DCSW Latest stable version is 2.5.5.33184 Instant Action - Caucasus FA-18C Case I Carrier Landing (Fuel ~ 5,000lb) After the last stable release version (2.5.5.33184), my On-Speed AoA Indexer Indication is 20 Knots faster Indicated Airspeed. Previously: 135-140 KIAS would be On-Speed Now: 160+ KIAS is On-Speed (150 KIAS is Slow) Something is Rotten in the State of Denmark - and something is Rotten with this Instant Action Mission. Maybe Just me - Why? - No Clue. Anyone else having to go faster ?

Pesky German AI Piloted FW-190s Tough Opponents ========================================== Spitfire Instant Action - Caucasus - Dogfight 2 Spitfires vs 2 x FW-190 D-9 AI Maybe just me - but I find that the German FW-190 AI piloted Birds are much Peskier Opponents than in the P-51D Module. In Spitfire, I can Saddle Up in Rear Aspect just Fine - but the AI German Pilot are much more Aggressive (or Skilled) in their Defensive Maneuvering and I find it much more dificult to get a Good (In Plane) Tracking Gunshot than fighting the FW-190 in the P-51 Module. Just me ?

Hard Spit Hardest Plane to Land in DCS World - Lots said it was the Spitfire Wow - They weren't Kidding ! First of all: Flying Final Approach from inside the Cockpit (for me) was originally Impossible because I couldn't see the Gauges (Airspeed & VVI) at all. Maybe the real Gauges were optimized for Night Flying and Pilots relied on them less during the Day (VFR). But not being able to see them at all (without zooming in within Inches) in normal daylight illumination is Bogus - I don't believe for an instance that Spitfire Pilots couldn't see their Instrument Panel Gauges. These Threads document and provide a Fix for the Problem. Spitfire gauges illumination https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=224765 Spitfire High-Contrast Cockpit Gauges https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3302602/ Second: Even with raising my Viewing Point to help see over the Nose, staying Faster than called for Final Approach Speed (to Lower AoA), and flying a Steep 5 Degree Glide-Slope, it's still difficult to Keep the Runway Airpoint in Sight. Guess I need to stick my Neck out to the Side and fly a Curve-linear Approach all the way to touchdown. DCS: Spitfire LF Mk. IX - Taxi, Takeoff, and Landing - Producer Note Tutorial Comment - Even with Continuously Turning Base to the Threshold - he still Loses Sight on very Short Final and has nothing Visually to rely on except Peripheral Vision for Height above Touchdown. He was shooting for a smooth almost Three-Point Touchdown and does make a very Nice Landing. Third: The Narrow Wheel Base make it easy to Teeter-Totter making perfect Wings Level touchdowns essential. All adds up to one Finicky Bird to Land. Maybe 1,000 Landings from now I'll be Better. :pilotfly:

F-14B Tomcat (EA Stable Release) - Some Initial Observations

Horizon Line TRIM COPY - THANX ! Puzzled Though ? If the HUD System can place the Flight Path Marker (Velocity Vector) Correctly - then it Knows where the Horizon is - Why doesn't (wouldn't) it just keep the Horizon Line on the Real Horizon without having to TRIM ? -
F-14B Tomcat (EA Stable Release) - Some Initial Observations
Igor4U posted a topic in DCS: F-14A & B
What a Great Bird following in the superlative Lineage of USN Fighter Aviation 'Cats'. Just a Few of my Initial Observations: - Manual/Emer Wing-Sweep (Mode): Wish they would have given the Option of setting it (assigning it) as an Axis. With the TM HOTAS Warthog, the Throttle Box has a Slider (JOY_SLIDER1) almost exactly physically where the Manual Wing-Sweep Handle is Located for Real. - HUD Horizon Line: My HUD's Horizon Line (Landing Mode) is Off by 5 Degrees (Low - Below the actual Level Horizon). Is this a Switchology Snafu (Me) or a Bug Anomaly ? - Roll Rate: Varies pretty widely base on Speed and Wind Sweep (Not Unlike many Aircraft). Guess I was expecting a Flight Control Computer to sort of Gain the Stick Input to produce a little more Consistent Roll Rate across the Flight Envelope. So Far Lovin my 'TC' - But Gotta Go - Catch a Three Wire. :pirate: -
The Yak-52 seems to me to have a slightly Aft Center of Gravity: - On Takeoff (Rotation) the Nose wants to very easily and rapidly Pitch Up. - On Landing, if the Aircraft is Trimmed Up (Hands-Off) on Approach, the slightest wee bit of (too much) Aft Stick (Round-Out and Flare) will cause a Balloon or Float. I actually keep the aircraft trimmed slightly nose down (on approach) which makes it more controllable (easier to land) in the round-out and flare. Maybe I need to add some serious Beer Belly (another 25 Kilograms) to the Pilots weight. I do find the Stick forces way too light in Aft Stick (Pitch Up) Movement. I keep all other aircraft Pitch Curves at +10 (Right of Center), but just increased it to +25 (Right of Center) for the Yak-52. We'll see how that changes the handling characteristics with the very light Pitch Up stick forces. What a FUN Trainer ! But about the Aft CG, Anyone else with this impression - or just me ? :smoke: (Smoke em if ya got em) Added Edit: The adjustment to the Pitch Curve (to +25) worked well for my HOTAS Warthog - made the rapid Pitch up tendency on TO much more controllable

