Cannot connect to multiplayer games anymore
gundelgauk replied to gundelgauk's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Thanks, I just tried it with a few IPs but same result, after 20 seconds or so it jumps back to "Start", ie not connected mode. I think I must be going crazy. If I have some spare time later I will try installing FC on my laptop, start a game on it and see if I can connect. -

That's why I tried adding port forwarding, unfortunately it didn't help. I just wanted to try that but I can't figure out how to find out the IP addresses of the servers via HL so that I can enter them manually. But I will keep trying and see if that works, thanks! -

Ah yes, I tried that as well, I forgot to put it into my OP. No luck unfortunately. But thanks! -
Ok why not, heh. Not much to see here anyways, I'm boring like that. :D On my desktop computer it looks similar, only there's also the LOMAC, HL and TrackIR shortcuts.

Hi, I'm having trouble and I'm at a total loss here. I'd be glad for any advice or ideas you might have. Until today I was perfectly able to join multiplayer games and play on HL. No problems whatsoever. Then today it just stopped working. I changed nothing at all no router settings, no game settings, nothing. I just cannot connect to any game anymore, it hangs when trying to connect to the server and after maybe 15-20 seconds the game breaks up the connection attempt. This is what I already tried: - Forward TCP and UDP ports 10308 to my computer (I'm behind a masquerading linux router, I did not have to do port forwarding before to join games). - Complete reinstallation of 1.12a (1.0 -> 1.1 -> 1.12a). - Tried it under another operating system with a (again) fresh installation. - Connecting to 1.02 games on UBI with a fresh 1.02 installation. Same problem there. None of these helped. Again, I did not change any router/firewall or game settings before it stopped working. Still, I took a close look at my firewall logs and they don't show any blocked traffic between me and the servers. At this point I'm at a loss. Maybe it's something completely obvious that I'm missing... I'm just out of ideas at the moment. Any ideas please? :helpsmilie:

There are some issues. Some programs/games will not run correctly or not at all and your system will probably not run as smooth as with XP, especially if your computer is a bit dated. Some people do report better FPS in games however. If you can (legally) get it without having to pay for it, try it on a seperate partition (DO NOT UPDATE, do a seperate installation!) and make up your own opinion. You don't have much to lose except for a few hours of your time at most. If not, do what the others posted and wait. It's probably not yet worth spending so much money on at the moment and chances are that you will buy a new computer within a year in which case you'll likely get vista anyways.

These virtualization environments are mainly interesting for companies who want to run multiple virtual servers on a single host platform. Modern processors implement mechanisms that facilitate this process without having to use vmware and such. This also greatly enhances performance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtualization Other than for testing stuff or for the coolness factor I don't really see any benefit in this for us end users. Well except maybe it can eliminate the need for dual boot if you don't want to use Vista but sometimes need it for games that don't run on linux or something like that. ;)

Windows Vista: The longest suicide letter...
gundelgauk replied to Cdr.Instigator's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I've been testing Vista since pre beta and apart from the big performance drop on my dated PC I didn't find it so bad. The performance thing improved somewhat with the final release but not by much. Yesterday was the first time that I actually tried playing games on it. At the moment I only play two games, that's LockOn and Hero Online. And both of them I can't get to work for the life of me. (Before you try to help: Yes, I tried patches, compatibility mode etc etc, forget it, I've given up) Sure, there are some nice changes that improve productivity somewhat but if that means that I have to freaking dual boot to be able to play my games... forget it. I'm just so glad that I didn't have to pay money for that thing. -
For me it's mostly MiG-29 or Flanker. I only fly the F-15 once in a while or if I have to go blue and there are no other jets on that team. I don't know what it is about the F-15, I don't like it very much. It's a good fighter and in my opinion it's a bit easier to fight and win with but somehow I plain don't like to fly it as much as the russian jets. Now if there was a Typhoon, I'd probably not get any time to fly any other jets. :D

Now that's what I call control
gundelgauk replied to Kindred's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Ok, I haven't even seen the whole video yet... but - what the hell is that guy doing at about 1:00 to 1:10!? That's just incredibly insane. I'd never thought that something like this would be possible. -
The subsim Sub Command came with a voice input module that used the Microsoft voice recognition engine. It was possible to control almost everything on your sub by talking to your "crew". It worked rather well for me too. Problem is, when it got hectic (evading torpedo etc), I seemingly tended to speak differently because the recognition rate went downhill especially with numbers for headings, depth etc. And as flight sims tend to be much faster than sub sims, I guess we'd get too many false recognitions to make it worthwhile. One could limit voice commands to non critical systems however, like they did in the Eurofighter. Does anyone know what systems and functions can be controlled via voice in that jet?

