  1. Airspeed Displayed* in (what would it would be called in Windows) the Task Bar ? * When in F2 External View I recall (from a recent post) it said that this was True Airspeed (TAS) displayed in Knots. So I looked at Three Scenarios: MiG-21Bis: 15 Degrees C (Standard Day 59 Degrees F at Surface) 10,000 ft MSL / 39 Degrees F (at -2 degree F per 1,000 ft) Indicated Airspeed: 710 kph = 383 KIAS Task Bar Speed Displayed: 430 TAS Calculator1: 481 TAS Calculator2: 460 F-86: 20 Degrees C (68 Degrees F at Surface) 10,000 ft MSL / 48 Degrees F (at -2 degree F per 1,000 ft) Indicated Airspeed: 380 KIAS Task Bar Speed Displayed: 450 TAS Calculator1: 484 TAS Calculator2: 456 A-10A: 20 Degrees C (68 Degrees F at Surface) 10,000 ft MSL / 48 Degrees F (at -2 degree F per 1,000 ft) Indicated Airspeed: 280 KIAS Task Bar Speed Displayed: 322 TAS Calculator1: 356 TAS Calculator2: 336 Observation: In each case, the Task Bar Airspeed (TAS?) was (1 to 10%) lower than either TAS given by the Calculators. So I'm still assuming that it's showing True Airspeed, but maybe using slightly different calculations than the Online TAS Calculators TAS Calculator (TAS Calculator1) http://indoavis.co.id/main/tas.html True Airspeed Calculator (TAS Calculator2) http://www.csgnetwork.com/tasinfocalc.html Maybe in future builds we can also have Indicated Airspeed, and Ground Speed displayed. In particular - Indicated Airspeed would be useful because it lets a Pilot know if they have enough Air Molecules to Maneuver.
  2. Thanx Cruiser18 ! I got it. You have to "Right Click" on the Combat Load & Pylon Location you'd like to modify. Then select your Weapon Category (Bombs, Rockets, Missiles, etc...) to choose from. Then select the specific weapon you want. Thanx Again - I'm gonna go hammer some targets with those Monster S-24s ! 3. Red & White Checkerboard I'm guessing that this is a (Real Life) Airshow Bird. Not sure if the rules allow or just Operational Paint Schemes ? But I love the Look ! Here's the Links: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Croatia---Air/Mikoyan-Gurevich-MiG-21UMD/1071969/L/ http://garthehangar.ning.com/photo/croatian-mig21?commentId=6402679%3AComment%3A42708&xg_source=activity
  4. lucien's landing l(correction - that was 159th Viper's Landing) landing video (posted 9-28 three postings previous) there is among the best I've seen to date. Looks like his trick is to keep the speed up a bit and be a tad steep. Those two things (speed & steep) combine to keep the AoA (Alpha) low enough for the Pilot to actually see the runway over the nose of the aircraft. Very Nice Roundout and Flare to a Smooth On Speed On Spot Touchdown. Nicely Done ! PS: Don't forget all to "Do not come back to Idle on the Throttles until wheels on the runway. I understand MiG-21 has blown flaps (like F-104 Starfighter) and the aircraft needs that Blown Flap Lift all the way to touchdown or she'll drop like a rock ! And for the too fast comments - Read the Manual (I was surprised also at first - but the Book was written for a reason). Lucien was on speed all the way ! 5. How to load-up 4x S-24 Buran unguided rockets I'm looking for how to load up 4 S-24 Rockets Pylons 1 thru 4 When I click on the Ordnance Tab (Ground Attack Loadouts) in Mission Editor, I get 8 Choices (including Empty) and none of them are S-24 Rockets. Lots of 16/32 55mm unguided Rocket Pods are available - but not that Big Muther Hunkin S-24 ! I'm still a newbie with my Fishbed, so lots to learn. But any help appreciated. Thanx ! ======================================================= S-24 Buran unguided rocket http://www.harpoondatabases.com/encyclopedia/Entry2811.aspx S-24 rocket http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-24_rocket The S-24 is a rocket weapon designed and used by the Soviet Air Force. It remains in use by the Russian Air Force. The name is based on the diameter of the rocket, 24 cm (9.4 in). The Soviet Union was an early, enthusiastic user of rocket weapons, employing them as early as the 1930s. The S-24B is a very large, powerful unguided weapon and one of a handful of successors to the earlier world war II era BETAB-750DS rockets. The S-24B is 2.33 metres (7 ft 8 in) long, with a launch weight of 235 kg (520 lb). It has a 123 kg (271 lb) blast-fragmentation warhead. Its range is about 2–3 kilometres (1.2–1.9 mi). The S-24B is carried individually on weapon pylons, rather than in pods. The rocket is also license produced in Iran under the name of Shafaq.
  6. Figured out how to change Ordnance Ok - I figured out how to: Start Airborne - with Ground Attack Rocket Loadout and Gun. Here are the Steps in Sequence: Create Fast Mission - Advanced Mode - Edit Mission File - Open MiG-21BIS - Quickstart - MiG-21 Ground-Attack.miz (Note: this is the Instant Action Mission) Fly Mission Question about Unsaved Changes - NO Select - Mission Planner (Not "Fly") Click on Ordnance Tab (Loadout Editor) Question on Unsaved Payload - NO There are two Loadouts with UB-32 Rocket Pods (each 32 55mm unguided Rockets) Select either One Fly - Fly First Thing I do is Jettison my Outboard Stores (either GP Bombs or Cluster Munitions). Now I'm left with all Forward Firing Ordnance (Rockets and Gun) OK - Now we can go Shoot some Stuff ! ================================================= The MiG-21Bis is one of the more High-Fidelity Aircraft in terms of Realism. That means it is (Very) Switchology Intemsive: In the above Scenario, here's my first try at setting up all the switches involved: The Weapons Activation Interface on Right Vertical Panel (pg 128) is for the most part; already set up for you. (Check to be Sure all 7 switches up). Page 129 (Weapons Selection Interface): - Switch 2 Down for ASP (HUD) Master Mode to Air-to-Ground - 4-5-6 Gun Load Buttons (get Green Light on #1. - Pylon and Weapons Type Selector Knob (page 130 - I set mine 11:00 O'Clock giving me 4 Rockets each Pod - 8 Total for each Weapons Release/Fire Command) As for ASP (Optical Sight - HUD) Setup - there are tons of switches (page 131/132): I haven't tried them all, but for this mission (Rockets & Gun), looks like you'll need these: 13. Up - Guns Down - Rockets 14. Up - Forward Firing Ordnance Down - Bombs 15.. Range Calculation / Estimate: Up - Auto Down - Manual 23. Pipper On 27. Pipper and Fixed Grid Thought: I though I could just easily set up the keyboard commands to select and expend Ordnance. But that's pretty complex trying to identify all the key commands against the switches listed in the Pilot Manual (sometimes they use different terminology). And almost all key commands are actually double-key commands using modifiers and Letter Keys. So I basically gave up on the idea of using key commands for employing the weapon system. I'm finding it easier to just use cockpit view and activate/set switches with Mouse Movement and Pointer. Final Thought: Ya gotta love Forward Firing (Point & Shoot) Ordnance. Much fewer parameters than Bombs and simpler than precision guided stuff. See it - Point at it - Kill it !
  7. I'm still relatively new to DCS World (and really new with the MiG-21). I know how to change Ordnance Loadouts (External Weapons Stores) for "Missions" using Mission Planner - Loadout Editor Tab My question is: - Can you also (somehow) change Ordnance for the preset "Instant Action" and "Create Fast Mission" Scenarios ? If so - how to ? I'm Stuck - Answer may be No! PS: I would like to start airborne for Air-to-Ground Attack with wall to wall S-5 (55mm) Folding Fin Unguided Rockets and Full GUN ! Can this be done ?
  8. Slight Conflict (about Pylons) between the MiG-21 Operator's Manual and the DCS World Mission Editor. The Manual refers to: Pylons 1 & 2 as the Inboard Pylons (surmise 1 is Left and 2 is Right) and Pylons 3 & 4 as the Outboard Pylons (surmise 3 is Left and 4 is Right) The Mission Editor for MiG-21 Ordnance shows: Pylons 1 & 5 Outboard Pylons 2 & 4 Inboard Pylon 3 Center-line Pylons numbered Left to Right (1 to 5) So I'm guessing Weapons Troops (IYAAYAS) load the SCLs IAW Pylon designations 1 thru 5; while Pilots select and expend Ordnance as shown on page-129 (the Pylon and Weapons Selector Knob (CU7) as Pylons 1 & 2 (Inboard) and 3 & 4 (Outboard)
  9. Hey Tango, Thanx for the Interesting Link: Considering when the MiG was designed (1950s) it was one hell of an aircraft. Keeping up with a jet 20 years newer (and designed to counter it) is no small task. Just proves that if you get the basic design right, it'll keep on going. F-16 will be pretty hard to beat, too, design wise. http://www.indiadefence.com/COPE.htm I remember reading about various COPE INDIA Exercise (maybe the one you reference but I think they were subsequent) and the USAF was very Mum on the Results. Some references to the Results mentioned being "Classified". If the Eagles got Spanked that Bad - I can see Why. The USAF is Good at what it does; but there are also many Nations out there with Highly Experienced & Highly Skilled Pilots flying Top-Notch Equipment. Where-as the USAF puts emphasis on being Good Officers (sometimes ahead of being Good Pilots); Experience in the Cockpit will trump time in a Staff Job everytime. And Sequestration doesn't help - you want Good Sticks - they gotta Fly !
  10. OK - Got it ! The MiG-21 here is very realistic in that it requires "Real World" multiple actions to Raise the Gear. 1. Gear Lock Disengage (Up Position) 2. Gear Up 3. Gear Lock Neutral (Middle Position) So I assigned single sequential (Left to Right) keys: "E" "R" "T" (R =- Retract) But the MiG-21 does deviate from the standard DCS World key commands for Gear Toggle Up/Down= "G" No Gear Toggle Option in MiG-21. Gear Up and Down are separate mutually exclusive commands/actions. *** Note: I should have read this Post: How to retract the gears? http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=130332
  11. Yeah - sometimes (despite being properly remapped), modified key commands cease to function. Example: I changed Keyboard Gear Up/Down commands as Follows: - Gear Up = "U" - Gear Down = "G" Yesterday it was working fine. Today, Gear Up (U) stopped working. Checked Config - Inputs - MiG-21 - Keyboard - Keyboard.diff.lua and it showed Gear Up to be Valid "U". I'll recheck tomorrow. Maybe just a Hiccup !
  12. Thanks All ! Got it - Just didn't realize how many keystrokes it took to Jettison Off External Stores. Yeah - you have to Open the Red Cap Protective Cover before getting access to and pushing the actual Jettison Stores (Inner/Outer) Button. Wonder why the MiG-21 Designers didn't give their Pilots an Emergency Jettison (All Store) Button for Situations like: - Engine Thrust Problem on Takeoff - Getting Pounced On and need to quickly go Air-to-Air Configuration Thanx Again to All !
  13. My MiG-21bis lets me change keyboard keystroke commands for various functions, but in many instance it neither responds to the command change, nor does it save the change when I go back and re-check the settings. The when I reset the default - they don't seem to work. I've had many problems trying to reset Jettison (inner/outer pylons) and Drag Chute Release command. Just curious if this is because of 3rd Party status and the MiG-21 just isn't integrated as well as native DCS World Warbirds ? Never rule Operator Error - but wondering if anyone else had trouble resetting Keyboard Commands.
  14. Still going thru Familiarization Training with the MiG-21bis I was researching how to Jettison Stores. Doesn't appear to be a single emergency Jettison Button. The Jettison Keyboard Commands (see attached picture) are NOT working for me. None of the keyboard commands have worked. The In-Cockpit Commands (via Mouse control) work just Fine (for inboard and outboard Pylons). Still have to test the Center Line Fuel Tank Jettison button on Control Stick (if I can orient my view to activate via mouse). Any ideas why my keyboard command aren't working. Everything else with my MiG-21 and PC System are Code One fully functional !
  15. Auto Seat Height Adjustment for Landing OK Gents - I got it ! I had the seat Height Adjust Check-Box checked all along but didn't even know it because it wasn't working until I toggled it Off and then back On. Now I see exactly what it does - same this I was doing manually with RShift + RCtrl + Num8 for Seat Up ! The Landing Seat Adjustment gets elevates the Pilot so he can see the entire VVI Gauge (handy for judging descent rates), otherwise the Control Stick blocks the View. Additionally, the function help the pilot see over the nose of the Sabre to help keep the runway in sight during approach and landing. Two related Posts: Removing stick from cockpit http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=127902&highlight=Igor4U Adjusting Seat Height / Pilot's Head Height http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=127789&highlight=Igor4U
  16. Thanks "derelor" ! I've also been adjusting Seat Height (to see over the Nose better for Approach & Landing) using the key comoination: RCtl + RShift + Num8(Up) or Num2(Down) I'll have to try unchecking the Box and see how everything works without it. Thanx Again !
  17. Lovin my MiG so far ! She's one fine little sports-car of a Jet. With that small delta wing I knew the MiG-21 Approach Speeds were going to be on the fast side. But I never realized the MiG-21's Approach Speeds were that fast: 340-360 Kilometers/hr (190 KIAS) And 10 to 15 percent of that (airspeed) is solely to keep the AoA low enough so the Pilot can keep the Runway in sight over the nose of the aircraft. Needless to say - I'm still working on my Landings !