Said Before - But My 2 Cents AI FW-190 Dora outperforms P-51D Mustang - How Real is That ? Thought I summarize my experience with the 'AI' Dora: Scenario: Instant Action - P-51D - Caucasus Map - Dogfight FW-190 I really enjoy the above setup. But I've noticed that the AI FW-190 seems to aerodynamically outperform the Mustang (On Power-Based Performance: Climb, Acceleration, Top-End Speed). Here are a few of my observations: - Many times I'll be trapped in a Lag Pursuit Tail Chase where I'm unable to close and bring my Nose to Bear. I'm always able to keep the Dora in my forward Quadrant - The FW-190 never threatens my 6 o'Clock - it's just that I can't quite get a tracking Guns Shot. - In the above Tail Chase, the FW-190 is working the Vertical (must have a power advantage) where he seems to out-climb the Mustang, then the P-51D closes somewhat in the Dive. - Sometimes if the Tail Chase results in a Prolonged Stalemate - the Dora Bugs Out by just Pointing away - He out-accelerates, out-climbs, and out-speeds the Mustang - walking away to come back and fight another day. I thought the 'Stang' (was supposed to have) had a slight Speed advantage - but that's not the Case in DCS World. Once the German turns tail for Home - there is no Catching him. I've looked at a lot of W.W.II Aviation Web sites comparing the the Performance Stats of both Aircraft. Their Numbers look pretty close, but depending on whose facts (tech specs) you are looking at - there is some conflicting data on which aircraft is faster. Example: Fw-190 Dora-9 vs P-51D Mustang https://ww2aircraft.net/forum/threads/fw-190-dora-9-vs-p-51d-mustang.3151/ Compare Aircraft Results - North American P-51 Mustang vs Focke-Wulf Fw 190 (Wurger) https://www.militaryfactory.com/aircraft/compare-aircraft-results.asp?form=form&aircraft1=77&aircraft2=95&Submit=COMPARE Which is the better WW2 fighter plane - the Fw 190 or the American P-51 Mustang, and did they fight against each other during the war? https://www.quora.com/Which-is-the-better-WW2-fighter-plane-the-Fw-190-or-the-American-P-51-Mustang-and-did-they-fight-against-each-other-during-the-war\ Focke-Wulf Fw 190 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Focke-Wulf_Fw_190 North American P-51 Mustang https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_P-51_Mustang PS: My FW-190 Kills usually involve pulling aggressive lead (reducing angle off), then unloading to reduce Aspect, and getting a quick Snap-Shot. Depending on the Number and Quality of Hits - the German might be walking home to Supper. If I don't get him - I'm back in a Tail Chase until I have the energy to try again. :pilotfly:

Instant Action - MiG-21BIS - Nevada Map - Dogfight (German F-4E Phantom II) When I fly this Instant Action Mission, we start with the F-4 (about 1,500 ft) in front and perpendicular to the MiG-21 Crossing Left to Right at equal energy states. As I (in MiG-21) ease into a Right Turn (and waiting for the Burner to Light) to point my nose at the F-4, the F-4 Zoom Climbs and then 180s back into my face. By the time the MiG-21 AB lights and I can pull a little tighter - the F-4 has completed his 180 and we are Nose to Nose. So by the time I basically turn 90 right - the F-4 has climbed 2,000 ft above me and reversed 180 degrees - out-turning me by 90 degrees in the same amount of time. These Pesky Germans are one tough adversary ! And yes - I understand God's 'G' (the Egg) and why the F-4 (with Power Advantage) fights in the Vertical against the MiG-21. But my question is (based on the F-4's phenomenal performance), is this realistic ? Am I doomed to keep getting my Behind kicked by some Bratwurst eatin Aces ?

