Red Flag 4 Hitting the new NTTR Theater for DCS World!

Good attitude. Stay focused on self criticism instead of the goto "bullshit". From what I hear tacview isn't working too well atm which is unfortunate for learning. If you have time to read you can go to the advanced search page and search for BVR with titles only selected, might want to select english forum only too. There's a stack of threads about it, might not be the most flawless or organized source of information but it's a start.

After last patch, 27ER's performance is very weak again
TAW_Blaze replied to Chimango's topic in Su-27 for DCS World
The purpose of the jammers in the 15 and the russian pods is to combat STT or similar threats. They had limited usage even in that setup, noise jamming like we have in game would require a ludicrous amount of power and it'd overheat very fast. Then why am I being shot down by these useless missiles? Spade knows this about more but they flew lots of 15 v 15 1v1s where most of them ended in a gunfight too. 3. If you just throw an ER at the guy with that range the worst you'll get is a mutual kill with occasional nothing due to miss. ER is a lot faster in this scenario. 4. On the other hand you'll sure as hell know that the 15 driver wants to lob things in your face. You have your EOS that can get you in without any warning unless he finds you which is often not the case. I didn't say that forcing WVR makes you the god of air but it's your best shot at beating a 15. Flanker has far superior turning capability and given a reasonable merge you'll win a turnfight at least 9 out of 10 times. It's also much better equipped to approach a fight without giving away your presence. Most 15 drivers live in their instrument sub reality where if something disappears from the instruments they suddenly lose all their ability to do anything. You either ambush the guy or force a merge but you're never gonna kill a good 15 driver in a straight up fair BVR fight because that's not how it works. -

AFAIK the SPJs that we can carry are incapable of jamming TWS, for a start. But yeah like Rage said before the ECM system should be deleted already. -

Current ECM modeling doesn't even qualify as a joke. Couldn't agree any more. I won't reply to each of those but rather give an overall answer that you guys don't seem to get. I said that having poor BVR performance favors the russians, not that it makes them king of the hill. 15 is still going to reign supreme. But here's the thing: With the performance we presume to be realistic any russian jet would be in a hell of an uphill climb to beat a 15 in a energetically fair fight. From anywhere around 40 miles you could be in an engagement and your only tool would be the ER as the ET or the 73 ain't gonna do a thing for you. And even then despite the ER having slightly more legs will be far outweighted by having an ARH. Comparatively right now anywhere outside 15 miles you don't even think of firing at people. The scale of BVR engagement zone is reduced to a fraction of what it's supposed to be, the zone where you're supposedly gonna get trashed by a 15 probably 9 out of 10 cases in a reasonable fight. So yeah I'd agree to you having it a hell of a lot easier than in a realistic scenario. Effective slammer range is about 7 nm at the altitudes everyone flies at, and then I was pretty generous. I'd say it's exponentially easier to force a merge and lose his lock between 10 and 5 miles than from 40 to 5, no? The lack of TWS radar memory is just the icing on the cake, anyone who goes through the notch for even a split second, especially between turning hot/cold will usually just flat out vanish and refuse to reappear again. Sad part is that I know exactly how to deal with this and it's still a legit tactic to run from a guy then turn sideways and commit into him at 5 miles because chances are high you're gonna get a mutual kill atleast. I get it that your missiles suck but any fool who doesn't respect a good ER launch doesn't deserve to fly at all. It's still there to force your will on them, might not be a one shot wonder but it's definitely not something to ignore. I haven't flown the flanker for a long time but I know from the 15 side of things that ignoring ER launches is a fast way to go home. I think somewhere along the way I gave up to find reason behind ED's actions. -

They could use a better documenting system, but we're already getting a hell of a lot more than what we had some years ago. :D -

Yep. I decided to stop until it's fixed because every time I come around to fly I leave with a varying level of frustration. Everyone seems to only remember the good stuff. What about the mindless maddog spam and the fancy ECM blinking? :) It's still a sim and most of us have little or no knowledge and just assume how things should work, but since there isn't jack you can do about it you might as well just adapt to it because you'll lose a lot of the fun expecting things to work in a way they obviously aren't. IMO having bad BVR missiles favors the russian jets by a whole lot, it's so much easier to merge and it's far easier to lose anything inside 5 miles than anywhere else. The usual 15 driver'll have his head stuck in his instruments anyway so there's almost no fear of being visually spotted. :D Have to add I expected missile smoke to become easier to spot with EDGE but it turned out quite the opposite. I have a lot more trouble seeing them. -

TAW_Blaze replied to Chimango's topic in Su-27 for DCS World
I know. But maybe give them the benefit of the doubt that things are not working as well as they used to because the systems have become a hell of a lot more complex? :) As far as why performance keeps going back and forth. Well I have no idea. But for the moment it doesn't matter a lot since the game is unplayable in MP anyway. Out of memory crashes all day with 8GB. If I fly more than 45 mins in one run it's usually either the server crashing or me. -

Because ignoring gravity and having ludicrous flight / guidance models is better. :music_whistling: -

My HOTAS stand is the most simplistic thing in the world ever. Includes 2 chairs. Stick on the one I'm sitting on, throttle to the left on the 2nd chair. :D

From experience I'll go ahead and guess this isn't modeled in DCS. Am I right?
-
Forgive my ignorance but is this MiG-21 problem only present on our server or it exists everywhere else? There wouldn't be much to do in case of the latter.
-
SPJ of that technology isn't even supposed to be able to jam any kind of search radar including TWS as far as I know. The whole ECM system should be deleted, it's a joke at best. It's also ludicrous that it just default jams everything indefinitely outside burnthrough.

Russian missiles - usage, bug, problems, advantages
TAW_Blaze replied to tovivan's topic in Su-27 for DCS World
I've tried snaking, barrel rolling, or just flat out straight flying all while chaffing and it's anything but reliable against ERs. It might work X out of Y times but that's not a tactic I'm ever gonna use. A good move needs to be reliant on my actions and the opponent's actions as much as possible, not on the current mood of RNGesus. I've got a million better moves than rolling a dice. IR missiles are awhole different story, you can fly in their face all you want and they'll never hit you as long as you are aware of them and know what to do. I don't consider this a terribly realistic behavior, but it does make some sense - showing your nose to an IR missile is one if not the lowest IR profile of a jet. IR are far more dangerous from behind your 3/9 line and not just because you probably won't see it. -

In case of a yes no problem this isn't true at all. It could be a 0.1% chance for all I cared it'd still would apply as random. Yet I still usually get shot down by ERs if I'm in a bad spot. But I know we'll never agree on this because we've had this discussion many times, so I'm just gonna go ahead and stop bothering each other. :) -

TAW_Blaze replied to tovivan's topic in Su-27 for DCS World
I don't know if this was changed since a few months but I figure it wasn't, it was related to how the seeker of the missile was able to keep you in it's field of view despite how stupid the angle was, you could have had a slammer falling vertically down and it'd still lock you until it slammed the ground. -

TAW_Blaze replied to tovivan's topic in Su-27 for DCS World
Because ranges are far shorter. You shouldn't forget the maddog spam and the part where missiles ignored physics. So being more realistic is arguable. :D The fact that people had more years to learn also probably contributes to taking more risks. -

TAW_Blaze replied to tovivan's topic in Su-27 for DCS World
It has nothing to do with tracking. It has everything to do with the fact that you can ask your buddy or however amount of players to just fly for you and you can test everything over and over. It doesn't matter how shitty the guidance is, if you bank on a random thing to defeat missiles you won't survive for long. Let me guess your defense against an opposing ER isn't flying straight or barrel rolling and chaffing, is it? -

That would require to alter the simulation to become bullshit. It's a special skillset on it's own to know how to abuse the weakness of your opponent's equipment. -

IRL you don't get to know what the other side is exactly capable of and you also don't get to learn what works and what doesn't by a thousand tries and failures. So this argument is just senseless. A good virtual pilot will always fly a hell of a lot closer to the knife's edge than any reasonable real one would. Simply because he knows what he's up against and what he can get away with down to the meters.