noob questions - campaigns etc
gundelgauk replied to szymon81's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Sorry I can't help you with the campaigns either because I got frustrated with them for the same reason that you posted. As for online play, don't have second thoughts and just try it out! Make sure to upgrade to 1.02 and start logging in into the Ubi.com software (on Hyperlobby there are mostly 1.12a games). These days there seem to be lots of new players on Ubi, maybe partly due to LockOn having been sold in a German computer game magazine recently. This means that a) you'll have plenty of people to play with and b) many of them will also be relatively new to the sim and you'll actually be able to get some kills. ;) Compared to 1.12a the old version of LockOn seems to crash pretty often during online play (at least for me) though, so don't get the wrong impression and throw it away. If you find yourself having fun, invest the ~20 Euros and get Flaming Cliffs. It's more than worth it. EDIT: One more thing, some people on Ubi tend to be b***holes. The atmosphere in the 1.12a games on Hyperlobby is generally much more pleasant, people are actually friendly with each other instead of the "i pwn u n00b" counterstrike-like mentality on Ubi. So consider that as well before getting frustrated with this sim! EDIT2: I just read this in your other thread: My computer is pretty weak, I have to run LockOn on the absolute lowest settings to make it playable but I don't notice any difference in performance between the old LockOn and the new one with the Flaming Cliffs expansion. No worries! :D -
Think you have what it takes...
gundelgauk replied to OldFrankHog's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
I think this game is unrealistic in how the missiles follow the flares! (caution, sarcasm) -
As far as I know one can only give reputation points to someone else if one has positive reputation (ie greater than 0). If someone with 0 or negative rep tries to give you rep, it will show as a blank or transparent box. Could be all wrong though, I don't use forums that much any more and I'm not up to date with the whole reputation system.

Dude, no offence meant, but have you been on UBI lately? :) There are times (and this is no minor exception) when there are more people playing on UBI than on Hyperlobby. I'm not reverting back to 1.02 without any reason. I've had fun times in player made extremely low flight (Tiefstflug, sorry, I can't translate it any better) missions, dogfight missions and the like, which I unfortunately just do not see on Hyperlobby. It depends on the time of day of course. But I have seen 20+ people on UBI when Hyperlobby was next to empty. I do fly in Hyperlobby since I got myself Flaming Cliffs and I will continue to do so, but sometimes it's just plain boring because you have only dedicated servers that require you to play for at least an hour, but not at all enough other players to make it a fun experience. My idea was to try and get the people who still play on UBI (or just got started with Lock On) to play on Hyperlobby so that we have at least a unified place on which to build on. But there are huge problems like people thinking that Hyperlobby only supports 1.12a (with the obligatory StarForce reluctance) and so on. ;( EDIT: Sorry, you posted while I was trying to eliminate the worst mistakes out of my post. :D I'm sorry for not having made myself clear enough. I did play a lot on Hyperlobby (I love the RAF and TF servers in particular) but sometimes Hyperlobby seems to be rather unpopulated. That's the reason why I installed 1.02 again. And I saw - to my own surprise - that there were quite a few pilots there. Some completely new to the sim, some others building missions that are actually quite fun! However I hated to see the community divided like that. First thing I kept asking them was "Why don't you people use Hyperlobby?".

Sometimes it's downright scary how people start posting stuff that you need right at that very moment. I ordered my Track IR4 yesterday and I expect it to arrive (hopefully) in 1-3 days and I think I'll be needing this. Thanks very much!

I'm currently experiencing that all over again because I play a lot on the UBI.com service. Add to that things like "how do I start the engines", "stfu noob, ECM hides you from radar" and such. There seem to be a lot of people just getting started on Lock On at the moment. I don't say that's a bad thing, the opposite is the case. I try to tell them politely that reading the manual and doing training missions will greatly enhance their fun AND help not ruin other people's multiplayer experience (by not teamkilling and such). I also urge them to visit these here forums and, if possible, get Flaming Cliffs. There are lots of people who seem to be interested in Lock On in general but seem to be a bit - let's say misguided. Maybe that's partly due to Lock On having been recently released in a German computer game magazine. I encourage everyone who is bored sometimes and has some patience to join us on ye olde 1.02 and help educating new pilots. In the end we will all benefit. Hyperlobby seems to be close to death much too often. =( There I go, going all off topic again. I hope you people forgive me.

