448&highlight=%2F3GB+Igor4U
  25. Here is anothert piece of the (turning) performance puzzle. Energy Maneuverability Diagrams (my understanding - can't confirm) were created along with F-16 development as a way the engineers came up with to depict aircraft performance in terms of energy (sustainment). Each Chart is for a specific aircraft, weight, configuration / drag-index, altitude, etc..... Pilots use these charts to compare their strength and weaknesses against dissimilar aircraft and hope to keep their parameter where they have an advantage. - Where Ps is Positive, the Aircratf is gaining energy (can be turned into either altitude gain or velocity increase, or a combination of both) - Where Ps = 0: The Aircraft is maintaining its Energy State - Where Ps is Negative, the Aircraft is losing energy (either bleeding airspeed or altitude, or both) Turn Rates and Turn Radius are easily read from these Charts. Ps = 0 will provide an aircraft's sustained turning performance. Energy-Maneuverability Diagrams http://www.combatsim.com/review.php?id=133