Help needed - mission after action report screen disappeared
Igor4U replied to BillyBoyFloyd's topic in General Bugs
Me Too ! After Last Update, End Mission (Escape Key) - no Longer Option to Watch-Track or Fly-Again Prior to Last Update (2.5.3.23225 31-Oct-2018), the End Mission (Escape Key) used to display a Dialog/Option Box which offered such Options (among others) as Watch-Track or Fly-Again. That Dialog Box with those Options (Watch-Track or Fly-Again) no Longer Appears, and I go straight back to DCS World Start Screen. Was this a Change, or just (I see not just) me ? Do I Need to run 'Repair' maybe ? Any Help Appreciated - THANX ! PS: There was some change to basic program associated with End of Mission: "Fixed crash when using a trigger with event "On mission ends" and some action" -
Sorry for the (maybe) Dumb Question; .......... ............ But what does that Bracket (in HUD) do, what is it telling me ? In terms of: - Airspeed (AoA) - Pitch Trim - Power Setting - AoA Indexer I've read references to it in the Forum and Flight Manual, but still don't quite grasp what it's telling me. Does it know something I don't from just eye-balling it ? THANX !

Boeing wins U.S. Air Force T-X pilot training program contract http://www.aerospacemanufacturinganddesign.com/article/boeing-wins-usaf-t-x-pilot-training-contract-100118/ $9.2 billion award funds 351 jets (option for 475), 46 simulators, and associated ground equipment. Quick Observations - DCS 2.5.3.21708 Update A few quick things I noticed with today's (19-Sept-2018) Update that weren't listed in the Official Update Summary F/A-18C - Quick Start - Caucasus - Case I Recovery: - All Ships have greatly Reduced Wakes; tougher (not as quick) to pick up the Carrier in the turn unless you slew the view Yak-52 - Quick Start - Caucasus - Take-Off - Previously, the YAk-52 had a very Light Nose (like almost an Aft CG), this Update seems to have corrected that - much better behaved & realistic handling MiG-15 - Quick Start - Nevada - Intercept - Previously, the Indian Springs Creech AFB Intruder (AI F-86 Sabre) used to (be a Trick-Dicky) fly around with Gear and/or Flaps down to try to fool you (in MiG-15) into Over-Shooting and then get quickly Gunned from Behind. After latest update - the AI F-86 will actually BFM you with all he's got - Now it's a FUN (full of Grunt) Engagement between two fairly evenly matched Aircraft. Curious - How Come ? 'EagleFox' said: "Biggest bullshit show ever made." 'Baco' siad: "What he said +1 " ===================================================================== I never knew that Military Aviation Enthusiasts considered the TV Series 'Dogfights' a Piece of Crapola. 'Dogfights' is presented sort of documentary style with interviews of the actual combatants wherever possible. I would think this would lend credibility to the Simulated/Animated Re-Creations; although I do think the Animations tend to be over-simplified and cartoonish. Just Curious about why you Fellers thinks 'Dogfights' is so Bogus ? PS: Back to the original Topic; I found this: LAST-DITCH MANEUVERS http://navyflightmanuals.tpub.com/P-1222/Last-Ditch-Maneuvers-44.htm

THANX 4 the Info Thank You 'Nealius' Appreciate the Information. Need a Better looking Yak-51 than Bare Metal if you want any 'Street Cred' out on the Nellis Ranges :megalol:

Pitch & Roll Curves for Yak-52 I originally started flying (w HOTAS Warthog) the Yak Bird with my DCS Defaults of 10% Curves for Pitch & Roll. The Yak-52 proved way too sensitive at 10% Curves which resulted in fast twitchy control inputs - very unrealistic. I've increased them (to 20-25% for Yak-52 Specific) which has resulted in much smoother and realistic aircraft response to flight control inputs. Don't worry about any optimum setting Graphs - a Little Trial & Error will let you actually feel your adjustments as you fine tune them - you'll be one Happy Ruski (no offense) in less than 5 Minutes. I'm having a Ball with the Yak-52 - Great Fun Plane. Wish I had one for Real ! :pilotfly:

Despite your best Max Performance Turn, the Bandit is able to pull Lead and bring his Guns to Bear. You have only a Split Second to Live or Die. Will you be coming home for Supper, or standing in Line at the Pearly Gates? Only a supreme last ditch maneuver will do - hope you have one up your sleeve ready to go. I've been re-watching the History Channel's Military Aviation Documentary Series "Dogfights'. I've come across two Aerial Engagements where the targeted Aircraft uses a rather unconventional (IMHO) Last Ditch Maneuver to evade impending Death or Destruction. Here are the Two engagements: Dogfights P-51 Mustang (Last Ditch Maneuver - Watch at 10:00) Date: 2-Nov-1944 Pilot: Lt Col (then Capt) Donald Bryan Engagement: P-51D vs Me-109 Scenario: P-51 in a Hard Left Turn with Me-109 approaching Guns Solution Last Ditch Maneuver: Snap Full Aft Stick - Full Bottom Rudder - Full Forward Stick - then Neutralize Stick The Last Gunfighter (Last Ditch Maneuver - Watch at 32:00) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYXNEiMYExY Date: 14-Dec-1967 Pilot: Richard Schaffert Engagement: F-8 Crusader vs MiG-17 Scenario: F-8 in a Hard Left Turn (get Bounced) with MiG-17s on his tail firing Guns/Cannon Last Ditch Maneuver: Agressive Pitch Down Forward Stick - Full Bottom Rudder MiG Killers of the USS Midway (Last Ditch Maneuver - Watch at 30:00) Date: 23-May-1972 Vietnam Pilot: Caot (then LtCmdr) Ron 'Mugs' McKeown Engagement: USN F-4 Phanton vs MiG-17 Scenario: F-4 tracking MiG-17 for a Heater Shot when it gets bounced from behind by MiG-17 left 8 o'Clock in Guns Range Last Ditch Maneuver: Back Flip (Snappy Departure from Controlled Flight): Full Forward Stick & Buttom Rudder, follwed by Full Aft Stick & Top Rudder, Unload and F-4 Recovers, MiG-17 forced out in Front All of these Aircraft had conventional Flight Controls (with Pilot in Charge) - I'm wondering if modern Aircraft with Flight Control Computers and Fly-by-Wire Systems would respond accordingly by letting the Pilot fly (nearly) Out-of-Control, or at least past the normal Aircraft Control Limits ? What are your tried and true (or trial and error) Last Ditch Maneuvers ? Or aint ya Tellin.

I always try to finish each mission (unless I was Toast) with an RTB and Full-Stop Landing. I don't have every Aircraft Module, but the Fixed Wing Birds I do have; each has it's own unique Landing Personality. Most of my Tricycle Gear Aircraft have pretty benign Approach and Landing Characteristics. No nasty surprises as long as you manage your Airspeed, Aimpoint, Glide Path, and Power Reduction. But I have three Modules that I consider the hardest to consistently land nicely. They are: - MiG-21bis: The High Power Setting Required coupled with having to fly a Low Alpha Fast (350 Km/h) and Steep (4 Degrees+) Approach to keep the Runway Threshold in Sight makes the timing of the Roundout and Power Reduction Critical. As you stabilize over the Runway into the Flare - you actually lose sight of the Runway ahead of you and are left with not much except Peripheral Vision to sense Sink Rate and Height about Touchdown. But don't chop that Throttle to Idle or you'll drop like a Rock unless you're just a few inches above touchdown. Mig-21 SPS system, or the magic of blown flaps https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=132490 - F-5E: The relatively high AoA Approach keeps the Nose High and also requires a fairly steep 3+ Degree descending Glidepath to maintain sight of the Landing Environment. The Roundout seems to need keeping power on - because reducing power here (too much, too fast), you'll get that 'Sinking' feeling. Once established in the Flare you can smoothly come to idle. But you know what - if you're a little fast - that Low Wing Bird can do a little floating down in Ground Effect. I've actually seen this in real life Video - Pilots having to pulse the stick slightly forward (almost imperceptible - but if you watch closely - visible) to lower AoA and kill Lift (Watch the Swiss F-5 Landings carefully - you'll catch it). And I've had to do this as well - just a tad mind you. 2 Northrop F-5E Tiger II Patrouille Suisse Start Landing and Taxiway at Meiringen Air Base - P-51D: This Feller is the Hardest of them all to (consistently) land smoothly. With the Beast named 'Merlin', Small power changes induce quite a few Torque Gyrations - so getting configured (Gear & Flaps) on speed with a stablized power setting is critical. I find that flying (Approach) slightly faster (than recommended 115-120 mph) at 125 to 130 mph is helpful. But the Tail-Wheel configuration with mid-fuselage cockpit results in losing sight of the Runway ahead of the Aircraft after Roundout while in the Flare. Again - you're left with nothing but Peripheral Vision to judge Sink Rate and Height above Touchdown. And - almost every P-51 I've had in many Sims - all are Bouncy on Touchdown unless you come very close to touching down with ZERO Vertical Velocity. This is my Toughest Aircraft to Land. How about you Ladies and Gents (using the term loosely), what Aircraft is the Toughest to Land ?