Try uploading your file to this site, it automatically scans it with a number of virus/malware scanners. Post the results please. :)

I second that. My new X52 came for christmas and initially I was on the lookout for good profiles but they all seemed a little weird and I would always end up changing things. So I finally decided that I could as well start from scratch. I fly mainly fighters so I imagined a typical multiplayer session, what functions I would need and how quickly I would need them (in the middle of a dogfight vs. BVR vs. takeoff/landing, etc). Then I mapped the functions as I thought would be most intuitive and ergonomic. As of yet my profile is an ongoing project. While I'm already extremely content with it, I still try out minor adjustments sometimes and if I like them, I keep them. A big advantage of this approach is that controlling your jet will come "naturally" to you. You won't have to relearn all the keys and switches that someone else dictated to you which is very overwhelming with the wealth of functions. It's really worth the effort. EDIT: Well I could make my profile available but as I mentioned, it's not really a complete piece of work. I also would have to make a jpeg documentation because you said you wanted that. It will take some time though because I'm currently at work.

Whoa guys, I think what he meant was not actually launching a missile but only writing 'I hope that's not a blue I just HoJed' on team only chat and see what happens, hoping the guys would get so scared that they turned off ECM where a simple 'please turn it off' wouldn't suffice. Correct me if I'm wrong though. ;)

I recently started playing 1.02 again and in some games I get the same crash very frequently. It mostly happens when I press some button, like drop chaff, switch to BVR mode or the map (some games do have them activated). But only in some games. I can play in others for hours without a single crash. I don't have data execution prevention activated and I even tried it on another Windows installation. Same results. What's strange is that it never ever happens to me in 1.12a. I'm suspecting that it might have something to do with mods/skins/missions or something else that the host is using. It's only a guess though.

The Slammers! They do nothing! -
Well call me daft but that just had to be done. http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p250/gundelgauk/lol.gif ~2 MB (Sorry, the file got too big to upload it directly to the forum. I hope this link works.)

Well what can I say, that's just extremely awesome. I love in-cockpit videos! Thanks a lot for posting that, I might have missed it otherwise. I didn't play Falcon 4 much but I still recognize some parts of the startup sequence. ;) It's a shame though that we can't see the HUD or hear the radio so far (I'm only 10 minutes into the video). But still it's a great vid and I'm planning on saving it.

Intentional "Warping" in Multiplayer
gundelgauk replied to ericinexile's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
bogusheadbox and Pilotasso, basically you two are exactly right in stating that bandwidth is the primary factor that determines ping. However there are other factors that (can) affect it to some degree. Curiously enough for example, ISDN connections which have much smaller bandwidth than your average ADSL connection will have generally better (shorter) ping times than the latter despite the smaller bandwidth. Unless the ADSL connection uses fastpath which switches off interleaving for error correction. This in turn can however lower the effective bandwidth because burst errors might occur. Modem users usually have "very bad" pings because of the extremely low bandwidth and the analog nature of the connection. There are network settings which you can tweak (particularly MTU) which may or may not improve your ping but in practice the result will most likely be measurable but not noticable in an online game. Furthermore there are factors that affect your connection regardless of bandwidth. For example which internet backbone your internet service provider is connected to will affect how long the routes between you and the server are (As an example, my ISP has strong connections to the US and most of Europe but not to Asia, so I wouldn't want to join a server that's located in Asia). Also the length of the route is to a degree subject to coincidence because of how internet connections work: you don't have a direct point-to-point connection to the server but individual packets may travel completely different routes to the point where packets that got sent off later arrive earlier at the server than their predecessors (this is the reason why the "length of the pipe" analogy does not wholly apply). Then there are factors such as general internet congestion. Unfortunately the factors in the last paragraph tend to cause the phenomenon we see as warping (lag/packet loss) in addition to increase ping times. But we have little to no control over these and that is the reason why I will refrain from accusing people of cheating until there is very, VERY solid evidence of it. Sorry for the off topic rambling... :poster_oops:
