    radar usage

I seem to remember from earlier versions that the radar worked a lot better. The last week, it has been working very poorly for me. So I was wondering whether I'm doing something wrong? To test this I made a simple mission with a few air targets flying away from me at different altitudes. Here are a few screenshots to illustrate how poorly the radar is working: 2 targets, almost straight ahead, slightly higher than meradar pointing straight ahead at HRF, no contacts (even after letting it fully scan a few times). a bit later one of the AI's misbehaved by turning towards me: even at 8.6NM I don't see him on the radar Then I turned on the special mode and it instantly locks. I also attached the track. Curious to hear whether I am missing something, or whether this is a bug. Thanks beforehand for thinking along! edit: perhaps related to the other thread about contacts blinking? I have also seen that, but in this case I don't see any contacts at all.... AA_radar_test.trk
  2. When I try to connect I get "server offline". I'm only seeing five servers in the server list
  3. So.... I already replaced my X56 stick, because the washer plate was sticking, and today I noticed a problem with the throttle. When the right throttle (the one with the most buttons) is moved forward past the center point, it doesn't stay put. instead it moves by it's own weight towards maximum forward position. The left throttle is fine when moved separately, presumably because it's lighter. When they are stuck together, they also move forward. Very annoying when trying to keep speed. It even happens when the friction is at maximum. Did anyone else encounter this issue and manage to fix it?
  4. Nice vid! At 2:36 I hear an engine spooling down before touchdown. I was under the impression that this would cause you to touchdown very roughly; or at least that's what tends to happen in DCS.
  5. Maybe he just wants to see people use more varying loadouts? Why would you ever drop an unguided bomb, if you can always use GPS guided bombs? If there are incentives to use anything but the most effective weapons, it creates new challenges and difficult choices.
  6. My favorite is the mig21, because it doesn't have all the fancy stuff, but it does have the cool navigation systems, and the module has good tutorials. Also, nukes.
  7. Mig21 and Mi-8 for me, Mig21 because in the final flare before touchdown you can't see the runway anymore, and because it's kind of difficult to manage speed without lowering the throttle enough. I manage to "land" almost every time, but I do break a wheel now and then. For maximum fun, try landing it with some crosswind. But anyway, now I am able to land the mig, the AV8, A10C and M2000 are a walk in the park. The Mi-8 because it's hard to keep it pointing in the right direction, while not drifting, overshooting or ending up in a vortex ring-state. I've been switching some hardware (got rudder pedals instead of a twist-stick) recently, and it feels like flying a whole other helicopter. The plus side is that it allows you to really quickly get used to new hardware, as you are constantly moving all the available axes.
  8. Thanks everyone for the very interesting info! the VKB gladiator seems interesting compared to the warthog especially considering its price. Edit: looking a bit further, the idea with virpil is that you buy a base and a grip separately? Then you end up somewhere around 300 euros for a stick, and the VKB has the gladiator for 100 euros or a "gunfighter" for 310 or 410 euros. Any reason to pick one over the other?
  9. Hi all, I have a question about the way different brands of flightsticks work. Currently I have an X56 stick, and I am a bit dissapointed by the general way it has been built. What it comes down to is that it has a pressure plate that is pushed down into a "dish". If you move the stick in the X or Y direction, the plate has to move up, which compresses the spring, thus pushing back against your hand movement. My problem with this system is that once the spring is compressed by for example a Y movement, it is possible to roll the plate along the dish with very little resistance as the spring stays equally compressed. In other words, moving in the X axis when Y is neutral takes more effort than moving in the X axis when simultaneously moving Y closer to neutral. The system works well if you want to make a lot of single axis movements, but especially when flying helos I find myself struggling with twitchy and overshooting movements. So I was wondering whether this is also the case with other sticks, or whether they use a different hardware mechanism; or perhaps this effect is exaggerated when the plate is a bit too tight, which is another problem which I try to alleviate with some grease now and then....
  10. Thanks for your reply, I am doing full alignment, but it seems the game doesn't notice me passing a waypoint. How sensitive is the altitude requirement for the waypoints to be noticed? If the flightplan says 15000 feet, and I pass at 16000, is that a problem?
  11. In mission 7 I'm experiencing very weird bugs, possibly due to events not triggering (?) Sometimes Berger01 doesn't do anything at all when I reach WP2, then flying to WP 3 and 4 and then back 3-2 nothing happens. One time, I did have the event trigger, where I had to bomb an APC and call in the helicopter, and everything seemed to go right, but then when I was landing, my wingman crashed and after parking in the designated spot, the mission didn't complete. Just for clarity: I keep my red radio in chanel 1 and green in chanel 3 after takeoff. Not sure if it is a bug, or whether I'm not flying to the correct places or something...?
  12. I have been following Chuck's guide to the letter, as far as I can tell, but it says nothing about setting zero trim by cycling the autopilot. I'll give it a try!
  13. Hi all, everytime the M2000 is on the ground, the decol warning is on. I have no idea what is causing this; I tried the slats in/out/auto, but that doesn't make a difference. Also, I have this issue before ever touching the trim settings after a cold start. Is there any button to reset trim or trim for takeoff or something? Or is it a bug? Thx!
  14. I get your sentiment, I play a lot of airplane sims, and I could nail pretty much every landing in most sims, especially FSX. The most difficult landings I experienced were in IL2: battle of stalingrad. But then I started with the mig21, and I had to re-learn how to land. It really takes some getting used to, you have to nose-up pretty badly; almost completely obscuring sight of the runway, and then very softly touch down. And keep quite a lot of throttle on; if you cut the throttle, you will become a brick.
  15. Wait, what? so the APU switch, next to the fire extinguished switch, which shows APU as a tooltip, isn't an APU? I noticed the engine doesn't instantly fail when you turn this switch off, is that modeled incorrectly?
  16. thanks again for all your advice, it's going a lot better now, indeed flaring more makes a big difference. Only problem now is trying to touch down on the first quarter of the runway :music_whistling:
  17. could it be a bomber? like a Vulcan or a Tu-95? Woul be the first real bomber for DCS....
  18. Thank you for the advice! How many degrees should I (approximately) point the nose up? Normally I use a lot more flare, but I noticed the mig21 has this fin like structure under the rear, and I'm always a bit scared of scraping it against the runway.
  19. So here's a track, I tried starting with low amount of fuel, still I eithe ruin my gear or bounce most of the time when trying to land. landing attempts.trk
  20. I'm having the same issue, have been trying a lot for the last week. Thanks for the advice in this thread, will try again, and maybe post a track if it fails agian. edit: so one added question: do you always dump all your payload before landing? seems a bit wasteful, but it does also save some landing weight...
  21. ah, this is a good solution, I guess not many people will change hardware several times per month....
  22. Cool, will do, it's not a problem now, but it may become one in the long run ;)
  23. Today I added some extra RAM sticks to my PC. When I started a mig21 mission, I got the anouncement that my CD key was no longer valid due to "significant changes in hardware". So I had to re-activate, but it seem like this cost me one of my limited number of installations. Will I lose one activation every time I change something to my hardware? Because I plan to change more hardware in the future to keep my PC up to date...
  24. I hope it's an AWACS; wouldn't that be something?
  25. I found you can use the "watch track" option to "refly" the mission, just watch the track, press esc and take control.