  18. In Options - F-86 - Special : What is the Check-box "Landing Seat Adjustment" about ? What effect does Checking / Un-Checking the Box Have ? Any Help - Thanx !
  19. Concur with Hadwell, DDR4 won't make a performance impact until its speeds exceed DDR3 by a good 30-40%. Even though DDR4 will (initially) have higher clock speeds, its increased Latencies will still just put it on a par with DDR3. Maybe a year from now DDR4 will start to show pay-off. But that's great timing for Intel Skylake (CPU) Architecture due out last half of 2015. Skylake should also take advantage of PCIe 4 and SATA Express (SATAe) SSD Interface.
  20. Good Stuff ! Great Links from effte Great Advice from johnv2pt0 Side-note: I've heard it said that the F-16 owes its existence to the F-86. The Generals who championed the concept of the (single seat - single engine) F-16 were the Lieutenants and Captains who cut their teeth on the F-86. That sports-car mentality continued the lineage of the sleek little (single seat single engine) fighter. The F-16 reversed the trend of bigger heavier more complex multi-engine multi-crew fighters. Thank you SabreJet !
  21. effte - Thanx for the helpful Links ! I'll study Up !
  22. Thank Gentlemen ! Copy all - Block 35 Sabre it is !
  23. Hi LarryElder, Back to your original post: "In about a month i'm buying a new pc, that will be mostly for dcs, and now i'm choosing between i7 4790k and the new i7 5820k. The older one has 4 cores but higher clock speed, and the other has 6 cores, but lower clock. As the edge suppose to be relased this year i hope the fact of how many cores will it support was mentioned already ? Can somebody help me out please ?" I say go ahead and build: - Core i7 4790K (it's Bad - Yeah) - Get a nice Z97 Chipset MOBO that supports your flavor Multi GPU (Crossfire-AMD / SLI-Nvidia). Some MOBOs support either SLI or Crossover. You'll be ready for DCS v2. - 2nd Quarter 2015 Intel Broadwell CPU and Nvidia Maxwell (maybe 20nm fab by then) GPUs will be a nice Upgrade Path Other Option - Wait for Intel Skylake (CPU) architecture (maybe later in 2015): Skylake will support several new technologie that might be worth waiting for: - DDR4 Memory - PCIe 4.0 Graphics - SATA Express (SATAe) SSD Interface
  24. 30 Inch 2560x1600 (16:10 aspect ratio) monitors used to be only in the realm of the High-End Enterprise Workstation Use for 3D CAD Engineering and Graphic Artists. Companies such as Dell, HP and NEC dominated the US Market for the Big 30 Inchers. But Now they are appearing focused on Gamers (Flight Sim) with LED Backlighting, Fast Response Times, Built-in-Speakers and 4 Way (Tilt, Pivot, Swivel and Height) ergonomics. High Performance Displays at a fraction of the Price from the Business Machine Manufacturers. I bought this one (Crossover 33X-P PIP DRIVER IPS LED) on eBay in May for $800 US. I am very happy - it's big, bright, and fast and no dead pixels. For a time, Crossover monitors were available on both Amazon and Newegg. Crossover Monitors http://www.crosslcd.co.kr/main.html?tmp=product&pg=33X-P http://www.crosslcd.co.kr/main.html?tmp=product&pg=360P I would definitely consider something 27 to 30 inch 2560 x 1600/1440. You'll like it ! Check this Beauty Out: BenQ BL3200PT Review: A 32-Inch AMVA Monitor At 2560x1440 http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/benq-bl3200pt-qhd-monitor,3898.html
  25. I think 4K's beauty lies in being able to populate a Big Display (30 Inch +) with a density of pixels for a Great Picture (while sitting close as in flying flight sims). Not sure why anyone would buy a 4K monitor under 30 inches diagonal. Can you imagine how big your Text would be (Windows doesn't scale well yet), you'd need a magnifying glass to read your menus. And until Flight Sims take advantage of horsepower provided by Crossfire and SLI, running 4K would sacrifice frame rate or eye-candy. Maybe when Nvidia cranks out a 20nm fab Maxwell GTX 980 Ti with 6/8GB VRAM, then a Single GPU might have enough muscle for 4K ! EDIT (Added for Ratfink's Below Post): BenQ BL3200PT Review: A 32-Inch AMVA Monitor At 2560x1440 http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/benq-bl3200pt-qhd-monitor,3898.html