More on Yak-52 Skins Here you go: Yak-52 Skins (User Files - Download) https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/?set_filter=Y&arrFilter_pf%5Bfiletype%5D=&arrFilter_pf%5Bgameversion%5D=518&arrFilter_pf%5Bfilelang%5D=&arrFilter_pf%5Baircraft%5D=537&arrFilter_DATE_CREATE_1_DAYS_TO_BACK=&CREATED_BY=&sort_by_order=TIMESTAMP_X_DESC&set_filter=Filter My Problem with Yak-52 Skins: I went to modify Yak-52 Skins for the 'Instant Action' Missions Nevada Map. There were NO alternative Skins that were Selectable for the Nevada Missions. I was able to change Paint Skins for the YAk-52 in the Caucasus's Instant Action Mission. How can I add the already available 2.5+ Version YAk-52 Skins (in Caucasus) to the Nevada Instant Action Missions ? THANX ! :pilotfly:

I have Updated to 2.5+, but accepted the Option to keep a copy of Final 1.5. DCS World 1.5 Final Stable version: 1.5.8.12823.414 (my update log shows) Is this Correct ? When offered the Option to Retain (Save) my Final Version of DCS World 1.5 (1.5.8.12823.414) along with upgrading (Migrating) to DCS World 2.5, I thought it would be an excellent idea. Especially since DCS World 2.5+ changed it's DRM scheme from (Local Drive stored) Key-Based to Internet Connection required Authorization Login. By keeping a copy of the Older DCS World 1.5, I was planning to have an Off-Line Option to fly all my Pre 2.5 Modules. Final Stable 1.5 would allow me to skip Logging in, and open up and allow me to fly all my Modules with the caveat - "Multi-Player will not be Available". So I went to open up 1.5 the other day, and the first thing it did was update it's Updater (even though I thought there are no further updates for Final 1.5) - Correct ? Then it asked if I wanted to update to 2.5+ ==== I said "NO" and closed the Update Box. After doing that - I tried to Open DCS World (1.5) without Logging in (like I used to before upgrading to 2.5). CAN't be Done Now. DCS World Crashes if you try to open without Logging In. Logging in allowed me to Open DCS World 1.5. But what's the Sense of (now) Retaining the Final 1.5 Version (1.5.8.12823.414) if you lose the No Log-On Functionality / Flyability. Is this just me ? Is their a Way to get 1.5 back to opening up in Non-Multi-Player Avialable Mode. Or are the Good Old Days gone Forever ? So No Internet - No Fly ?

Different Attitudes for different Dudes After flying several CCCP/Russian designed aircraft (MiG-15, MiG-21, and YAk-52), I thought I'd try getting an answer on something I was puzzled by. The former Soviet Union (CCCP) and today's Russia have had (and still have) many distinguished Aeronautical Engineers and Aviation Pioneers. But for the Life of Me (being Western Trained), I cannot understand the Logic behind Russian style Attitude Indicators (AI): - If Blue is Sky and Brown is Dirt, looking at the Russian Attitude Indicator appears Upside Down - Because Russian AI Sky & Dirt are Reversed - When Pitching Nose Up, the Russian AI displays (in the Sky, but) Nose Down - And also confusing (to a lesser extent) are just the differences in the Orientation & Movement of the Horizon Bar I guess that if you train from the beginning to understand what the Rusian AI is telling you, this would be second nature, For me, I really have to re-cage my Brain; and/or stay VFR/VMC. Could someone please explain (Collude) on how & why this design was conceptualized. "Spasibo" ! :pilotfly:
